‘Hazard is truly out of this world’ – De Ligt blown away by Belgium star – football news

Netherlands defender Matthijs de Ligt described Eden Hazard as “out of this world” after facing the Belgium star in a friendly on Tuesday.

Ronald Koeman’s men held Belgium to a 1-1 draw in Brussels after Arnaut Groeneveld cancelled out Dries Mertens’ opener in the first half.

The highly rated De Ligt, 19, played the first half – like Hazard – and was impressed by the Chelsea attacker.

“I obviously knew about the size of [Romelu] Lukaku,” the Ajax defender said.

“And Hazard is truly out of this world. It’s been some night for me.”

De Ligt came through the youth system at Ajax and has been linked to the likes of Manchester City and United and Barcelona among other clubs.

The teenager enjoyed the opportunity to face some of the world’s best, saying: “It was fantastic.

“You start playing football for games like these. Strikers like Lukaku, wingers like Hazard, it’s great to face them on the pitch.”

De Ligt has made 11 international appearances, but dismissed suggestions he was already a certain starter for Netherlands.

“I wouldn’t say irreplaceable, but I have played many games recently,” he said.

“That was one of my goals, but to be irreplaceable, you have to play really consistently over a longer period of time.”

Monaco the natural move for Henry – Martinez – football news

Thierry Henry starting his career as a head coach at Monaco was the “natural move” he had been waiting for, according to Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.

Former France and Arsenal star Henry began his playing career at Monaco and was announced as the successor to Leonardo Jardim on Saturday, signing a three-year contract.

The 41-year-old, who oversaw his first training session on Monday, had been working under Martinez with Belgium since August 2016 and the Spaniard backed his former number two to be a success at a club that means so much to him.

On Henry’s departure, Martinez told a news conference: “I don’t think it’s a loss. The initial project was to have Thierry’s experience preparing the group for the World Cup and we achieved that.

“After that it’s been great for Thierry to want to be with the national team until the natural move would appear. It wasn’t a case of leaving for the sake of it or trying to force a move.

“We’re all supportive because Monaco is his home, it’s where he started as a player and it’s a natural way to start his coaching career.

“He will be a top coach, there’s no two doubts about it; his obsession for the game, his experience, his know-how, but then we all hope he gets a bit of luck because you always need luck in football.”

Belgium take on Netherlands in a friendly on Tuesday and Martinez detailed plans to use a variety of players, while also disclosing that Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet could start.

Article continues below

Appointing a replacement for Henry is on the Spaniard’s agenda, something he hopes to have sewn up ahead of the next set of internationals in November.

“I think we need an extra body on the staff. The technical staff is very strong, we’ve been working now for a long time, but it’s important – maybe not for a short camp – but when you’re going into a big tournament that we need that extra body, but we’re going to take our time,” he said.

“It’s more assessing what the group needs – they aren’t the needs that were needed two years ago and we didn’t have the experience that we had in the World Cup. We will be adding someone for November.”

Wijnaldum not interested in Netherlands comparisons – football news

Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum had no interest in comparing his team to others after their comfortable win over Germany on Saturday.

Virgil van Dijk, Memphis Depay and Wijnaldum scored as Ronald Koeman’s men claimed a 3-0 Nations League win in Amsterdam.

It marked Netherlands’ first ever win by three or more goals against Germany, whose recent struggles continued.

But Wijnaldum was unwilling to compare his team – who failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup – to the likes of Germany and France.

“I don’t know where we are. We shouldn’t look at other teams,” the Liverpool midfielder said.

“We focus on our next games. After that, we can say where we are. We have to give our everything to make sure we try to do our best.

“It’s not good to say, ‘Oh we’re on this level’.”

Steven Bergwijn, Denzel Dumfries and Arnaut Groeneveld made their debuts for Netherlands.

Wijnaldum was full of praise for the trio, saying they had shown they belong at international level.

“Because of some injuries we had to play with youngsters who were making their debut. They played a very good game,” he said.

Article continues below

“Those three showed some guts, and that they are able to reach the level of the Dutch team. Because of them we were able to get this good result.”

Netherlands’ next outing is a friendly meeting with Belgium on Tuesday.

Germany boss Low not interested in Ballack rebuke – football news

Joachim Low refused to be drawn into a war of words with Michael Ballack as he insisted he felt no undue pressure in Germany’s top job.

Speaking to Deutsche Welle on Thursday, decorated former national team captain Ballack expressed surprise that Low remained head coach in the wake of the World Cup debacle.

Germany’s defence of their 2014 crown ended in the ignominy of a first group-stage exit since 1938, but the German Football Association (DFB) stuck by the long-serving 58-year-old after extending his contract in May.

Low brushed off Ballack’s criticism and claimed to be under no more scrutiny than usual.

“I saw the headline, people can say what they want, but I’m really not interested,” the Die Mannschaft boss told reporters.

“This week I have other thoughts in my head and next week even more.

“I’ve been [in the job] since 2006. I do not feel more pressure than at the 2006 World Cup, the 2010 or 2014 World Cup. Why should I?”

Low is presently focused on planning for the Nations League meeting with Netherlands in Amsterdam on Saturday.

Thomas Muller will start despite Bayern Munich’s poor form, while Matthias Ginter is set to hold his spot at right-back as Joshua Kimmich continues in midfield.

Low commended Netherlands’ improvement since failing to qualify for Russia 2018, but cheekily rejected comparisons between the two countries.

“I do not see any parallels, because we have always qualified for every tournament,” he said.

Article continues below

“Netherlands against Germany always has a touch of healthy rivalry. The Dutch have dragged themselves through their problems and have been getting good results of late.

“I think they are on a similar level.”

Germany visit world champions France, with whom they drew 0-0 in a September friendly, three days after the Netherlands clash.

‘I’ll only return to coaching for top job’ – Klinsmann reveals he turned down several opportunities following USMNT departure – football news

Jurgen Klinsmann says he turned down several job opportunities ahead of the 2018 World Cup as he waits for a more high-profile role.

The German-born manager departed the U.S. national team in 2016 following a five-year stint and has been out of management since.

Klinsmann won the 2013 Gold Cup while in charge of the U.S. while leading the team to a Round of 16 spot in Brazil.

Klinsmann was replaced by Bruce Arena, whose U.S. team fell to Trinidad & Tobago on the final day of qualifying to miss the World Cup.

Having watched from afar, Klinsmann is willing to get back into coaching, but only if the right opportunity were to arise.

“Ahead of the World Cup in Russia, I had four or five inquiries from teams playing there,” Klinsmann told Sport Bild. “But I turned them down because their goal was to survive the group stages.

“I had this goal with the U.S. (at the 2014 World Cup). It’s not enough for me now.

“If (I return), I want to lead an association of a certain calibre and with the goal to reach the semifinals at the World Cup.

“But if such a situation does not come to pass in the foreseeable future, I wouldn’t mind it for family reasons. My daughter Laila still attends school. And when she attends university next year, the situation changes.”

Article continues below

Prior to managing the U.S., Klinsmann took charge of Germany from 2006-8, finishing third at the 2006 World Cup.

He then moved on to a role with Bayern Munich, where he remained less than one year before being sacked.

Following Germany’s World Cup failure, Klinsmann says that that Joachim Low must reach the semifinals of Euro 2020 in order to save his job.

Koeman tells Netherlands to be inspired by Ajax holding Bayern – football news

Netherlands can take inspiration from Ajax drawing against Bayern Munich in the Champions League ahead of their clash with Germany, says coach Ronald Koeman.

Having lost their Nations League opener 2-1 against World Cup winners France, Koeman’s men will hope for a better result when they host Germany on Saturday in League A Group 1.

And Koeman feels his team should note the success Dutch club Ajax had away to Bayern in the Champions League last week, earning a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena.

“We have to respect the opponents but we also have to believe in ourselves,” Koeman said.

“We are not so bad and the others aren’t so good.

“We have to believe in our qualities, just like Ajax in the Champions League against Bayern.

“If you have the feeling you can compete with them slowly the confidence grows. The Dutch national team is in the same process right now.”

Netherlands have won two, drawn two and lost two of Koeman’s six matches in charge since taking over in February, but the former Everton manager accepts his side remain in transition after their failure to qualify for Russia 2018.

“The players thought it was a bad World Cup qualifying campaign as well. They needed to make some changes,” Koeman added.

Article continues below

“There were also players not selected while others thought they should have join the squad. At this time we’re also making changes. We’re recovering now.

“In my opinion, it’s not a great period for the national team. We’re used to fighting for trophies. On the other hand, we still have players who play for big clubs.

“We have enough quality but it’s not going to be an easy win for us against Germany. We have to play at our best against them, but I also think that Germany have known better times in football.”

‘Giroud is unjustly criticised’ – Deschamps hails striker after ending drought – football news

Didier Deschamps hailed Olivier Giroud for ending his international goal drought and securing a 2-1 Nations League win for France over Netherlands.

Giroud went through the entirety of Les Bleus’ triumphant 2018 World Cup campaign without finding the net but the Chelsea striker was on hand to net a 74th-minute winner in Paris after Ryan Babel cancelled out Kylian Mbappe’s early opener on Sunday.

The 31-year-old Giroud is now France’s fourth-highest scorer in history, with 32 to his name, and Deschamps warmly praised a selfless performer.

“I am very happy for Olivier Giroud,” the head coach told M6 .

“He’s very helpful for us and he’s given us the win. He’s often unjustly criticised.

“He’s very important to the team. We need him.”

Article continues below

Giroud’s volley from Benjamin Mendy’s cross meant the Stade de France could enjoy the post-match World Cup celebration party with greater gusto.

“There’s a great atmosphere and it’s going to continue,” Deschamps added.

“It was the first game at Stade de France after the World Cup. Having this communion with all the people present, we had to do it [win] and we will enjoy it.”

September 2018 international break: Every match, kick-off times & competition details – football news

Following a month of World Cup action over the summer, the first international break of the 2018-19 season has arrived.

Premier League and Ligue 1 teams have so far played out four fixtures each, La Liga and Serie A three, while the new Bundesliga campaign is only two games in as we head into a 10-day rest period.

The 2018 September break sees the introduction of the new, bi-yearly UEFA Nations League, where 55 teams are split into four leagues (A-D), each consisting of four groups.

The winners of Group B, C and D will win promotion, while those who finish bottom of Groups A, B and C will be relegated. Then, in June 2019, the four league winners of Group A will contest the semi-finals, a third-place play-off and a final for the title of Nations League champions.

The England national team will meet for the first time since their World Cup semi-final run at the Russia World Cup ahead of their opener against Spain at Wembley on Saturday, before travelling to face Switzerland in a friendly on Tuesday.

And while manager Gareth Southgate has explained the tournament format to his Three Lions squad, not all of them are yet familiar with the system.

“It is quite confusing – I don’t know what you guys think of it?” said Harry Maguire when asked for his opinion of the new concept. “The boss tried to explain it to us the best he could the other day. I think he has got his head around it now, but it took a lot of studying.

“It is confusing, but we are trying to get our heads round it. For us players, we just go into each game trying to win it and see where it takes us. So we will see after the game.”

Article continues below

There are also a host of friendlies across the international break, as well as the second round of fixtures from the African Cup of Nations qualifying.

Goal runs through a day-by-day guide of which games are being played before the return of domestic football next weekend.
