Brendan pleased with cup final contribution – football news

A combative midfielder, goals are not something that Brendan Gan is famed with but it’s not for the lack of trying. Throughout the last few matches in the Malaysia Cup in particular, Brendan has been getting on the end of goalscoring chances but had not been able to find the back of the net.

But on a night when his team and the 40,000 Perak fans in the stadium needed him to find one, Brendan found what could turn out to be the most important goal of his career when the directed the ball into the back of the net in the second minute of added time in the second half.

That goal ensured that Perak stayed in the game and forced Terengganu into extra time with the score tied at 2-2. It also completed Perak’s comeback from 2-0 down after a dismal first half.

“I feel amazing. For me it’s just good to be back on the field. Last year was a very hard year for me and I want to thank the coach for giving me the chance to get back on the field. To win the Malaysia Cup is a massive bonus for myself. The whole year we fought through many adversities and it showed today how we can fight back and get the win.”

“I say that all the time in training that I’m going to save the goals for the important games (chuckles). It just fell to me and it had to go in. Never used my left foot before but decided to use it just for that occasion.

“There were just a lot of running at the end of the day. It was a heavy pitch and pretty much still flooded when we went out there for the warm up. It was testing on the legs and everyone felt it,” said Brendan after the match.

Brendan however did not last the full extra time and was replaced by club captain Nasir Basharudin. The match went into penalty shoot-out and the nervous Brendan felt helpless watching his team mates but paid tributes to the spectacular Hafizul Hakim who saved two decisive penalties.

“Of course it’s nervous not being out there. It’s not in your control. We hadn’t really talked about who will take penalties, it’s about who were confident at that time. The boys did a fantastic job and held their nerves. Hafizul, you can see how good a keeper he is when he saved those penalties,” added Brendan.

The winner’s medal received last night in the Malaysia Cup was Brendan’s first taste of success in Malaysian football, having played here for the past six years. He has worked hard to come back to this level and his ability to be the leader on the pitch for Perak vindicates the hard work that he has put in.

At the end of the day, it also justified the club’s desire to push for Brendan’s signing before the start of the season as Perak lifted the 2018 Malaysia Cup trophy.

Mehmet proud of Perak’s resilience in epic final – football news

Whatever game plan that Mehmet Durakovic and his team thought of going into the final, it was thrown out of the window within the first minute of the match. Idris Ahmad’s back pass to Hafizul Hakim was short and Tchetche Kipre opened the scoring for Terengganu.

Another mistake in the first half from Hafizul this time double Terengganu’s lead and at half time, it looked like that final was slipping away from Perak’s grasp. But credit to Durakovic and Perak who came out in the second half a different team.

Firdaus Saiyadi’s goal right after the restart in the second half sparked Perak’s revival and despite losing influential striker Gilmar Filho to a red card, The Bos Gaurus still managed to find a way back into the game in the dying embers of normal time through Brendan Gan’s equaliser.

“This game will go down in history. To come back after 2-0 and after 3-2, these boys never ever gave up. They deserve all the credit. I’m just a coach, these guys do all the work on the pitch. Very happy for them and their families, the supporters, my staff and my family.”

“Basically at half time, I told them to believe in themselves. There are mistakes in football but needed to forget about it and go again. I cannot ask for anything more, they gave their all. Even at 10 men, I knew these players can fight. They stuck by their guns and deserved everything they got,” said Durakovic in the post-match press conference.

It was another stirring effort from Perak in extra time and just when it looked like the chance had gone to cancel out Faiz Nasir’s goal, came Igor Zonjic with the unfortunate touch in the final minute of extra time to send the match into penalty shoot-out.

It was there that Hafizul redeemed himself for the first half error. Saving the first two Terengganu spot kicks from Zonjic and Thierry Chanta Bin, he set Perak up to eventually win 1-4 in the shoot-out.

Durakovic had nothing but praise for his young custodian despite his earlier mistake and stressed that in the final, only the final result mattered. The win sees Durakovic take his Malaysia Cup tally to five, three as a player and two as a coach.

“Hafizul has been different class and one of the best keepers in the country. Idris has had a fantastic season. The four players at the back are all local and tonight (Saturday) they were brilliant. People make mistakes, you forgive and forget.”

“To be quite honest, everybody makes mistakes. My two players made mistakes but they came back big and strong. The referee make mistakes, the linesman, we all make mistakes, we are all human beings,” added Durakovic.

Perak and Terengganu battle for final day glory – football news

The finale, the match that closes the curtain on Malaysian football in 2018, the Malaysia Cup final will also be the deciding factor which out of Perak and Terengganu FC is the better team. This will be the third final that both teams have contested together in, with both teams having won one final each.

Earlier in the Super League this season, Perak won the home match 3-2 while Terengganu won their home match 2-0. Paired together in Group A of the Malaysia Cup, Perak lost the home match 3-4 while Terengganu lost their home match 1-2.

As luck would have it, the result between the two teams is tied at 1-1 in the Malaysia Cup final and 2-2 in the 2018 season, so it’s almost like fate took its own course and decided that one more match is needed to find a winner between Perak and Terengganu.

The potential banana skin for Perak in the run to the final was not the semi-final clash against Sabah but rather the quarterfinals against PKNS FC, a team which they have not been able to beat in four meetings this year.

Gilmar da Silva, Perak, Malaysia Super League, 28072018

Mehmet Durakovic’s team managed to navigate their way past The Red Ants after winning 0-2 away, following a nil-nil draw in Ipoh. The team is reliant on the attacking pairing of Gilmar Filho and Wander Luiz to be the threat up front and it’s a very complimentary pairing.

The Brazilian duo brings to the table a variation in their respective game that gives Perak just the right combination that defenders fear. Gilmar has the physical prowess and the ability to be in the right place inside the box while Wander has the guile and creativity with that left leg of his that works like a wand.

Comparatively, the Terengganu team could be looked at as the more industrious side of the two teams. In Lee Tuck who easily clocks the highest mileage in any match, they have someone who has the craft but also put in his fair shift of work.

Of course, the danger up front is Tchetche Kipre, the talismanic skipper for Terengganu. His goals in the second leg against mighty Johor Darul Ta’zim were what took his team to the final and there were palpable fear in the stands at Tan Sri Dato Hj Hassan Yunos Stadium, every time Kipre has the ball at his feet.

Tchetche Kipre, Terengganu FC

There will be interesting battles all over the pitch as well with Faiz Nasir or Ashaari Samsudin going up against Leandro dos Santos, Kamal Azizi trying to stop the penetrative runs of Nor Hakim Hassan and J. Parthiban attempting to stop the team that gave him his professional bow.

Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday will be filled to the brim with both sets of fans looking forward to end a long winless run in the Malaysia Cup. A battle between the two teams who have been neck and neck for a majority of the season – it is high time a winner is found between the two teams.

Flashback: When Perak beat Terengganu in 1998 – football news

This final in 1998 was the first that was held in the newly-built Bukit Jalil National Stadium that only just hosted the 1998 Commonweath Games before that. Close to 90,000 spectators took their first sittings of the magnificent stadium holding one of the most important match of the Malaysian football calendar.

Perak were the first to strike when V. Saravanan opened the scoring in the 58th minute but Rosli Derus equalised for Terengganu in the 83rd minute. With the score tied at 1-1, the match went into extra time and then penalty shoot-out.

Roslan Hamid, Khairul Anuar Baharom and Lim Seng Kong had all converted their spot kicks for Perak while Anuar Jusoh, Jean Nyima and Rosaidi Wahab score for Terengganu and the match was still tied at 3-3 after six kicks.

Chan Kok Heng put the next one past Zubir Ibrahim to give Perak the lead at 4-3 before Badrul Hisham Abdullah became the first player to miss. That left Janos Krecska with the chance to be a hero for Perak and he did not dissapoint as Perak emerged winners with a 5-3 result.

Perak: Zamri Mat Arif, Chan Kok Heng, Khairul Anuar Baharom, Janos Krecska, Roslan Hamid, Chan Wing Hoong, Lim Seng Kong, Gyorgy Takacs (P. Gunasekaran), Azrul Amri Borhan (Raja Azlan Shah), V. Saravanan, M. Nagaraja

Terengganu: Zubir Ibrahim, Azman Ismail, Anuar Jusoh, Rosdi Talib, Jean Nyima, Syamsol Saad (Zulharizan Awang), Mohd Noor Derus, Seidu Issifu, Badrul Hisham Abdullah, Wan Ahmad Ridzuan Hussin (Baharuddin Ali), Samuel Chebli

Malaysia Cup round-up: Quarter-finalists confirmed save for stubborn Group C – football news

BY        ZULHILMI ZAINAL       Follow on Twitter

The penultimate round of the 2018 Malaysia Cup group stage was played over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and six teams have booked their places in the knockout stage.

Group A

Perak will follow Terengganu FC into the next stage, when the former beat the latter 2-1 in Kuala Terengganu. Gilmar da Silva opened the scoring for the visitors in the 21st minute, and the hosts were made to wait until the 65th minute for the equaliser, an Ashari Samsudin half-volley from inside the box. But Gilmar found the winner three minutes from time, to take the Bos Gaurus through to the quarter-finals.

Terengganu-Perak match highlights

Despite a 4-3 away win over Kuala Lumpur, Felcra FC‘s chances of qualifying have evaporated. The Rivals goals were scored by Aziz Rahim (20′, 43′ p.), Nazrul Kamaruzaman (68′) and David Laly (83′), while the hosts’ goals came from Gilherme de Paula’s goals (60′, 82′ p.), and Zainudin Abidin’s 74th minute own goal.

KL-Felcra match highlights

Standings: Terengganu (10) Perak (10) Felcra (5) Kuala Lumpur (3)

Group B

Felda United booked their knockout stage slot with a 2-0 win over PDRM at home. Their goals were scored by Thiago Fernandes in the 66th minute, and Gilberto Fortunato in injury time.

Felda-PDRM match highlights

PKNS FC advanced at the expense of Melaka United, after defeating the Mousedeers 2-1 in Shah Alam. Romel Morales opened the scoring for the hosts in the 23rd minute, before in-form Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim equalised in the 54th minute. Rafael Ramazotti netted the winner in the 66th minute, heading in a corner kick.

PKNS-Melaka match highlights

Standings: Felda (10) PKNS (10) Melaka (6) PDRM (1)

Group C

Group C remains the only group without a confirmed quarter-finalists, and even its last-placed team still keeps a mathematical chance of reaching the knockout stage. Group leaders MISC-MIFA, playing without their suspended foreign stars L’Imam Seydi and Kpah Sherman, were held to a goalless draw against Kelantan in Kota Bharu.

Kelantan-MIFA match highlights

Kedah meanwhile continued their resurgence, by defeating defending champions JDT 3-1 at home. The hosts needed only six minutes to open the scoring, thanks to Sandro da Silva’s goal, but Fernando Marquez equalised for the visitors thirty minutes later. A defensive mix-up in the JDT defence then allowed Akhyar Rashid to give the Red Eagles the lead again two minutes into the second half. JDT centre back Marcos Antonio was sent off for a second booking one minute before the end, and Liridon Krasniqi sealed the win with a wonderful curling goal deep in injury time.

Kedah-JDT match highlights

Standings: MIFA (8) Kedah (8), JDT (6) Kelantan (5)

Group D

Needing a win to confirm their quarter-final slot, Pahang instead lost 3-1 at home to ten-man Selangor, who were already unable to advance. A defensive error allowed Rufino Segovia to open the scoring for the visitors in the seventh minute, but they were down to ten men in 28th minute after defender Ashmawi Yakin was shown a straight red for a desperate foul on Mohamadou Sumareh right outside the penalty area. The ensuing free kick was brilliantly put away by Safuwan Baharudin. But another defensive mix-up allowed the Red Giants to go in front again, this time through Willian Pacheco’s 48th minute goal. Deep in injury time, Pahang’s misery was compounded when Sarkunan Krishnansamy pounced on a rebound to score their third goal of the night.

Pahang-Selangor match highlights

Luckily for the Elephants, the result of the other match in the group favoured them. Underdogs Sabah, whose qualification was secured by Pahang’s defeat, returned the favour by edging PKNP FC 2-0 at the Pulau Pinang State Stadium. Goals by Rodoljub Paunovic (31′) and Hector Ramos (81′) secured the Rhinos’ knockout stage slot and also top spot in the group.

PKNP-Sabah match highlights

Standings: Sabah (13) Pahang (8) PKNP (4) Selangor (3)
