Liverpool Team News: Injuries, suspensions and line-up vs Cardiff – football news

Liverpool can steal a march on Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table this weekend as they host Cardiff City at Anfield.

With Pep Guardiola’s men not in action until Monday, and facing a testing trip to Tottenham, the Reds can open up a three-point advantage with a victory over Neil Warnock’s struggling Bluebirds.

Jurgen Klopp’s men looked back to something like their best in midweek, swatting aside Red Star Belgrade 4-0 in the Champions League, and they will be looking to make it 10 Premier League games unbeaten at the start of what promises to be a thrilling campaign.

Here, GBP Sports takes a look at everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s game…

Liverpool Injuries

Liverpool are without captain Jordan Henderson, who suffered a hamstring injury at Huddersfield last weekend.

Naby Keita is another doubt, also with a hamstring issue, while the Reds are without long-term absentee Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Otherwise, it looks like a clean bill of health for Klopp, who made four changes to his line-up for the game with Red Star.

Liverpool Suspensions

Liverpool do not have any suspended players for this game.

Likely Liverpool Starting Line-Up

It is easy to make the case for a ‘same again’ approach from Klopp.

Liverpool changed their system slightly for Wednesday’s game with Red Star, going with a ‘double 6’ in Gini Wijnaldum and Fabinho, and Roberto Firmino operating behind Mohamed Salah in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

It worked, though against modest opposition.

The performance of Fabinho, and that of Xherdan Shaqiri from the right, makes a compelling case for the two to be included again, while Joe Gomez’s imperious form at centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk is hard to ignore.

Cardiff City Team News

Cardiff are without suspended midfielder Joe Ralls, who is serving a three-game ban after his red card at Tottenham.

The Welshmen also have injury concers, with Lee Peltier (shoulder) and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (knee) ruled out and Danny Ward, Aron Gunnarsson and Gary Madine all doubtful.

Having beaten Fulham last time out, Warnock will hope his side have picked up some momentum after their difficult start to the campaign.

TV Channel & Kick-Off Time

The fixture will not be broadcast live on UK TV this weekend, as it kicks off at 3pm BST. In the United States the game can be watched live on television on NBC Sports, kick off 10am ET.

‘I’m not going to be like Gerrard’ – Keita not aiming to replicate the Liverpool legend – football news

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita will not try to emulate club legend Steven Gerrard but will instead attempt to carve his own legacy at Anfield.

The 23-year-old moved from RB Leipzig in the summer for £53 million ($69m) and inherited the No.8 shirt once donned by Gerrard, who led the Reds to Champions League success in 2005, but unworn since he left the club in 2015.

While Keita has an appetite for success, he says that it is more important to be himself than trying to match one of the greatest players in the Reds’ illustrious history.

“You see the No.8 is really legendary and to wear this shirt now it is legendary,” he said. “It used to belong to a player who was a legend, who was respected here.

“When I was a child, that really was in my mind, to play for a great club like Liverpool. Well, here I am now, I don’t mean I’m not going to be like him because each of us are individuals.

“He left his own mark, I want to leave my own mark, I am going to work really hard to leave my own mark like he did. To play for Liverpool, that is a dream I had as a child and here I am now.”

Keita has made a positive start to life on Merseyside, earning the trust of manager Jurgen Klopp quicker than fellow summer arrival Fabinho.

However, he still has steps to go as he continues to integrate to daily life.

“I am really motivated to speak English, it is really important for me. I am following a course,” he said. “I want to be able to speak to the coach, I want to speak to the other players on the team and I am really working hard.

“I am hoping in six months I will be able to do these interviews in English.”

And, once he has mastered English, he has set his sights on the local dialect.

“I find the scouse accent a bit difficult but I will try my best to learn some,” he said. “I do not know any scouse, I have been trying to speak English, I have not been able to learn any scouse yet.”

Keita out for Liverpool as Klopp waits on Mane fitness – football news

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed Naby Keita is likely to miss the trip to Huddersfield Town but left the door open for Sadio Mane to feature on Saturday.

Keita picked up a hamstring issue while playing for Guinea as Liverpool’s injury problems piled up during the international break.

Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk overcame their fitness issues to train on Thursday, although forward Mane was absent after undergoing hand surgery.

Klopp is yet to decide whether the 26-year-old forward will be involved against Huddersfield, who are yet to register a win in the Premier League this season.

“A few of the boys trained and we have to see how they react,” the Reds boss told the media.

“The only thing that’s pretty sure is that Naby will not be available. With all the rest, we have to see how it develops.”

Netherlands international Van Dijk could come in for close attention from Huddersfield following Ronald Koeman’s revelation the defender has been carrying two broken ribs.

Klopp, however, removed any doubt over the key centre-back’s readiness for the contest.

“You saw when he went off against Southampton [that something was wrong]. Virgil would not leave the pitch without major problems,” the German said.

“I would say it has healed pretty quickly. Footballers very often have to play with some kind of pain. He has no problems with that anymore.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Fabinho is close to a Premier League debut having surprisingly been overlooked since his arrival from Monaco.

“There’s only one reason [he has not played] – because other players fit better in the moment,” Klopp added. “I really think about who plays in each position. It will always take time for a new player to close the gap.”

‘Premier League is tough,’ admits Liverpool’s Naby Keita – football news

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita has admitted that the ‘Premier League is tough’.

The 23-year-old joined the Reds in the summer from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and has made four league appearances – three from the start – helping Jurgen Klopp’s men maintain a 100 percent start to the season.

Having played in France, Austria and Germany, Keita opines that playing in the English top-flight is a difficult and different challenge.

“I think it’s fair to say that the Premier League is a tough league,” Keita told club website.

“I’m very motivated to be playing in it – it’s an attractive proposition – but I’ve been told by many people that a lot of overseas players come into the Premier League and they take time to integrate, depending on the circumstances.

Article continues below

“So playing in the Premier League can be difficult, but I am very motivated to play here, not just for myself and my teammates, but for the club.

“Everybody around me has been very supportive towards me so I am certainly giving everything I can to get settled into the team quickly.”

On Saturday, Keita will hope to be restored to the starting lineup as Liverpool take on Tottenham Hotspur in their next league game at Wembley Stadium on Saturday .
