‘Germany needs Ozil’ – Wenger hopes for Arsenal playmaker U-turn – football news

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hopes Mesut Ozil can be convinced to return to the Germany team after his retirement following the World Cup.

Ozil cited the “treatment he received from the DFB” in his statement following the tournament, in which Germany flopped.

Joachim Low’s team were unable to qualify from their group, and suffered humiliating defeats to Mexico and South Korea in Russia.

Their poor form has only continued after the Russian showpiece, losing to both the Netherlands – who did not qualify for the World Cup – and world champions France in the UEFA Nations League this month.

Wenger managed Ozil between 2013 and 2018 at Arsenal, and insists that the Germany national team miss the playmaker.

“I think Germany needs Ozil and I hope Low can convince him to come back,” Wenger told Sport Bild.

“Ozil is a super football player and was not the worst at the World Cup.

“I did not love it that he withdrew from the Germany team [because] the Germans respect what he achieved.

“A small bit of motivation disappears when you know that you don’t have to be ready for a World Cup, a European Championship.

Article continues below

“I love it when the players are as good as possible. He loses a bit if he does not play at an international level.”

Ozil has made six Premier League appearances for Arsenal so far this season, scoring twice.

Germany are next in action in November, facing Russia in a friendly and the Netherlands in the Nations League, with Low’s side in danger of being relegated from their group.

Messi won’t be a leader for as long as he goes to the toilet 20 times before a game – Maradona – football news

Lionel Messi is not a leader, according to Diego Maradona, with the Barcelona and Argentina talisman accused of “going to the bathroom 20 times before a game”.

At 31 years of age and having spent more than a decade as an elite performer in the global game, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is accustomed to shouldering pressure and expectation.

He has, however, struggled with the burden of captaincy at times , despite having taken the armband for club and country in recent years.

Maradona believes Messi is the wrong choice for Argentina as, while he is unquestionably their best player, he lacks the personal skills required to inspire those around him.

The 1986 World Cup winner, who saw the Albiceleste struggle at Russia 2018 over the summer, told La Ultima Palabra Mexico : “Messi’s a great player, but he’s not a leader.

“Before talking to the coach and players, he’ll play on the PlayStation. Then, on the field, he wants to be the leader. He’s the best in the world with Cristiano [Ronaldo].

“For me, it’s difficult to say it but it’s useless to make a leader out of a man who goes to the bathroom 20 times before a game.

“There’s no two ways about it. Let’s stop making a God out of Messi. Messi is just another player for Argentina.”

Lionel Messi Argentina 2016

Messi has not figured for his country since suffering a last-16 exit in his latest showing on a World Cup stage.

He has ruled himself out of contention, with interim coach Lionel Scaloni being forced to call upon attacking alternatives.

Argentina remain hopeful that an all-time great can be brought back into the fold , but Maradona believes less needs to be asked of him before a recall can be considered.

He added: “I wouldn’t call him up right now, but never say never. We have to take the pressure off him.

Article continues below

“We have to take the leadership away from Messi for him to be the Messi we want him to be.

“I’d make him play as I want. I’d call him up and play him how I know Messi plays.”

Messi has earned 128 caps for Argentina, with that tally leaving him 19 short of Javier Mascherano’s record haul.

FA to vote on Wembley sale plan – football news

The Football Association (FA) has confirmed its council members are set to vote on a proposal to sell Wembley Stadium.

Fulham and Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan has offered £600million to purchase England’s national stadium.

Funds would be invested in grassroots football under the terms of the deal, which would see England continue to play at Wembley.

And a vote will take place later this month on whether or not the sale of Wembley to Khan should be given the green light.

“Today’s FA Council meeting included a presentation and healthy discussion on the potential sale of Wembley Stadium,” said the statement.

Article continues below

“The full facts and figures of a £600m investment to improve community football facilities in England were outlined.

“The presentation also included detailed information on the commercial deal that has been discussed, including the protections that will be in place to ensure its status as the national stadium and the home of English football.

“A special meeting has been scheduled on October 24 for FA Council members to vote on the potential sale. The FA board will then take these views into consideration.”

Sampaoli ‘learned a lot’ from Argentina’s failed World Cup campaign – football news

Jorge Sampaoli has no regrets over Argentina’s failed World Cup campaign despite a last-16 loss to eventual winners France costing him his job.

Argentina stumbled through the group stage at Russia 2018 with Sampaoli heavily criticised for what were perceived to be confused tactics and an over-reliance on Lionel Messi.

Sampaoli, who won the Copa America during his time in charge of Chile, also appeared uncertain of his best team, having left out Inter captain Mauro Icardi despite a prolific season in Serie A.

And the 58-year-old is willing to treat Argentina’s World Cup failure as a learning experience as he considers his next step.

“I believe that all of us who were there, including myself, were honest in terms of our contribution,” Sampaoli said to Marca .

“I put my heart and my passion into it, but it wasn’t enough. I do not think I have to reproach myself with things. I learned a lot for the future.

“Criticism was as big as the expectation. I arrived with 95 per cent approval from the people, thinking that Jorge Sampaoli could give Argentina that desired World Cup with the best player on the field. When it did not come, the criticism came. But I have no grudge against anyone.”

Sampaoli was commenting publicly for the first time since being sacked by Argentina and the former Sevilla coach explained why he has taken so long to speak to the media.

“I took some time to analyse my time in the national team and the period after the World Cup,” he added. “I needed this moment of analysis to make clear things about my future.

“I just took time to go deeper into the experience I lived and for that reason I wanted to be isolated and break things up. I am a person who works as a football coach.

“I moved away from the media life. But I didn’t stop talking to the world of football, nor did I lose my social life, nor did I stop going to the movies, or go for a coffee at a bar. Nobody criticised me face to face, on the contrary.”

Goal difference or head to head? How every major football competition ranks teams level on points – football news

Goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head – how do leagues determine ranking when clubs are level on goal difference?

Manchester City won the title in remarkable style in 2012, clinching it right from under the noses of their greatest rivals Manchester United after the two were level on points, though Roberto Mancini’s side were crucially victorious through their superior goal difference.

The amount of yellow cards you pick up in a season could also potentially determine your finish in the league, as well as a slew of other quirky tie-breakers and rules.

So how do the likes of the Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A and other top competitions determine their table rankings? GBP Sports takes a look.

What is goal difference vs. head-to-head?

Goal difference is a tie-breaker used to rank teams who finish on equal points in a league tournament.

Goal difference is counted as the number of goals scored by a team in all league matches across the season, minus the number of goals conceded – for instance, if a team were to score four goals but concede two across two matches, their goal difference would be +2. A negative goal difference occurs when a team concedes more goals than they have scored, like if they conceded three but managed to score one goal (giving them a goal difference of -2).

The usage of goal difference as a tie-breaker was first introduced at the 1970 World Cup, and then used by the English Football League in 1975. Since then, the majority of European football leagues as well as tournaments around the world use goal difference to determine ranking – though other competitions may favour the “head-to-head” record or other variations as a priority tie-breaker.

Goal difference has replaced the “goal average” tie-breaker in order to encourage attacking play, as goal average means the number of goals scored divided by the number of goals conceded – which often enabled some teams to sit back and defend in order to edge out low-scoring games.

Another issue with goal average was that if a team were to concede no goals, the value cannot be determined, as division by zero is undefined.

Using head-to-head as a tie-breaker determines the form of the two level clubs when they have faced each other. If Chelsea and Liverpool were level on points but Chelsea managed to beat Liverpool home and away in the league, the London side would be deemed victorious.

How does the Premier League rank teams level on points?

Eden Hazard

In the English top-flight, if any clubs finish the season with the same number of points, their position is first determined by:

  1. Goal difference
  2. Higher number of goals scored
  3. Playoff at neutral venue if relevant for deciding champion, relegation or participating in a European league, otherwise by draw.

How does the Champions League rank teams level on points?

In the Champions League group stages, teams are organised into groups of four and then ranked according to points. The teams to finish in the top two of their group will progress to the knockout stages, while the latter two will either be eliminated or dropped into the Europa League.

  1. Head-to-head points between tied teams
  2. Head-to-head goal difference between tied teams
  3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams
  4. Away goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams
  5. If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams
  6. Goal difference in all group matches
  7. Goals scored in all group matches
  8. Away goals scored in all group matches
  9. Wins in all group matches
  10. Away wins in all group matches
  11. Disciplinary points (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points)
  12. UEFA club coefficient

How does La Liga rank teams level on points?

Lionel Messi Barcelona Valencia 071018

La Liga decides their tie-breakers between two level clubs first through goal difference, like in the Premier League.

But, if points are equal between two or more clubs, then the tie is broken through:

  1. Head-to-head points between tied teams
  2. Head-to-head goal difference between tied teams
  3. Goal difference

If the tie is still not broken, then the winner will be determined by Fair Play scales:

  1. Receiving a yellow card: -1 point
  2. Doubled yellow card/ejection -2 points
  3. Direct red card -3 points
  4. Suspension of coach or other club personnel -5 points
  5. Misconduct of supporters -5-7 points
  6. Stadium closure -10 points

Then, if the clubs are still level, the ranking will be resolved with a tie-break match in a neutral stadium.

How does the Bundesliga rank teams level on points?

In the Bundesliga, they also use goal difference as the priority tie-breaker. Their rules for determining the end-of-season ranking are as follows:

  1. Goal difference
  2. Goals scored for the entire season
  3. Head-to-head results (total points accumulated)
  4. Head-to-head goals scored
  5. Head-to-head away goals scored
  6. Total away goals scored for the entire season
  7. Playoff at neutral venue if relevant for deciding champion, relegation or participating in a European league, otherwise by draw.

How does Ligue 1 rank teams level on points?

Kylian Mbappe PSG Lyon Ligue 1 07102018

In Ligue 1, the following tie-breakers are observed:

  1. Goal difference
  2. Higher number of goals scored
  3. Playoff at neutral venue if relevant for deciding champion, relegation or participating in a European league, otherwise by draw.

How does Serie A rank teams level on points?

The deciding tie-breakers in Serie A are as follows:

  1. Head-to-head points
  2. Head-to-head goal difference
  3. Goal difference
  4. Higher number of goals scored
  5. Playoff at neutral venue if relevant for deciding champion, relegation or participating in a European league, otherwise by draw.

Until the 2004-05 season, a playoff fixture at the end of the season would be used to determine the champions, European spots or relegation, if the two teams were tied on points.

The last championship playoff occurred in the 1963-64 season when Bologna and Inter both finished on 54 points and Bologna won the playoff 2-0.

How does the Eredivisie rank teams level on points?

The deciding tie-breakers in Eredivisie are as follows:

  1. Goal difference
  2. Higher number of goals scored
  3. Head-to-head points
  4. Head-to-head goal difference
  5. Head-to-head away goals scored
  6. Playoff if relevant for deciding champion, relegation or participating in a European league, otherwise by draw.
  7. Penalty shoot-out (only after a playoff)

How does goal difference and head-to-head work in international competitions?

Japan Senegal World Cup 2018

In the group stage of the World Cup, which is the first round of the final tournament before the last-16 stage, the following tie-breakers are observed to determine the ranking of teams who are level on points:

  1. Points obtained in all group matches
  2. Goal difference in all group matches
  3. Number of goals scored in all group matches
  4. Points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question
  5. Goal difference in the matches played between the teams in question
  6. Number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question
  7. Fair play points in all group matches (only one deduction could be applied to a player in a single match)

The fair play point deductions are as follows:

  1. Yellow card: -1 point
  2. Indirect red card (second yellow card): -3 points
  3. Direct red card: -4 points
  4. Yellow card and direct red card: -5 points

The fair play point deductions were observed to determine the winners of Group H in the 2018 World Cup, where Senegal and Japan were level on points, form, goal difference, number of goals scored and number of goals conceded.

Japan eventually progressed to the next round based on fair play after it was ruled that they received two fewer yellow cards than Senegal, earning a deduction of -4 points compared to Senegal’s of -6 points.

What league titles have been decided by goal difference and head-to-head?

Vincent Kompany Roberto Mancini 2012

The most recent, and one of the most iconic and classic, cases of a league title won based on goal difference came during the race between city rivals Manchester City and Manchester United in the 2011-12 season.

Much of the league season was a two-horse race contested by the two Manchester clubs, with the two finishing 19 points ahead of third-placed Arsenal. City and United headed into their final game of the season level on points, but City were ranked first due to their goal difference superiority of eight goals. In order to win the league, they had to make sure that they bettered United’s result – who faced Sunderland away.

City clinched the title in remarkable, unscripted fashion, scoring two goals in injury time to stage a dramatic 3-2 comeback. United scored early on to win 1-0 and had thought that they won the league after the 90th minute in the City game, where they were still 2-1 down – but an equalizer from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero’s later winner secured the Sky Blues the Premier League title ahead of their fiercest rivals based on goal difference.

Article continues below

Another league title was won in classic dramatic fashion when Arsenal beat Liverpool in the 1988-89 season. The Gunners defeated Liverpool 2-0 away at Anfield to win the championship on the last day of the season after the two finished level on points and goal difference.

PSV, Ajax and AZ headed into the final day of the 2006-07 Eredivisie season all level on points.

PSV eventually won the title during a breathless 90 minutes for all sides after winning 5-1 against Vitesse Arnhem which secured them a goal difference of +50 to Ajax’s +49, while AZ lost to Excelsior.

Costa Rica announces Gustavo Matosas as manager – football news

Gustavo Matosas is the new manager of Costa Rica, FEDEFUTBOL announced Tuesday.

The move doesn’t come as a shock. The federation had announced last week that the former Club America and Leon boss was headed to San Jose to negotiate terms on a deal. The parties now have come to agreement, with Matosas set to travel to Monterrey with Costa Rica federation president Rodolfo Villalobos to watch Costa Rica’s friendly with Mexico from the stands Thursday. He will then take in Costa Rica’s match against Colombia in the United States next week before getting to work.

“This is a great honor for me, to represent, through the medium of the national team, a country like Costa Rica. It’s a marvelous challenge that has me feeling very enthusiastic. I’ve spoken with all the people in my immediate family because it’s a marvelous opportunity, so I’m going to take it on as though it were my own country,” said Matosas, who is Uruguayan.

That challenge will include refreshing a national team that had its greatest moments in 2014, making the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Brazil. The Ticos returned to the World Cup in 2018 but failed to make it out of the group stage under the guidance of Oscar Ramirez. Many of Costa Rica’s players were present during those moments, but a younger generation has been slow to emerge. Just one player on Costa Rica’s roster for Russia is under the age of 25 – defender Ian Smith – with 10 players 30 or older.

Article continues below

Matosas’ finest moments as a manager came with Leon where he led Las Panzas Verdes to back-to-back Liga MX titles, becoming just the second team to win the bicampeonato. He later took over Club America, and lifted the Concacaf Champions League trophy. However, he fell short in league play and left the club after elimination by Pachuca in the 2015 Clausura playoffs.

He later went to Atlas before brief spells with clubs in Saudi Arabia, Portugal and Argentina. The manger assured Costa Ricans, though, that he’s in it for the long haul and has his eyes set on getting to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“Dreams always speak more than money,” he said. “I’d love to manage in a World Cup. It would be an honor to arrive there representing a country like Costa Rica. This opportunity was one of the situations that motivated me most about the project.”

Maradona: Messi let down by Mascherano and Argentina traitors – football news

Diego Maradona has reiterated his call for Lionel Messi to turn his back on the Argentina national team after being let down by team-mates such as Javier Mascherano and “traitors” within the FA.

The Barcelona superstar is currently weighing up his international options on the back of a disappointing 2018 World Cup campaign.

He has ruled himself out of contention for current selections, with interim coach Lionel Scaloni being forced to call upon others as the No. 10 jersey is rested alongside a talismanic figure.

Messi has offered no indication as what his future plans will be, after earning 128 caps to date, but an iconic countryman has urged him to remain in exile.

Maradona believes the 31-year-old forward lacks the full support of those around him, with colleagues and administrators failing to divert unfair criticism away from a man who often has to shoulder the expectations of a nation by himself.

The 1986 World Cup winner told Infobae: “That’s why I am telling him not to come back and take all of the blame.

“We will mourn him because there is no other player like him, but just as Messi falls, so does the AFA.”

Maradona added, with former Barcelona star Mascherano singled out as a senior figure who should have done more to defend those around him in Russia: “It is very easy to say that Messi is to blame, but they are going to kill the kid.

“And this kills me because if there are comrades who really love Messi, they should have come out and defended him, not press silence.

“I was wrong about Mascherano, I thought he was a leader. Today, I have to say that Mascherano is not what I believed, but that mistake is totally mine, not his.”

Diego Maradona Uruguay Argentina 2009

Maradona has previously claimed that he would be willing to return for a second spell as coach of the Argentine national side, with it even suggested that he would fill such a role without pay.

He has, however, backtracked on that stance, with there no longer a desire on the part of a man now working with Mexican side Dorados to join forces with those at the AFA.

“I won’t return,” said Maradona.

Article continues below

“I’m really looking forward to doing a lot of things here and in the national team there are a whole bunch of traitors, so I’m not going back.

“We wanted a new AFA and we got [Claudio] Tapia. I’m guilty in that as well. He came to ask for support and I said yes.

“He told me a lot of things and then did nothing, he did not call me anymore. That’s betrayal and I spit in the face of traitors.”

England on verge of ‘something amazing’, says France boss Deschamps – football news

France’s World Cup-winning coach Didier Deschamps thinks England are on the verge of achieving “something amazing” after becoming a real force in international youth football.

After failing to qualify for Euro 2008, an inquest into development took place in English football, with the Football Association (FA) looking to other nations such as Germany and Spain for inspiration.

It took time for obvious results to be made, with the senior side only really starting to see the benefit at this year’s World Cup when they reached the semi-finals for the first time since 1990, but youth success in recent years suggests that even better results could be on the horizon.

England’s Under-17s and Under-20s both won their respective world titles in 2017, while the Under-19s were victorious on the European stage.

Deschamps feels the number of foreign players in the Premier League can have a negative impact, making it more difficult for youngsters to break through, but he has no doubt about England’s potential.

“The Premier League has a specific characteristic because they have economic resources nobody else has,” Deschamps told the Guardian. “A lot of foreigners come over to play.

“In France a young talent who is 17 plays in Ligue 1. I’ve seen that in England it is more complicated. It takes longer.

“So, it takes longer to get to international standard, but it seems there are a young generation of players who have particular quality, winning international titles at youth levels.

“They have the potential to improve and do something amazing.”

One element that attracted significant coverage during France’s World Cup campaign was the team’s diversity, with 15 members of the 23-man squad being of African descent.

Some used this as a basis of criticism, with former Croatia coach Igor Stimac suggesting the final saw his country come up against the “African continent”, but for Deschamps, promoting diversity and integration is an important responsibility of football.

“I start from the principle that any player who is French or has become French is selection-worthy,” Deschamps added.

Didier Deschamps France

“Some players have dual nationality and I am not going to take that away from them, they have freedom to choose, no problem.

“I give absolutely no consideration to a player’s identity, their race, their religion. In fact, it is good for any team to have diversity in it, but they have to agree that what they are representing is France. And like England, like Germany, like many other countries, France is a multicultural society.

“It was an idea that took off in 1998, but it was also something that was taken on by politicians because football has such media presence. They made out it was the representation of an ideal France.

“We are represented by sportsmen of different colours, different cultures, different religions, different origins, but that’s France.

“Quite apart from what they do on the pitch, it is a representation of our social reality. It’s a good vehicle for integration.

“There is a set of basic values that come across which can be transmitted; respect for your team-mates, your opponents, the referee. This educational role is essential for young people.”

Erdogan claims double standards in Ozil controversy – football news

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has branded criticism of Germany internationals Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan for meeting with him prior to the World Cup as “incomprehensible”.

Ozil and Gundogan, both of whom are of Turkish descent, were heavily criticised after being photographed with the controversial Erdogan in London prior to Russia 2018.

After Joachim Low’s side crashed out at the group stage of the tournament, Ozil released a lengthy statement insisting the meeting “had no political intentions”.

The Arsenal playmaker also announced his retirement from international football, hitting out at the German Football Association (DFB) and elaborating on how he felt his Turkish roots had been disrespected in treatment that amounted to “racism”.

“There is nothing to regret,” Erdogan told Funke Mediengruppe, before suggesting double standards were at play.

“As you know, Lothar Matthaus met with Vladimir Putin. Our players should also be able to act with a clear conscience. I regret the people who criticise that.

“We have met many times on different occasions. We also meet Turkish citizens in different countries. Mesut is someone who lives in London. Why should not I meet him while I’m here?

“Should we, if a German football player who plays in our country take a picture with Mrs Merkel, then lynch him? This logic is incomprehensible.

“Ozil and Gundogan can feel that they belong to both countries; the country where they were born and the country where their parents come from.”

Ozil’s retirement statement brought criticism from a host of former players as well as some of his Germany team-mates, yet Erdogan believes his grievances are valid.

“We are proud of our fellow citizens living in Germany, in fact Mesut Ozil said: ‘I play for Germany, but carry Turkey in my heart.’

“He did not leave the German national team for no reason, and anyone else who struggles with these racist attacks and insults would show the same reaction.”

Erdogan won re-election in June against a backdrop of pressure from human rights groups and exiled Turkish citizens, who have denounced his government’s alleged systematic arrest of journalists, civil rights activists and political opponents.

Neymar will mature from World Cup criticism – Alves – football news

Dani Alves believes the heavy dose of criticism Neymar received during and following the World Cup will help the Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain star mature.

Neymar found himself under fire during the summer tournament in Russia, with Brazil exiting in the quarter-final stage amid their talisman’s theatrics.

The attacker’s reactions to contact drew ire from opposing coaches, while fans made memes off his memorable reaction to an incident in the round of 16 against Mexico.

Even fellow players have gotten into the act, as United States international DeAndre Yedlin mocked Neymar’s World Cup’s behavior to a referee during the recent international friendly between the U.S. and Brazil.

Neymar himself released an ad following the World Cup promising to do better, though he complained after a yellow card for diving against El Salvador that the referee was mistaken.

And Alves, Neymar’s international and club team-mate at PSG, is of the belief the experience will help shape Neymar into a better person.

“In life, sometimes things happen that make you mature and make you realize that you have to improve as a professional,” Alves said.

“I’ve talked a lot with Neymar. I think he’s gained experience and the little shots he’s received during the World Cup will make him even more mature – [a] change of behavior.”

That Neymar was roundly criticised for his actions during the World Cup was something that Alves said made a difference in driving the point home that changes had to be made.

“You leave the kid aside and you become a man, and when you start becoming a man, your decisions and attitudes become more weighty,” Alves added. “And I told him that if everyone tells you the same thing and not only one or two people, something is wrong.

“We all have flaws, but we must not stay in one’s flaws. In life, we must try to evolve, because we are all intelligent.”

Neymar returns to PSG after scoring a pair of goals during the international break in Brazil victories over the United States and El Salvador.

However, he may not feature in Ligue 1 against Saint-Etienne this weekend, as head coach Thomas Tuchel considers resting him for next week’s Champions League clash against Liverpool.
