Veteran coach Claude Le Roy pleads for patience on Senegal’s Aliou Cisse – football news

Veteran French coach Claude Le Roy has asked Senegalese people to be patient with Aliou Cisse, tipping the current team for bigger things in future.

After Le Roy helped Senegal qualify for the 1990 and 1992 Africa Cup of Nations finals, Cisse has become the only other Teranga Lions coach to guide the team to a second straight tournament.

The former Senegal captain led Senegal at the 2017 Afcon finals in Gabon, with their run ending at the quarter-final stage where they were eliminated by eventual champions Cameroon.

In July Cisse extended his Teranga Lions contract which has a target of reaching the final of the tournament.

“Aliou Cisse is not bad,” Le Roy was quoted as saying by Wiwsport.

“He came not long ago. Give him time to build a team. I think that with time, the team will be fine. He managed to qualify Senegal to the World Cup in Russia.

“This is not bad. Then we see new Senegalese players coming in and it’s only good…In Africa or elsewhere, it is this patience which misses. Cisse knows well the house that has been entrusted to him.”

Senegal beat Sudan 1-0 away on Tuesday to secure a berth for the 2019 Afcon with two games to spare.

Everton’s Idrissa Gueye, Rennes’ Mbiaye Niang lead Senegal past Sudan – football news

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye and Mbaye Niang scored a goal each as Senegal thrashed Sudan by 3-0 in Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

After their poor run of results of two draws and a loss since their 2-1 win over Poland in Russia, the Teranga Lions put on a great display to give the home fans an emphatic win.

Pape Abou Cisse had a goalscoring debut for the west Africans after breaking the deadlock at the Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium with his effort in the 17th minute.

Gueye doubled the lead a minute later with his second international goal for Senegal. After the restart, Niang capped the victory for Aliou Cisse’s men with effort in the 50th minute.

The victory moved Senegal to the summit of Group A with 7 points from three games and with a higher goal difference than Madagascar that also have the same points.

They continue their qualification series for next year’s continental showpiece against Sudan in Khartoum on Tuesday.

Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane nominated for 2018 Fifa FIFPro World11 – football news

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have been named in the 55-man shortlist for 2018 Fifa FIFPro World11 following their stellar performances at Liverpool and for their respective countries in the year under review.

Both players will slug it out with 13 other forwards for three attacking slots.

The recognition comes after Salah and Mane’s immense contributions to Liverpool’s 2017-18 campaign, helping the Reds to a third-place finish in the English Premier League and a Uefa Champions League final spot.

Salah, in his debut campaign at Anfield, scored 44 goals and swept major awards including the Premier League Player of the Year gong, and last week, was second runners-up at the Uefa Men’s Player of the Year award behind Cristiano Ronaldo and winner Luka Modric.

His Reds teammate Mane contributed 20 goals, including one in the Champions League final, thus, becoming the first Senegalese to do so.

After beating nerves to help Egypt secure a ticket to participate at the World Cup finals for the first time in 28 years, Salah’s unfortunate shoulder injury, picked in Liverpool’s UCL final loss against Real Madrid, prevented him from influencing the Pharaohs’ run in Russia, but he ended up with two goals.

Mane’s Senegal were a tad unlucky in Russia, losing a knockout stage slot due to cards accumulation. Their captain appeared in all three games and scored once.

This term, the duo have continued from where they stopped and already have six goals between themselves to help Jurgen Klopp’s side maintain their 100 per cent start to the season and a place at the summit of the Premier League log.

Samuel Eto’o [2005 & 2006] and Didier Drogba [2007] are the only Africans to have made the World XI. The forwards will hope to emulate the Cameroon and Cote d’Ivoire legends.
