Malaysia’s injury woes worsen – now Davies is injured – football news

BY        ZULHILMI ZAINAL       Follow on Twitter

On Tuesday, Malaysia are set to face Kyrgyz Republic, who are ranked 80 places above them in the FIFA rankings, in a friendly match.

But things have not gone head coach Tan Cheng Hoe’s way, in terms of player availability. Akram Mahinan, Rawilson Batuil and Nor Hakim Isa were injured for their friendly match against Sri Lanka on Friday, while Shahrel Fikri Fauzi were later “seriously injured” in the 4-1 win.

Now Tan is set to be without right back Matthew Davies as well, on Tuesday. He revealed in the pre-match press conference on Monday that the Pahang captain had been injured one day earlier.

“Davies hurt his knee in training yesterday, on top of the earlier injuries to the four players. But the rest are fine.

“I don’t have any plans to call up any replacement players for tomorrow’s match, as there’s only one day left and there’s not much time left,” he told the press in Melaka.

Despite this disadvantage, Tan is determined that his team does not play too defensively against the visitors, who have qualified for the 2019 Asian Cup.

“My men have improved over the past three, four matches, but there are still aspects of our game that we need to improve on, while cutting down on mistakes such as conceding first.

“Tomorrow we need to play to our strengths we need to attack and defend well. Although we are facing a better-ranked team, the coaching staff are confident of earning a positive result as we are playing at home and will be backed by the home supporters,” remarked the former Kedah boss.

The match will be held at the Hang Jebat Stadium, and kick off at 8.45 pm Malaysian time.

Safawi takes JDT into closer to retaining Malaysia Cup – football news

At Tan Sri Dato Hj Hassan Yunos Stadium, JDT started like a house on fire and stormed into an early lead in the match when Safawi Rasid latched onto Hazwan Bakri’s pass to curled a shot beyond Helmi Eliza to put the home side into the lead before a full minute has even been played. The Pahang keeper completely misjudged the path of the ball as he put his team under early presure.

The early goal meant that JDT also took the lead in the tie since the first leg ended 1-1. Despite missing star striker Fernando Marquez, JDT were still dominating the chances created and Hazwan himself was unlucky not to add to the score when his shot found the crossbar rather than the back of the net.

In the second half, JDT made progression to the semi-final stage safe and sound when Fernando Elizari put in a through ball for the impressive Safawi to nip in to score his and his team’s second goal of the night. With the 3-1 aggregate score, JDT will now play Terengganu FC in the next stage of the Malaysia Cup.

Over in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah did the minimum required of them as they edged out Kelantan to be the third team to book them place in the last four. Trailing 1-2 from the first leg, Sabah found their all-important home goal from the penalty spot as Rodoljub Paunovic struck home the winner in the 31st minute.

The goal meant that the aggregate was tied at 2-2 but Sabah go through by virtue of them having the away goal scored in Kota Bahru last week. The Rhinos are in the semi-final of the Malaysia Cup for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

They will now await the winners from the final quarterfinal clash remaining which is PKNS versus Perak where both sides are still very much in the tie having drawn the first leg 0-0.

Safuwan’s late goal gives Pahang hope – football news

It’s all square between Pahang and Johor Darul Ta’zim after the completion of the first leg of the 2018 Malaysia Cup quarterfinal at Darul Makmur Stadium on Sunday. The 1-1 draw gives JDT a slight advantage heading into the return leg this weekend, as they have a vital away goal in their favour.

As expected, Hazwan Bakri made his way into the starting line-up in place of the injured Fernando Marquez and the former played a pivotal role in the creation of the opening goal of the match. Laying off a pass perfectly onto the path of Gonzalo Cabrera, Hazwan set up his compatriot to slam home from the edge of the box.

Pahang tried to make a comeback and many a times, forced Farizal Marlias to come off his line as The Elephants continually break through JDT’s defence that saw the return of Marcos Antonio into the mix.

The equaliser for the home team finally came in deep into added time in the second half when Muslim Ahmad’s lofted an outstanding pass for Safuwan Baharudin to nod in between Farizal and Aidil Zafuan.

After the match, JDT’s manager Luciano Figueroa was understandably frustrated with the concession of the late goal but is still picking the positives from the match, particularly with the crucial away goal that Cabrera scored early in the second half.

“Pahang managed to score in the 92nd minute. It was definitely not a good thing for us. We are not happy with the goal. However we must remember and be focused that we still have one more important match at home.”

“What I can say is that it was quite a difficult match. We made a mistake in the final minutes that gave the opportunity to the opponents to score the goal. Yet we still managed to bring home an away goal.

“We will also try to fix all the mistakes we made and try to win the match at Larkin on 29 September. With the amount of time we have, I hope we can fix all of it and advance to the semi-finals,” said Figueora after the match.

The second leg between the two teams will be played on Saturday 29 September at Tan Sri Dato Hj Hassan Yunos Stadium where Pahang came away with a 0-3 win the last they met in a cup knockout match.

20 minutes into the AFC U-16 Championship match between hosts Malaysia and Thailand, the home fans are still queuing up for match tickets. Luckily, Malaysian FA sec-gen Stuart Ramalingam, NFDP CEO Safirul Bakar and youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman arrived and instructed that the supporters be let in for free immediately.

JDT provide update on Fernando Marquez injury – football news

Marquez will have to undergo surgery after the heavy injury he picked up in the Malaysia Cup group stage match for Johor Darul Ta’zim against MIFA on Sunday. The Argentine suffered a serious head injury in the clash that led to JDT’s first goal and was immediately taken to the hospital.

The striker could be seen laying on the ground motionless after the clash and that sparked chaos all over the pitch as medical staffs were rushed onto the pitch to attend to him. Minutes later Marquez was helped to his feet and onto the ambulance with his face and attire covered in blood.

JDT have released an update on his situation with cuts above his eye and now he will be required to go into surgery to fix fractures in his face. The collision happened as Marquez was jumping to head the ball that was pumped in from the wings.

Fernando Marquez has successfully underwent surgery at KPJ Shah Alam after suffering multiple injuries in Johor Darul Ta’zim FC’s unifi Piala Malaysia 3-0 win over MIFA on Sunday. We regret to announce that Marquez has had eight stitches below his eyebrow immediately upon arriving at the hospital on Sunday and required further surgery on Monday due to extensive fractures in several parts of his face after being elbowed in the said match. Marquez will be under hospital observation for a few days before returning to Johor. Marquez has been ruled out for several weeks and will require a face protection mask when he returns to football.

That means that Marquez will miss the upcoming quarterfinal encounter against Pahang and will need several weeks of healing. But if JDT can make it all the way to the final, their fans may yet not have seen the last of Marquez in action.

Malaysia Cup round-up: Quarter-finalists confirmed save for stubborn Group C – football news

BY        ZULHILMI ZAINAL       Follow on Twitter

The penultimate round of the 2018 Malaysia Cup group stage was played over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and six teams have booked their places in the knockout stage.

Group A

Perak will follow Terengganu FC into the next stage, when the former beat the latter 2-1 in Kuala Terengganu. Gilmar da Silva opened the scoring for the visitors in the 21st minute, and the hosts were made to wait until the 65th minute for the equaliser, an Ashari Samsudin half-volley from inside the box. But Gilmar found the winner three minutes from time, to take the Bos Gaurus through to the quarter-finals.

Terengganu-Perak match highlights

Despite a 4-3 away win over Kuala Lumpur, Felcra FC‘s chances of qualifying have evaporated. The Rivals goals were scored by Aziz Rahim (20′, 43′ p.), Nazrul Kamaruzaman (68′) and David Laly (83′), while the hosts’ goals came from Gilherme de Paula’s goals (60′, 82′ p.), and Zainudin Abidin’s 74th minute own goal.

KL-Felcra match highlights

Standings: Terengganu (10) Perak (10) Felcra (5) Kuala Lumpur (3)

Group B

Felda United booked their knockout stage slot with a 2-0 win over PDRM at home. Their goals were scored by Thiago Fernandes in the 66th minute, and Gilberto Fortunato in injury time.

Felda-PDRM match highlights

PKNS FC advanced at the expense of Melaka United, after defeating the Mousedeers 2-1 in Shah Alam. Romel Morales opened the scoring for the hosts in the 23rd minute, before in-form Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim equalised in the 54th minute. Rafael Ramazotti netted the winner in the 66th minute, heading in a corner kick.

PKNS-Melaka match highlights

Standings: Felda (10) PKNS (10) Melaka (6) PDRM (1)

Group C

Group C remains the only group without a confirmed quarter-finalists, and even its last-placed team still keeps a mathematical chance of reaching the knockout stage. Group leaders MISC-MIFA, playing without their suspended foreign stars L’Imam Seydi and Kpah Sherman, were held to a goalless draw against Kelantan in Kota Bharu.

Kelantan-MIFA match highlights

Kedah meanwhile continued their resurgence, by defeating defending champions JDT 3-1 at home. The hosts needed only six minutes to open the scoring, thanks to Sandro da Silva’s goal, but Fernando Marquez equalised for the visitors thirty minutes later. A defensive mix-up in the JDT defence then allowed Akhyar Rashid to give the Red Eagles the lead again two minutes into the second half. JDT centre back Marcos Antonio was sent off for a second booking one minute before the end, and Liridon Krasniqi sealed the win with a wonderful curling goal deep in injury time.

Kedah-JDT match highlights

Standings: MIFA (8) Kedah (8), JDT (6) Kelantan (5)

Group D

Needing a win to confirm their quarter-final slot, Pahang instead lost 3-1 at home to ten-man Selangor, who were already unable to advance. A defensive error allowed Rufino Segovia to open the scoring for the visitors in the seventh minute, but they were down to ten men in 28th minute after defender Ashmawi Yakin was shown a straight red for a desperate foul on Mohamadou Sumareh right outside the penalty area. The ensuing free kick was brilliantly put away by Safuwan Baharudin. But another defensive mix-up allowed the Red Giants to go in front again, this time through Willian Pacheco’s 48th minute goal. Deep in injury time, Pahang’s misery was compounded when Sarkunan Krishnansamy pounced on a rebound to score their third goal of the night.

Pahang-Selangor match highlights

Luckily for the Elephants, the result of the other match in the group favoured them. Underdogs Sabah, whose qualification was secured by Pahang’s defeat, returned the favour by edging PKNP FC 2-0 at the Pulau Pinang State Stadium. Goals by Rodoljub Paunovic (31′) and Hector Ramos (81′) secured the Rhinos’ knockout stage slot and also top spot in the group.

PKNP-Sabah match highlights

Standings: Sabah (13) Pahang (8) PKNP (4) Selangor (3)
