Dortmund’s Gotze needs right coach to return to his best, says former youth boss – football news

Mario Gotze’s former youth coach Peter Hyballa believes the Borussia Dortmund midfielder can return to his best as long as he plays under the right coach.

Gotze became a national hero when he scored the extra-time winner for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina in Brazil, but his career has been in steady decline since.

The 26-year-old returned to Dortmund from Bayern Munich in 2016 but was diagnosed with a metabolic disorder the following year, severely limiting his first-team opportunities.

Gotze is now back to full fitness but has yet to start a Bundesliga game this season, though he did come off the bench to score in a 4-3 win over Augsburg before the international break. The midfielder also scored one and set up another on a 4-0 friendly win over fourth-tier Alemannia Aachen on Monday.

News of Gotze’s revival is of no surprise to Hyballa, who managed him while in charge of Dortmund’s Under-17 side. He is confident Gotze can return to his previous form but he needs the right coach to bring the best out of him.

“He can still play. But he obviously needs the right coach, “ Hyballa told GBP Sports and Spox. “I used to think that Mario plays in every team. But apparently he already needs a free-spirit coach and no structure coach.

“Mario is a free spirit himself and with such a player you have to talk a lot. And not all trainers understand that. Especially in Germany.”

Aside from the right coaching, Hyballa says Gotze may have struggled to live up to expectations after the highs of the World Cup and suggests a move away from Germany could prove beneficial if he continues to struggle for regular action at Dortmund.

“I do not want to give him any tips, that’s not for me. He just has to keep going and maybe relax a bit. There are other things in life than football.

“From my external perspective, I see only two possibilities: Either, he prevails at Borussia Dortmund or he goes abroad.

“But of course it’s also a matter of mind. Of course he’s been listening for years: you’re the best, you’re the best. And he said back then that he sees himself among the best clubs in the world.

“That’s why he’s always put the most pressure on himself. He is a perfectionist, but this claim also wears you down.”

Hyballa also admits he had no doubts Gotze would make it as a professional the moment he came to train with his Dortmund U-19 side.

The 42-year-old, who is current coach of Slovak club Dunajska Streda, also credits the sometimes harsh approach towards Gotze by his fellow youth coaches as Dortmund, which ultimately aided the youngster’s development.

“Our youth goalkeeping coach Matthias Kleinsteiber, who also led the BVB Youth Board, drew my attention to him. And then a small chubby guy came to us, but he did just about everything right. Actually, I’m always very emotional in training, but when I saw that, I was pretty quiet for a while.

“Then I called the then U-17 coach and said: He will not come back to you. We played a huge season back then and played for the championship and the cup in the finals. Mario was very fast an integral part of the team, has played on the 10 and on the wings.

“At that time one already saw what incredible qualities he possesses. He sees spaces, has an outstanding technique and incredible talent. For example, we did a triathlon in the training camp, so he swam it all the others. Since I thought: Is there anything he is not able to do? But you have to say one thing.

“His development does not come from God alone, but also the youth department of Borussia Dortmund. Because the trainers at BVB also had a very rude, direct nature, as it belongs somewhere in the Ruhr area. And this speech was just right for Mario. You do not always have to sensitively tackle a sensitive person, but sometimes tackle it counter productively to get the most out of it.”

Korkut sacked by Stuttgart after winning just one of first seven Bundesliga games – football news

Stuttgart have sacked head coach Tayfun Korkut after a run of just one win in seven matches at the start of the Bundesliga season.

A 3-1 loss to fellow strugglers Hannover on Saturday saw them drop to the foot of the table, with just five points to their name and a goal difference of minus seven.

The club have responded by dismissing Korkut and his two assistants, Ilija Aracic and Steven Cherundolo, despite him having signed a contract extension in June.

“The lack of development in the course of this season and the negative results have led us to take this step,” said sporting director Michael Reschke.

“Tayfun Korkut took over the team last season in a very difficult situation and secured with an extraordinary run this Bundesliga season for VfB. We are very grateful to him and his two assistant coaches Ilija Aracic and Steven Cherundolo.”

President Wolfgang Dietrich added: “This decision was very difficult for us. After the pleasing progress of the past season, we were confident that we could continue the positive development with Tayfun Korkut as head coach in the new season.

“Unfortunately, that was not successful. Above all, our responsibility lies with VfB Stuttgart and its sporting future.”

Korkut, 44, took over in January and guided Stuttgart away from the relegation zone to a seventh-place finish.

Coaches Andreas Hinkel, Matthias Schiffers, Marco Langner and Andreas Schumacher will take charge of the first team until a replacement is named.

Pavard denies Bayern agreement as World Cup winner eyes move abroad – football news

Stuttgart star Benjamin Pavard denied he agreed to join Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, though the Frenchman suggested he will leave Germany at the end of the season.

Pavard – contracted until 2021 – was heavily linked with Bayern prior to the transfer window closing after helping France win the World Cup in Russia.

The 22-year-old remains in Stuttgart amid reported interest from Premier League trio Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal.

Discussing the Bayern links, Pavard – on international duty with France for the UEFA Nations League – told L’Equipe : “I did not sign anything at all [with Bayern].

You are the journalists who say that I signed [for Bayern].

“I’m in Stuttgart, I’m fine there. My career plan was to stay one more season in Germany.

“I am in a very big German club, with fantastic fans. This club is a family, that’s what I need and that’s what I like about this club. I’m very good there.

“It’s true that the World Cup came faster than expected, nobody expected it, not even me at the very beginning.”

Pavard made a name for himself with France at the World Cup this summer, with his sensational volley against Argentina voted the World Cup’s goal of the tournament .

Goretzka earns praise from Bayern boss Kovac after first goal – football news

Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovac congratulated Leon Goretzka after the midfielder opened his goalscoring account for the Bundesliga champions.

Former Schalke prodigy Goretzka, who arrived in the off-season, scored one and set up another as Bayern defeated Stuttgart 3-0 on Saturday.

The 23-year-old curled home the opener away to Stuttgart before teeing up Robert Lewandowski to make it 2-0 at Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Speaking to reporters about Goretzka post-match, Kovac said: “I’m very happy. He did a good job in the pre-season. He played a little bit less minutes than others all the time.

“But for today we had the feeling that he is the right player to start with his ability to create space, his aggressiveness and his pace. He can help us a lot with that.

“The opening was a shot from 16 meters so from then on, the game was a bit easier for us.

“I’m happy for him that he scored his first goal in his first Bundesliga game with Bayern. Or was it his second game already? Yes, right his second. So it was his first goal and I’m happy for him.”

Bayern continued their winning start under Kovac thanks to a three-goal second half away from home.

The first half proved frustrating for Bayern, who finally made the breakthrough in the second 45 via Goretzka, Lewandowski and Thomas Muller.

Article continues below

“I’m very happy about my team’s performance,” Kovac added. “We played very concentrated over the whole 90 minutes. Defensively and offensively. How many chances we had in the second half shows that we are able to do a lot of good things with the ball.

“I hope that we can keep our game on that level. I think we can do that in the future, too. But I know every new game is different. And we have to prove what we are capable to do in every single game.”
