Match Preview

Jose Mourinho Man Utd 2018

Bournemouth captain Simon Francis suggested that Bournemouth could be considered favourites going into their clash against Manchester United and he might have a point.

The Cherries are above the Red Devils in the table and have put together a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions, with five wins and a draw. United, on the other hand, have been worryingly inconsistent.

Article continues below

With just 10 games played in the league, Mourinho’s men have dropped points against Chelsea, Wolves, Brighton, West Ham and Tottenham this season already, while they were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

Erratic results on the pitch have been matched by the apparent disharmony off it too, with players such as Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez all butting heads with the their boss.

United are approaching a critical juncture in their campaign and the outcome of their game against Bournemouth could well have a profound knock-on effect, with Juventus and Manchester City to come next.

Premier League top scorers 2018-19: Hazard & Aubameyang lead the race – football news

The Premier League is well and truly underway, and the race to win the Golden Boot – awarded to the league’s top-scorer – has begun.

Liverpool sensation Mohamed Salah is looking to defend his title after a record-breaking haul of 32 goals last year nabbed him the prize, but Chelsea forward Eden Hazard and Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang currently lead the way, followed closely by Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero.

GBP Sports will keep you updated on the individual goal tallies for the highest-scoring Premier League players this season.

Premier League 2018-19 Top Scorers

Eden Hazard

Chelsea forward Hazard is a front-runner for this year’s Golden Boot following his stellar start to the season, buoyed by an equally impressive World Cup campaign with Belgium in Russia where his side placed third.

The Belgian only managed to score 12 goals last season in the Premier League – although he missed a few weeks of the season due to injury – and could very well surpass last year’s haul before the end of the year. Despite making no secret of his desires to fulfil his childhood dream of joining European giants Real Madrid, Hazard’s form has been fruitful for a Blues side helmed by new manager Maurizio Sarri.

Manchester City’s all-time top-scorer Aguero got the season underway with a hat-trick against Huddersfield in his second game, and should he avoid picking up another injury, could challenge Hazard for the Golden Boot, an award he last won during the 2014-15 season.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has played his part in Arsenal’s fine start to the season under Unai Emery which saw them take in an impressive run of 11 successive wins.

England captain Kane could be on track to win his third Premier League Golden Boot after missing out on it last season to Salah, and managed to break his August goal-scoring drought earlier this season.

Salah had a disappointing start to the season so far in comparison to last season’s heroics, but has scored in successive Premier League games to suggest he is getting back to his best.

Brighton striker Glenn Murray has emerged as an unlikely Golden Boot striker and scored his 100th goal for the Seagulls against Wolves.

Callum Wilson has scored three goals in his last three games to help Bournemouth’s impressive start to the season which has seen the Eddie Howe’s side climb into the top six.

Mohamed Salah Liverpool Brighton Premier League 13052018

Liverpool striker Salah scored 32 goals last season to win the Premier League Golden Boot, beating previous holder Kane to the top prize.

The Spurs forward missed out on the award narrowly by two goals after clinching it two years in a row, with Aguero coming in third and Jamie Vardy finishing fourth.

You literally made my dreams come true – Schmeichel’s emotional letter to late chairman in full – football news

Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel penned an emotional letter to Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha following confirmation the club’s chairman was killed in Saturday’s helicopter crash outside the King Power Stadium.

Schmeichel arrived at the club shortly after Srivaddhanaprabha had taken up the role of chairman and was part of the side that stunned the sporting world by winning the Premier League in 2015-16.

On Sunday it was confirmed the Thai businessman was one of five people killed in a helicopter crash outside the King Power Stadium following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with West Ham.

Schmeichel was among a number of Leicester players to express their shock and grief on social media following the announcement, penning a considered tribute to the late Srivaddhanaprabha.

The Denmark international wrote: “I cannot believe this is happening. I am totally devastated and heartbroken. I just cannot believe what I saw last night. It just doesn’t seem real!

“It is difficult to put into words how much you have meant to this football club and to the city of Leicester.

“We all know about the investment in the football club you and your family have made. But this is about so much more. You cared so deeply for not just the club but for the entire community.

“Your endless contribution to Leicester’s hospitals and charities will never be forgotten. You went above and beyond in every aspect.

“Never have I ever come across a man like you. So hard working, so dedicated, so passionate, so kind and so generous in the extreme.

“You had time for everyone. You touched everyone. It didn’t matter who it was, you had time for them. I always admired you as a leader, as a father and as a man.

“You changed football. Forever! You gave hope to everyone that the impossible was possible, not just to our fans but to fans all over the world in any sport! Not many people have done that.

“When you signed me back in 2011 you said to me we would be in the Champions League within six years and we would do great things. You inspired me and I believed in you. You made me feel like nothing was impossible.

“Without you and your family, all this, everything we did together, everything we achieved, would never have happened. You gave me experiences that only happen in fantasy.

“You literally made my dreams come true.

“But what I am most proud of is to have been part of your vision. The environment you created.

“This club, this city is a family. And that is all because of you. For this I am eternally grateful.

“I am grateful to have known you and grown close to you and your amazing family and for all the private moments and joint experiences I had with you on a personal level.

“It breaks my heart to know I will never see you in the dressing room when I come in early from my warm-up and have a chat about everything and nothing. That you won’t be there having fun and laughing with the boys and seeing your infectious smile and enthusiasm that rubbed off on everyone you came into contact with.

“We now have a responsibility as a club, as players and fans to honour you.

“From knowing you we do this by being the family you created. By sticking together and supporting those closest to you through [this] horrendous time.

“You had a vision for this club, you wanted the best for us. There was absolutely nothing you wouldn’t do for us.

Article continues below

“You were so passionate. We must honour your legacy by delivering for you on the pitch like you also wanted and continue being the close-knit family club that you built.

“You will never know how much you meant to me and my family.

“I am truly honoured and privileged to have been a small part of your life.”

Legacy of tragic Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha will last forever thanks to Premier League triumph – football news

It is a tragedy that will go down in footballing infamy. The darkest day in Leicester City’s history arrived just two and a half years after the club’s greatest hour.

Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the much-loved owner of the Foxes, ties together both of these moments.

On May 2, 2016, the man affectionately known as just Vichai celebrated football’s most heart-warming fairy tale as Leicester were miraculously crowned Premier League champions.

But on October 27, 2018, Vichai’s fairy tale would descend into a nightmare. On Saturday evening – following the 1-1 draw with West Ham – the helicopter that collects Vichai after every home match at the King Power Stadium tragically crashed just seconds after take-off.

All five people on board died, including the 61-year-old Vichai. It is a disaster that has rocked football to its very core.

Even before the terrible news had been confirmed, a vigil began outside the ground. Thousands of fans left flowers, and also, according to the BBC, a statue of Ganesha. Ganesha is one of the most important figures in the Hindu religion, known as a “remover of obstacles”.

Srivaddhanaprabha certainly removed obstacles during his lifetime. He treated fans with affection and helped all Foxes live the unthinkable in 2015-16. They began that season 5000-1 outsiders with the bookmarkers, but ended the campaign as the best team in the land.

The team coached by Claudio Ranieri – and led by the previously unheralded Jamie Vardy, N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez – captured the hearts of all football fans across the globe.

Leicester City 2016 Premier League champions

But it was Srivaddhanaprabha’s affection for the club – and the club’s affection for him – which ran even deeper. He was an extremely generous man, once laying on free beer, donuts and hot dogs on his own birthday so supporters could celebrate with him.

He also subsidised away travel for fans, capped at £10 per supporter. Two female Foxes interviewed by Sky News after the accident claimed Srivaddhanaprabha had even offered to buy breakfast for the travelling Leicester supporters ahead of next week’s game against Cardiff.

He was similarly generous with the squad; they were each gifted a BMW sports car for winning the title, worth £100,000 each.

This was all a far cry from his humble beginnings; he initially opened a duty-free shop in his native Thailand in 1989 and built it into an empire now known as King Power Duty Free. His big break came when the company won the contract to provide duty free concessions at airports across the country. He was the fifth-richest person in Thailand at the time of his death, estimated to be worth around £3.8 billion ($4.9bn) by Forbes.

Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Claudio Ranieri Premier League trophy

A devout Buddhist, he had Thai monks bless the pitch and gave players amulets before their title success. He loved polo, and was regularly pictured with royal families from across the globe. He also owned Belgian football club OH Leuven.

Srivaddhanaprabha was born Vichai Raksriaksorn, but was bestowed a new surname in 2012 by King Bhumibol, the previous Thai monarch. Srivaddhanaprabha means “light of progressive glory”, and recognised his many contributions towards social responsibility in his homeland – his business ran a number of programmes geared towards tackling education and health issues among children.

He bought Leicester City in 2010 for a fee of £39m while they were still in the Championship, naming his son Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha as his vice-chairman. He pumped millions of his own cash into the club and they were promoted to the Premier League in 2014. After narrowly avoiding relegation in their first season back in the big time, Vichai’s team achieved the seemingly impossible a year later.

Leicester City tributes

Adored throughout the city, in 2014 Srivaddhanaprabha was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Leicester, which recognised his achievements in business in Thailand and his contribution to local sport. A man of few words, Srivaddhanaprabha gave a short speech on stage, addressing the professors and students present.

He said: “It is my great honour, having the chance to stand on this stage today.

“I am so proud to be a part of Leicester City, and I am more proud to be a part of the University of Leicester. I promised to do my best for our Leicester board, to the university, and the football club.”

He did not succeed in just doing his best. In leading underdogs Leicester to Premier League glory, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha became immortal. His legacy will live on forever.

‘Sometimes I just need to kick the ball’ – Pogba admits fault in Everton goal – football news

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has admitted his culpability for the goal that Everton scored in Sunday’s Premier League meeting between the teams.

The France midfielder had scored the opening goal in the game, converting the rebound to his own saved penalty, before Anthony Martial doubled their lead in the second half.

United, though, were made to survive a nervy finish after the Toffees scored a penalty of their own via Gylfi Sigurdsson, but they held out to win 2-1.

Pogba was in part culpable for the concession of the spot-kick, having given possession away under pressure by trying an extravagant flick in a dangerous area.

Speaking after the game, the France international admitted that he was in the wrong and that sometimes he needs to be more pragmatic in his approach.

“I don’t like to kick the ball away, but sometimes you just have to clear the ball and push up the field,” he said. “I always try to improve, I always try to play and find a solution because I think we have the ability to play. But sometimes it’s true that I have to clear the ball and just relieve the pressure on the team.”

Previously, Pogba had drawn criticism for his penalty run up, which saw him approach the ball with a number of stuttering, small steps, before he delivered a kick to Jordan Pickford’s right, which the England goalkeeper stopped.

Manager Jose Mourinho, who has criticised the player in the past this season, on this occasion took to the 25-year-old’s defence, arguing that he likes to see players be brave and stating that he has no interest in “Mickey Mouse” players who shirk responsibility in such situations.

Pogba, meanwhile, admitted he could change his approach.

“For sure I was lucky,” Pogba told Sky Sports. “But the most important thing is the goal went in. It was good for us and good for me.

Article continues below

“I always try to destabilise the goalkeeper and I always shoot like this. That’s how I know to take penalties.

“I might have to start to change it because maybe the goalkeepers start to know my steps.”

United are up to eighth in the table but remain five points off the Champions League spots.

Wembley pitch ‘beat up’ by NFL stars ahead of Tottenham’s clash with Man City – football news

Tottenham and Manchester City may have to deal with a “beat-up” pitch at Wembley on Monday night, according to Philadelphia Eagles kicker Jake Elliott.

Elliott helped the Eagles to a 24-18 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday in an NFL contest that finished a little over 24 hours before Spurs kick off against the reigning Premier League champions City on the same pitch.

There was a noticeably barren strip down the centre of the field once the game had finished and Elliott, who was successful with all three of his extra-point attempts and a 31-yard field goal on Sunday, conceded the surface was far from ideal.

“I’m not gonna lie, it was a little beat up,” he told Omnisport.

“It was a little muddy in the middle. But it was a cool experience to play here.

“It was something that we played around with pre-game and tried to get used to. They definitely were different conditions. You’ve got to make adjustments and try to make the kicks.”

Elliott is used to kicking in NFL-specific stadiums in America and admitted the Wembley turf was below the usual standards he is accustomed to.

“We use those fields once a week and [they are used] just for [American] football,” he added.

“They’re in a little better condition, obviously, just thicker grass, a different type of turf.”

Article continues below

Chris Long, who plays as a defensive end for the reigning Super Bowl-champion Eagles, admitted he also struggled with the ground.

“The pitch was a little wet,” he noted.

“It was muddy and the footing was tough but guys made the adjustments they needed to with the way they were playing.”

‘Giroud needs to score’ – Sarri disappointed for Chelsea striker but happy for Morata & Loftus-Cheek – football news

Maurizio Sarri is happy to have seen Alvaro Morata and Ruben Loftus-Cheek find the back of the net against Burnley but knows Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud also needs to score a goal soon.

Morata and Loftus-Cheek have found the going difficult under Sarri, despite Chelsea’s undefeated start to the Premier League season , with the former struggling for form and the latter for starts.

However, Loftus-Cheek made the most of his chance in the Europa League, scoring a hat-trick against BATE in midweek , and though he did not grab his first Premier League start of the season in the 4-0 win over Burnley, he did add a goal off the bench.

Meanwhile, the heavily-criticised Morata picked up his third goal of the Premier League season to open the scoring, while Ross Barkley and Willian added the other scores for Chelsea, who were without Eden Hazard in the win.

However, Giroud, who came on for Morata in the 74th minute, could not do the same and remains without a goal in all competitions for the Blues this season.

Sarri was left pleased with Morata and Loftus-Cheek after the victory, but admitted that he believed the France international could have found the back of the net as well.

“For 10 minutes it was difficult at the beginning but then we played very well. I am very happy for Alvaro Morata and Loftus-Cheek again,” Sarri told reporters.

“I am disappointed for Giroud because today I thought he could score. He needs to score.

“At the end, everything is OK. We played very well in full control of the match for the last 80 minutes.”

Sarri spoke further on Morata, who he admitted probably could have added another goal to his tally, but hopes that his recent performances can be a springboard toward something greater.

“I think that Alvaro today played well,” Sarri said. “He went to the ball when it was necessary. I think he played a very good game. He probably could have scored more as he had three or four opportunities, but he scored a good goal.

“I think the last three or four matches can be a good start for him.”

The win moves Chelsea up to second in the Premier League table ahead of Manchester City’s match against Tottenham on Monday, but the next challenge for the Blues will come on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup against former Blues star Frank Lampard’s Derby County side.

Derby already have claimed a big name in the competition, knocking out Manchester United on penalties in the last round, while Chelsea got past Liverpool thanks to a late Eden Hazard goal.

And Sarri is already turning his focus toward that midweek cup clash, noting he expects a real challenge for Chelsea to advance to the next round.

“At the moment we have to start to think about the next match,” Sarri added. “We play on Wednesday and we have a difficult game, we want to go on in the competition.”

Shaqiri loving Liverpool life after finding his spark under Klopp – football news

Xherdan Shaqiri says it is “nice” to be at Liverpool, with the Swiss star chasing down major silverware after proving his worth under Jurgen Klopp.

Despite being an established international and boasting spells at the likes of Inter and Bayern Munich on an impressive CV, the 27-year-old was considered to be a squad addition when snapped up from Stoke over the summer.

With Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane established at Anfield as a fearsome front three, attacking berths were expected to be hard to come by.

Shaqiri has, however, made a telling contribution when called upon, with a first goal for the Reds recorded off the bench during a 4-1 victory over Cardiff.

He is enjoying his time on Merseyside, with a useful asset for Klopp telling Liverpool’s official website: “It’s nice to be here.

“We have a very good team and we want to be successful. When we play like this we can be successful.

“Our goal has to be to be successful. We are in a good way but we have to keep going, it’s just the beginning of the season and we have a lot of games to come. We are in a good way.”

While Liverpool proved too strong for Cardiff in their latest outing, they did allow the Bluebirds to take hope from a Callum Paterson strike before Shaqiri and Mane put the result beyond doubt late on.

“The defenders will be disappointed that we conceded a goal – but that is football. We cannot play all the time scoring five or six goals and not conceding,” said Shaqiri.

“Every team concedes some goals. But, defensively we are still very good and stay very strong at the back. I’m confident we’re going to keep going like this.”

Liverpool will be hoping to keep the back door bolted in their next fixture, with a crunch clash with Arsenal set to see them pay a visit to Emirates Stadium next Saturday.
