Beckham congratulates Ibrahimovic: 500 goals! That makes you really, really old – football news

David Beckham joked that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is “really, really old” as he lauded the LA Galaxy superstar following his 500th career goal.

Ibrahimovic joined Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi as the third active player to score 500 goals between club and country during the Galaxy’s 5-3 loss to Toronto in MLS on Saturday.

The 36-year-old striker celebrated the milestone thanks to an outrageous roundhouse finish – Ibrahimovic spinning and volleying with the outside of his foot in the first half.

Former Galaxy captain Beckham, who played alongside Ibrahimovic at French champions Paris Saint-Germain, heaped praise on Sweden’s all-time leading scorer.

“Zlatan, I want to say congratulations,” Beckham said in a video shared by the Galaxy

“500 goals. What a career, what a player, what an achievement. Pleasure to play with you and against you. Pleasure to be your friend.

“500 goals… that makes you really, really old. But on a serious note, congratulations mate.

“One thing you need to work on. You’re a little bit shy. So, work on it. You’ll get better. Congratulations mate. Incredible.”

After starting his career at Malmo (18) in Sweden, Ibrahimovic has gone on to score goals for Dutch giants Ajax (48), Juventus (26), Inter (66), Barcelona (22), AC Milan (56), Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United (29).

Ibrahimovic was PSG’s top goalscorer with 156 goals before Edinson Cavani broke his record in January.

MLS Review: Zlatan hits 500 in loss, Houston dominates Portland – football news

Zlatan Ibrahimovic brought up a bit of history with his 500th career goal on Saturday night, while the Houston Dynamo got a much-needed win in dominant fashion against the Portland Timber. 

Ibrahimovic rang up number 500 in style , his roundhouse kick pulling a goal back for a Galaxy side that still trailed by two goals even after his brilliant strike. 

The Galaxy did make a comeback, leveling matters briefly before Toronto FC netted twice in the final 15 minutes to take a 5-3 win on the night, leaving LA in need of some positive results to have any shot at a playoff place. 

Toronto has plenty of work to do as well, with the defending MLS Cup champion still nine points back of the sixth and final playoff spot in the East. 

Another team looking to make a late playoff push got a big boost on Saturday, as the Houston Dynamo took a dominant 4-1 win over the Portland Timbers. 

Alejandro Fuenmayor’s own goal had the Timbers in front early on, but Alberth Elis pulled the Dynamo level before a Mauro Manotas brace put the match away. Fuenmayor even atoned for his early mistake with a late goal to give the game its final scoreline. 

A brace from Raul Ruidíaz kept the Seattle Sounders streaking as the club took a 2-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The win makes it nine on the trot for the defending Western Conference champions, who are still not safely in the playoffs but have risen fifth in the Western Conference table. 

Two goals in eight minutes for Miguel Almiron sparked Atlanta United to a 3-0 win over the struggling Colorado Rapids. 

For Atlanta, the win takes the club back to the top of the league table, while the Rapids were officially eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. 

After falling behind early on the Montreal Impact took a 4-1 win over Philadelphia, pulling the Canadian outfit within one point of the Union. The clubs sit fifth and sixth respectively in the Eastern Conference table and are fighting with the Columbus Crew for the fourth spot, which would mean a playoff game at home. 

Speaking of the Crew, they took a respectable 0-0 draw with Western Conference leader FC Dallas on the night to leave themselves just in front of the chasing pack. 

Minnesota United did the chasing pack a favor in the West, holding fourth-placed Real Salt Lake to a 1-1 draw. The result leaves RSL just one point up on Seattle and Portland, while the two Cascadia clubs both hold at least one game in hand on the Lakers. 

Sporting Kansas City made easy work of the San Jose Earthquakes, running to a 5-1 win to stay in second place out West, while the Earthquakes have already been knocked out of playoff contention.

LAFC, the team directly chasing SKC, was held to a 1-1 draw by the New England Revolution. Marco Urena put LAFC out in front just after the break, but rookie Brandon Bye was on hand to score his first MLS goal and earn a draw for the Revs, who are fighting for a playoff spot in the East but still sit outside the top six.

500 for Zlatan: Ibrahimovic joins Messi and Ronaldo with milestone goal – football news

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has now joined an exlcusive club that includes just him, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as active players who have scored 500 career goals for both club and country. 

The big Swede netted his 500th in style, with a roundhouse kick helping him slot the ball past Toronto FC goalkeeper Alex Bono. 

Only Barcelona star Messi and Juventus ace Ronaldo boast more goals among active players than the former Manchester United, PSG, Juventus and Ajax star, who joined up with the MLS side earlier in the season. 

Ibrahimovic has netted 438 goals across 747 appearances in his club career with Malmö FF, Ajax, Juventus, FC Internazionale, FC Barcelona, AC Milan, Paris-Saint Germain, Manchester United and the LA Galaxy, adding 62 goals in 114 senior appearances for Sweden. 

In 18 league appearances with the Galaxy Ibrahimovic now has 17 goals, good for second in the league behind Atlanta United’s Josef Martinez, who set the MLS single-season scoring record with his 28th goal last month. 

During his glitering career, Ibrahimovic has also won 33 trophies, though adding to that tally with the Galaxy this season could prove tough as the club currently sits eighth in the Western Conference and out of the MLS playoff places.

LA Galaxy boss Schmid steps down – football news

Sigi Schmid has stepped down as head coach of the LA Galaxy with six games remaining in the team’s MLS season.

Through 28 games, the Galaxy sit eighth in the West, three points beind Schmid’s former club, the Seattle Sounders, for the sixth and final playoff position in the conference.

Schmid, the most successful coach in MLS history with 266 wins across MLS regular and post-season play, joined the Galaxy in July 2017 after previously taking charge of the club from 1999-2004.

Former San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo coach Dom Kinnear will serve as interim coach through the rest of the 2018 season.

“I have coached at various levels of soccer in the United States for over 35 years, where I have dedicated myself to furthering the sport in our country,” said Schmid in a statement.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to step away from coaching at this time, but would like to remain in the game.

“With six games remaining as the club fights for a playoff spot, I understand the timing of this decision is unfortunate. However, I believe this group can come together and fight for a spot this season under Dom’s guidance.”

Schmid originally rejoined the club midway through the 2017 campaign, replacing Curt Onalfo just several months into his Galaxy tenure. Schmid had previously managed the Sounders and the Columbus Crew while winning two MLS Cups and a record five U.S. Open Cups.

Under Schmid, the Galaxy added a number of important players, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jonathan dos Santos and Perry Kitchen. However, those new signings have not been enough to push the Galaxy into a playoff position due to a six-match winless run that has seen the team concede 18 times.

Kinnear’s first match in charge will be a match against Toronto FC on Saturday with the team’s next three games coming against the Seattle Sounders, Vancouver Whitecaps and Sporting KC, all teams in playoff positions.

“I want to thank Sigi and the LA Galaxy for bringing me here last season,” said Kinnear. “Our focus now is to win as many games as possible through the end of the season.”
