Faith Ikidi made history with Pitea IF as they defeated Osinachi Ohale’s Vaxjo 6-1 at home to win the Swedish Women’s Damallsvenskan title for the first time in their history.
Having lost 1-0 at Rosengård on Monday, Stellan Carlsson’s ladies were dethroned from the top spot by the hosts but tied on 45 points, with the leaders sitting atop with a wide goal advantage.
Going into the final day, Pitea needed a win, while hoping Rosengard slipped at third-placed Kopparberg/Göteborg, who were a point adrift of the top two places, to win the league diadem.
A brace from Madelen Janogy and Jocelyn Blankenship plus Julia Karlenasm and Cecilia Edlunda strikes helped them pip Vaxjo before news of Rosengard’s 3-2 loss guaranteed the title.
After her Saturday’s outstanding role, the 31-year-old, who was making her 20th appearance for the new Swedish champions was named the Player of the Match against Pierre Fondlin’s side.
On the final log, Pitea finished at the top with 48 points, followed by Göteborg with 47 points as both top two teams will represent Sweden in next year’s UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Having been called up by coach Thomas Dennerby, Ikidi will be hoping to end the year with another title success with Nigeria at the 2018 African Women’s Cup of Nations in Ghana.
