I fined him for his goal at Old Trafford! Giggs delighted for Wales hero Wilson – football news

Wales boss Ryan Giggs lauded Harry Wilson for his exceptional free-kick against the Republic of Ireland, joking that he fined the youngster for scoring a similar goal against Manchester United earlier in the season.

Wilson’s sensational set-piece strike proved the difference in Dublin on Tuesday, as Wales moved top of their Nations League group with a 1-0 victory.

The Liverpool winger – on loan at Derby County in the Championship – scored an equally as impressive free-kick against Giggs’ former club United in the EFL Cup in September, and the Wales manager was delighted to see Wilson continue his form on the international stage.

“Harry Wilson, I fined him for the goal at Old Trafford a few weeks ago, I won’t be tonight!” Giggs joked to Sky Sports.

“He does it all the time in training; it’s practice, practice, practice.

“I’m so proud – they dug in right to the end. It was a brilliant second-half performance.

“The determination pleased me, to not give a goal away. We set out to win the group. It’s a tough group and now it is in our hands.”

Wales are already guaranteed a place in pot two of the draw for Euro 2020 qualifying, and a win against Denmark in their next outing will secure promotion to the top tier of the Nations League.

Ireland, meanwhile, will be relegated to League C should Giggs’ side fail to beat the Danes, and Martin O’Neill lamented a lack of creativity in his squad after the home defeat.

Article continues below

“I felt we should have scored early on, and we are not renowned for scoring a lot of goals so we need to take our chances,” O’Neill told Sky Sports.

“It was a grandstand finish and I thought we could have got something, but I thought there were a lot of positives despite the result.

“They have a great spirit, we lack a little bit of technical ability. We have spirit in abundance but that won’t take you everywhere. We need to be more creative if we can.”

Ramsey drops out of Wales squad for ‘family reasons’ – football news

Aaron Ramsey has withdrawn from the Wales squad to face Republic of Ireland due to “family reasons”.

The Arsenal midfielder played the full 90 minutes for his country last time out as Wales were thumped 4-1 by Spain at the Millennium Stadium.

But he joins Real Madrid star Gareth Bale in being unavailable to face the Irish in the UEFA Nations League, with his absence presumably associated with his wife Colleen being due to give birth to twins.

Ryan Giggs’s side will also be without Ethan Ampadu for the game at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday as Wales aim to pick up their second win of their Nations League campaign having already beaten Ireland.

Article continues below

Gwion Edwards, Kieron Freeman and Swansea City winger Daniel James have all been called up as replacements for Giggs’s depleted squad.

Ramsey’s situation at club level has dominated the back pages in the build-up to the international break, with the midfielder looking increasingly likely to leave Arsenal next summer.

Republic of Ireland v Denmark: TV channel, live stream, squad news & preview – football news

The Republic of Ireland host Denmark at the Aviva Stadium in the UEFA Nations League for the first time since their 5-1 mauling in the second leg of their World Cup Qualifying play-off.

The Danes’ star man, Christian Eriksen, put the Irish to the sword that day, scoring a hat-trick, but injury keeps him out of his country’s second fixture in this competition.

His double got Denmark all three points in their opening fixture against Wales, and Age Hareide’s side will have to replace the midfielder’s goals in his absence.

Ireland, however, were beaten soundly by the Welsh and will need a much-improved performance from the 4-1 defeat if they are to avoid a similar scoreline against a side who have lost just once in two years.

Position Republic of Ireland squad
Goalkeepers Doyle, Randolph, McDermott
Defenders Christie, Doherty, Duffy, Keogh, Clark, Long, Egan, Stevens, Lenihan, D. Williams
Midfielders Hendrick, Hourihane, Browne, S. Williams, Meyler, Arter, O’Dowda, McClean
Forwards Long, Maguire, Robinson, O’Brien, Hogan

Ireland boss Martin O’Neill is without star defender Seamus Coleman, while Stephen Ward is also injured, leaving the hosts short at full-back.

However, Shane Long and James McClean appear to have recovered in time from ankle and wrist injuries, respectively.

Potential Ireland XI: Randolph; Stevens, Clark, Duffy, Christie; Arter; McClean, Hourihane, Hendrick, O’Dowda; Long

Position Denmark squad
Goalkeepers Schmeichel, Ronnow, Lossl
Defenders Kjaer, Ankersen, Christensen, Stryger Larsen, Zanka, Vestergaard, Dalsgaard, Knudsen
Midfielders Schone, Delaney, Hojbjerg, Jensen, Lerager, Christiansen
Forwards Poulsen, Braithwaite, Cornelius, Sisto, Dolberg, Gytkjaer

Denmark’s most glaring issue is the absence of Tottenham midfielder Eriksen, who is their most potent goal-threat and regular set-piece taker.

Aside from that, Hareide has no other significant injuries to contend with, although Rosenborg striker Nicklas Bendtner misses out after being charged with assaulting a taxi driver in Copenhagen last month.

Potential Denmark XI: Schmeichel; Stryger Larsen, Kjaer, Christensen, Dalsgaard; Delaney, Hojbjerg, Schone; Sisto, Cornelius, Poulsen

Match Preview

James McClean Republic of Ireland Thomas Delaney Denmark

Ireland sit bottom of Group B4 in the Nations League after their defeat to Wales, while Denmark are above Wales on goal difference with a game in hand.

A win in Ireland would put the Danes in pole position to top the Group and achieve promotion, while the hosts need to pick up points from somewhere quickly if they are to avoid relegation.

They will be thankful that Eriksen, who has scored 15 in his last 17 competitive appearances for Denmark, is sidelined through injury, but their performance in Wales should be cause for real concern.

Speaking to a press conference ahead of the game, Denmark head coach Hareide said: “[Eriksen]’s a good player, an important player for us, but we haven’t focused on him not being there but on the players who are here. We may have to play a different way without him but we have shown we have a lot of good players in Denmark. We don’t want being without Christian to be an excuse after the game. We need to show ourselves and do our best.”

Article continues below

Hareide also praised the new Nations League and alluded to his side’s aim of promotion to a higher division, with the aim of playing European heavyweights on a regular basis: “It’s a lot better than playing friendly matches and it gives you a chance to play against the top teams the next time if you get promoted – that’s very interesting.

“It’s usually very hard to get games against teams like France, Spain and Germany, teams who attract huge crowds.”

I don’t care what Martin O’Neill thinks about Matt Doherty – Nuno – football news

Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo has applauded Matt Doherty and insists he does not care what Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill thinks about the right-back after he scored the winner against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Doherty has three Ireland caps to his name and has been called up again for upcoming Nations League games against Denmark and Wales.

But many supporters have been confused by how infrequently Doherty – who has flourished over the last few years for Wolves – has been used by O’Neill, sparking suggestions there is a personal issue between the two.

Doherty has previously claimed O’Neill wants him to attack more, though he also suggested “maybe my face just doesn’t fit in” after apparently having his defensive capabilities questioned by the experienced manager as well.

But Nuno is happy with the 26-year-old, after he produced an enterprising performance as a wing-back in Wolves’ 1-0 win at Palace, scoring the winner after a smart exchange with Raul Jimenez.

When O’Neill’s apparent comments were put to Nuno, he told reporters: “Matt has been doing his job since last season.

“He didn’t change the way he approaches the competitions and he’s doing well. What others think and what others want, I don’t really care.

“What I want is what he’s giving me and giving his team-mates, not only in the offensive part but in defence and set-pieces, because he’s a very important player.”

Nuno’s counterpart on Saturday was Roy Hodgson, and the former England manager was keen to deflect blame from goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, who was beaten by Doherty at his near post for the game’s solitary goal.

Article continues below

“He had almost nothing to do in the first half and made a fantastic save,” Hodgson said. “I thought they might score that.

“For the goal, it is not just the goalkeeper. You look at defenders as well, and the guy [Doherty] took the chance.

“[It was] good work from them, but any goal you concede is a bad one, because someone somewhere could have done better.”

‘England have got into his head’ – Given hits out at Southgate over Rice pursuit – football news

Former Ireland international goalkeeper Shay Given has criticised Gareth Southgate and the England managerial staff for getting into the head of teenage defender Declan Rice.

Capped three times for Ireland, the 19-year-old West Ham player is not yet tied to the country after only featuring in friendlies.

Rice, who was born in Surrey and qualifies for Ireland due to his grandparents, has impressed for the Hammers this term after moving into a defensive midfield role.

Martin O’Neill had hoped that he would feature in the Nations League match against Wales earlier this season, but he pulled out of the squad.

Given, meanwhile, is angry with the role he thinks the England staff played in the decision.

“He’s played three games for Ireland but I think Gareth Southgate or someone from England has got into his head,” he complained to TalkSport.

“I think once you pull on the senior jersey for your country that should be it – your colours nailed to the mast and you should play.

“But the rules are not tied down to that.

“It’s a big decision, he’s a young man and I’m sure a lot of people would be in his ear about playing for England.

“But we would love him to play for Ireland, of course we would.”

Article continues below

When it was suggested that assistant boss Roy Keane might have scared the youngster away, Given replied: “When Roy says something it’s big news and the media jump all over it, that’s the problem, but no, I don’t think Declan Rice is scared of anybody.”

Rice has played three times for West Ham in the Premier League this season, including their recent victory over Everton and a scoreless draw against Chelsea on Sunday.

With Ireland set to play Denmark and Wales in the Nations League in October, the picture of his international future is likely to become clearer over the coming weeks.

Asensio, Balotelli and the winners and losers of international week – football news

WINNER: MARCUS RASHFORD

Marcus Rashford England 2018-19

Many England players emerged from the World Cup with their reputations enhanced. It must be said that Marcus Rashford wasn’t one of those.

While the country fell in love with the likes of Kieran Trippier and Harry Maguire, Rashford was somewhat on the fringes and did not contribute a lot to the English charge to the semi-finals.

He has however started the new cycle in fine form.

England may have lost against Spain on Saturday in their UEFA Nations League opener but Rashford was bright and busy, scoring the opener and serving a reminder of his capabilities to the onlooking Jose Mourinho.

He was efficient in front of goal on Tuesday as well when England beat Switzerland in a friendly at the King Power Stadium, scoring the only goal of the game.

It’s been a difficult start to the Premier League season for Rashford – and indeed for Manchester United as a whole – but goals in back-to-back games for the first time for his country will do his confidence the world of good.

WINNER: GEORGE WEAH

George Weah

Some 15 years after his retirement, the president of Liberia George Weah made an incredible international comeback in a 2-1 home defeat to Nigeria.

Weah, Africa’s only Ballon d’Or winner, was to be honoured at the game in the Samuel Doe Stadium in Monrovia where his legendary No. 14 shirt was to be retired.

Those in attendance were taken by surprise when Weah – now aged 51 – led the Lone Stars out with the captain’s armband instead of merely watching from the stands.

He lasted an impressive 79 minutes and by all accounts put in quite a shift despite a paunch reflecting his years of good living. James Debbah – one of Weah’s former international team-mates – also played aged 48.

There are repercussions in Nigeria where many are demanding answers on why the NFF agreed to send a senior representative team to play in a glorified friendly.

For the president – elected in a runoff last December – it was a fond farewell on the same night his son Timothy played for the United States against Mexico.

WINNER: RICHARLISON

Richarlison Brazil El Salvador Friendly 11092018

A strong start to the season for new club Everton preceded a first call-up to the Brazil squad for Richarlison, who took Pedro’s place late in the day.

And having been handed the legendary No. 9 shirt by Tite, the £50 million man made quite the impression on his first start for his country.

He won an early penalty against El Salvador in a Stateside friendly – which Neymar converted – before Richarlison stole the show himself in front of goal.

Brazil won 5-0 – to add to their 2-0 win last week over the United States – and Richarlison provided the pick of the bunch.

He scored in either half; the first a curler into the top corner and the second a powerful effort from the edge of the box.

With that performance and those goals, he will have served notice of his abilities to Tite, who is plotting the next stage of Brazil’s cycle after a disappointing World Cup.

WINNER: MARCO ASENSIO

Marco Asensio Spain 2018-19

Long heralded as one of the coming forces in world football, this is expected to be the season Marco Asensio stands among the elites.

He has won two Champions Leagues with Real Madrid but now with Cristiano Ronaldo gone he will step up to become one of the European champions’ key players.

And for his country too, Asensio looks ready to become a superstar.

Spain have won six points from six in their opening Nations League fixtures and on Tuesday night Asensio ran the game against Croatia.

The World Cup semi-finalists were smashed 6-0 by Spain with Asensio providing three assists as well as a stunning long-range strike of his own.

LOSERS: ITALY AND BALOTELLI

Balotelli Italy Poland

This was supposed to mark the start of a new era under Roberto Mancini.

The 2006 World Cup winners failed to qualify for this year’s tournament and so a new regime took over. Italy, however, look scarcely better for swapping Giampiero Ventura for the former Inter manager.

They were lacklustre and out of ideas in a 1-1 draw against Poland before succumbing to a 1-0 loss against Portugal on Sunday.

Alarmingly, they have won a total of two matches in a year of football – a World Cup qualifier against Albania and a friendly against Saudi Arabia. They are a team bereft of confidence and ability.

One thing they have been lacking is firepower in front of goal. Mario Balotelli being sent back to his club for being a reported 15 kilograms over weight will not have helped the cause and they are already looking at Nations League relegation.

LOSERS: IRELAND AND ROY KEANE

Roy Keane Ireland

Controversy is raging in Ireland with assistant manager Roy Keane predictably at the centre of things.

A leaked WhatsApp voice message from left-back Stephen Ward detailed two extraordinary training camp rows between Keane and Irish internationals Jonathan Walters and Harry Arter. It has led to calls for Keane’s sacking given the manner in which he addressed the players and brought questions about exactly what it is he does in Martin O’Neill’s regime.

That overshadowed things to such an extent that it was easy to forget Ireland were hammered in their opening Nations League fixture against Wales before giving up a late draw away to Poland in a friendly.

The Irish public has simply been turned off the national team given the poor levels of performance in recent games and the lack of anything approaching a shake-up – in the boardroom, the dugout or on the pitch.

The rot has well and truly set in.

LOSERS: ICELAND

Iceland Belgium Nations League

The surprise team of Euro 2016 have long since shed their underdog tag and are struggling with life at a higher level.

Article continues below

They qualified well for the World Cup but could not get out of their group. Now their failings are being exposed in the Nations League.

They were annihilated 6-0 by Switzerland on matchday one before the boos rang out in Reykjavik on matchday two as Belgium ran riot with a 3-0 victory.

It was their first home defeat since June 2013 and a demoralising one at that given they were in the game until Eden Hazard scored from the penalty spot.

Match Preview

Shaun Williams, Republic of Ireland

Ireland travel to Poland to take part in a friendly following on from both sides Nations League games, ending in a defeat for the Boys in Green and a draw for the Eagles

Despite the 4-1 defeat to Wales, Ireland’s full-back Enda Stevens believes that they will be able to bounce back from the loss,

“Thursday was obviously disappointing. Heads were down,” Stevens told reporters after the game on Thursday.

“It was an all-round tough night. Every time they went forward they seemed to score and it’s a tough ask to come back from 3-0 down at half-time but we’ve got to get over it as quickly as possible.”

Polish forward Lewandowski could earn his 100th senior cap for the national team if playing tonight but manager Jerzy Brzeczek has warned the squad not to start celebrating too soon.

Article continues below

“Even thinking that you can win against Ireland without full engagement could be a huge mistake,” Brzeczek said ahead of tonight’s game.

“We have huge respect and we know that 90 minutes of a very good game will decide who is going to leave the pitch as a winner.”

Poland are the favourites to win tonight and will be keen to win after a disappointing World Cup where they finished bottom of their group.

September 2018 international break: Every match, kick-off times & competition details – football news

Following a month of World Cup action over the summer, the first international break of the 2018-19 season has arrived.

Premier League and Ligue 1 teams have so far played out four fixtures each, La Liga and Serie A three, while the new Bundesliga campaign is only two games in as we head into a 10-day rest period.

The 2018 September break sees the introduction of the new, bi-yearly UEFA Nations League, where 55 teams are split into four leagues (A-D), each consisting of four groups.

The winners of Group B, C and D will win promotion, while those who finish bottom of Groups A, B and C will be relegated. Then, in June 2019, the four league winners of Group A will contest the semi-finals, a third-place play-off and a final for the title of Nations League champions.

The England national team will meet for the first time since their World Cup semi-final run at the Russia World Cup ahead of their opener against Spain at Wembley on Saturday, before travelling to face Switzerland in a friendly on Tuesday.

And while manager Gareth Southgate has explained the tournament format to his Three Lions squad, not all of them are yet familiar with the system.

“It is quite confusing – I don’t know what you guys think of it?” said Harry Maguire when asked for his opinion of the new concept. “The boss tried to explain it to us the best he could the other day. I think he has got his head around it now, but it took a lot of studying.

“It is confusing, but we are trying to get our heads round it. For us players, we just go into each game trying to win it and see where it takes us. So we will see after the game.”

Article continues below

There are also a host of friendlies across the international break, as well as the second round of fixtures from the African Cup of Nations qualifying.
