Guardiola confirms Man City are working on new Sane deal – football news

Pep Guardiola says the club is looking to sign Leroy Sane to a new contract in the near future.

The German international provided 10 goals and 15 assists in 32 Premier League appearances last season, winning the league’s Young Player of the Year award while proving a vital part of Manchester City’s title run.

However, recent months have brought their share of low points as Sane was left out of Germany’s World Cup roster before being criticized by team-mate Toni Kroos.

The 22-year-old winger missed the club’s first four matches but has scored in a recent clash with Fulham before coming off the bench in Man City’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool.

“The club are working on that (a new contract), yes,” Guardiola said.

“We value the quality of the player – the human being, the relationship with club, how settled he is, many things… that is what is important. Not whether they have played well in one or two games.

“Ups and downs, moments where you are better than other ones – that is normal. You help them in those moments. Help them understand how consistency is important for their careers and to become a better player then, after that, we will see.

Article continues below

“Sometimes we need one type of game, sometimes another – quicker, more counter. More control, less control.

“But there are no doubts about the quality of Leroy.”

Manchester City are back in action against Burnley on Saturday.

De Bruyne ready for Man City return – Guardiola – football news

Kevin De Bruyne is in contention to make his return to Manchester City’s starting line-up against Burnley, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

The Belgium midfielder has been sidelined with a knee injury sustained in August but returned to training ahead of City’s goalless draw against Liverpool before the international break.

De Bruyne is now in line to face the Clarets at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, although Guardiola warned he may not be able to play the full 90 minutes.

“Yep [De Bruyne is ready],” Guardiola told a news conference ahead of the Premier League fixture.

“I don’t know if he is able to play 90 minutes. He’s trained well the last two weeks.

“He’s such an important player for us. Whenever a player is out, I like it when they come back – we will be stronger.”

Article continues below

There was mixed news elsewhere on the injury front for Guardiola, though, with Fabian Delph available again but Ilkay Gundogan still at least a couple of weeks away from making a comeback after being forced off during City’s Champions League win over Hoffenheim.

“Gundogan is not fit and able, Fabian is back in contention,” the Spaniard added.

“I don’t know two or three weeks [for Gundogan], I don’t know exactly.”

De Bruyne and Hazard the Premier League’s best – Gudmundsson – football news

Kevin De Bruyne could return to start for Manchester City against Burnley on Saturday and Johann Berg Gudmundsson believes that his rival is in the top two players in the league, along with Eden Hazard.

Man City are top of the Premier League despite being without De Bruyne since August due to a knee injury, but the Belgian has trained with his club throughout the international break.

De Bruyne topped the assists chart with 16 last season, but in his absence, Gudmundsson has emerged as the joint-top assist provider with four for Burnley in the league. The in-form Iceland midfielder scored against City last season at Turf Moor and hopes his side can once again shock the champions of England.

“It was a big moment for me [to score that goal] because City at that moment, and probably still are, the best team in England,” Gudmundsson told GBP Sports . “It was a nice moment and hopefully we can do similar things in the next game. We know it will be tough because the quality in their side is unbelievable.

“Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard are up there as the top players who I enjoy to watch in the Premier League. At left-back, I thought Alonso was quite tough because he goes up and down all time, he is difficult to track. I haven’t yet played against [Benjamin] Mendy but he looks like a really good player.”

Meanwhile, Gudmundsson is beginning to get highlighted by Sean Dyche and a host of pundits for his outstanding creative performances at the Lancashire club.

The 27-year-old thinks that Dyche has gotten more out of him than any other manager so far, which is some praise considering that he has played under Louis van Gaal, Ronald Koeman and Dick Advocaat.

“I’ve been playing really well and I have obviously set up a few goals,” said the man with five assists and a goal to his name in all competitions. “My game at the moment is in a good place and it is nice when people pick it up and talk about. It is still early days and only a few games in. I want to keep this up for the whole season to get more goals and assists.

“Up until now, I am happy with how things are going but I want to keep it up throughout the season. It is just experience and at the moment I am enjoying football. My body is fine, I have no injuries and nothing to worry about.

“It is the team that I am in at the moment. I work well with them, I know what they expect from me and everything at the moment is in a good place, both on and off the field. I think Sean Dyche is definitely the manager who has given me the most. He gave me confidence, he made me believe that I am an established Premier League player.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson

“His training methods are good and he will be honest with you. He tells you exactly what he wants from you so I think he is definitely the manager who has got the most out of me and I hope he can get even more out of me this season.

“It has shown with Burnley over the last few seasons now in how well he has done with one of the smallest budgets in the Premier League. The Dutch coaches helped me a lot as well, but I have to say Sean Dyche has been my best coach because I am playing my best football yet under him at the moment.

“I am extremely happy at Burnley at the moment. I signed a new contract and I am looking forward to carrying on doing well.

“I always wanted to play in England. I went to Charlton first in the Championship and worked my way up. I always wanted to play in the Premier League.

“In Iceland, it is the biggest league and the one you follow. That was always my aim and I am extremely proud that I am able to say I am a Premier League player.”

Johann Berg Gudmundsson GFX

Gudmundsson now lives in Manchester himself, with the city being in close proximity to Burnley. The winger’s assists from the right have drawn comparisons to those of David Beckham and he said the former Manchester United star was the player that he grew up admiring the most, with the Old Trafford outfit dominating the Premier League in his youth.

“In world football, I followed David Beckham in England. I watched the Premier League and English national team and he was the standout character there,” he continued. “I had a few idols. Obviously, for people here in Iceland, Eidur Gudjohnsen was definitely one of them.

“He was a fantastic player and I was lucky enough to play with him as well. He was obviously in our Euro 2016 squad as well. He was one of the players in Iceland who I definitely looked up.”

Gudmundsson’s career path was an unusual one. His parents got work in London and he moved with them and joined Chelsea’s academy before moving to Fulham’s facility nearby.

He suffered his biggest career setback at Fulham with an injury to his cruciate ligament coming ahead of the west London club’s decision on who to offer scholarships to. Gudmundsson made the move back to Iceland with Breidablik, before joining AZ and Charlton on his journey to the Premier League.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson GFX

He now believes that this moment gave him the work ethic to ensure he made his dream become a reality.

“My parents lived in London for work. That’s why I went to Chelsea and Fulham,” he concluded. “When I was at Fulham I tore my anterior cruciate ligament in my knee. I had an operation and after that I didn’t get offered a scholarship.

Article continues below

“My family decided to move back to Iceland. I started playing football with my friends again. I played one season in the top league in Iceland and then AZ came in and bought me from Iceland. It was a good experience though, to be in England.

“It was definitely difficult but at the same time it spurred me onto better things because I always wanted to be a professional footballer. Setbacks are not ideal, but they can give you some extra motivation to get you to your goal and that definitely happened for me.

“In the end it all worked out fine for me. If I hadn’t done my ligament, what would have happened? I don’t know. That’s just football and injuries are something you have to get used to.”

Dyche slams ’embarrassing’ Depoitre for diving incident – football news

Burnley manager Sean Dyche hit out at Laurent Depoitre after the Huddersfield Town forward was booked for diving in their 1-1 draw.

Sam Vokes’ first-half goal was cancelled out by Christopher Schindler at Turf Moor on Saturday, leaving Huddersfield winless and Burnley five points clear of the relegation zone in the Premier League.

But Dyche was unhappy with Depoitre, who was shown a yellow card for diving just before the hour-mark.

“It won’t make a difference by showing a yellow card. He could do it again next week,” he said.

“That’s embarrassing, absolutely so. Anyone in pro sport at all – I just can’t work it out, we’re not talking gamesmanship or cleverness or someone clipping you and then they go down.

“We’re talking blatant dives and today was cringeworthy, but no-one wants to do something about it. Maybe fans should lobby. Maybe they should say we have had enough now, some brilliant things have come through in our game, but that’s not one of them.”

Huddersfield head coach David Wagner was also unhappy post-game, slamming Vokes for elbowing Schindler in the second half.

Article continues below

“It was a very nasty challenge, nothing I like to see in football matches, even if I don’t like to say someone has done it on purpose,” he said.

“This is too dangerous, it’s something the striker has to control himself because it could be much more serious than it is.

“[Schindler’s] face doesn’t look nice and the elbows are nothing I like to see in football.”

Hart ready if England come calling – Dyche – football news

Burnley manager Sean Dyche believes Joe Hart is in the kind of form that would warrant a recall to the England squad.

Hart has endured a difficult last two years, culminating in not making his country’s squad for their memorable World Cup campaign.

The 31-year-old, however, joined Burnley on a two-year deal in August and has started all six Premier League games for the Clarets so far this season.

Hart played an important role in his side’s 4-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday – their first league win of the campaign – in front of England boss Gareth Southgate and Dyche is confident that if called upon, he would not disappoint.

“I don’t know [if he will get called up] but if that was to occur, I think he’d be ready, if needed,” he said.

“I think Gareth is mostly trying to look to the future and the new players coming through.

“But he will also be well aware it is good to have experience around that group – that helps bring some of the younger players through.

“I trust Gareth to do whatever he has to do.”

Dyche takes his side to Burton Albion in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, where Steven Defour will make his long-awaited comeback from knee surgery undertaken in February.

Article continues below

The game is likely to come too soon for another long-term absentee, Robbie Brady, but the Republic of Ireland international is edging closer to a comeback after sustaining a knee injury in December.

Brady – who played 82 minutes for the Under-23s on Monday – told the club’s official website: “It’s been a long number of months now but I’m feeling better as the weeks have gone on since I picked up that knock in pre-season.

“I feel really good so, please God, it’s not much longer. I feel almost ready and I’m itching to get back.”

Wolves boss Nuno ignoring Manchester United talk – football news

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is ignoring speculation linking him with the manager’s job at Manchester United.

Reports emerged in Germany over the past week suggesting the 44-year-old has been identified as a future successor to Jose Mourinho by the Red Devils’ hierarchy.

However, the former Porto coach has no desire to encourage the rumours by discussing them in public.

“You know me. I don’t talk about that. It does not make sense,” he told a news conference when asked if he was flattered by the talk.

“This is not the moment to even think about it. I don’t think about it, I totally ignore that, I totally ignore it.”

When pressed on whether he would aspire to manage a club like United one day, Nuno replied: “I don’t do like that. I go on a daily basis.

“I know what I have to do tomorrow [Saturday]: to prepare the boys well and prepare the team for a tough game against Burnley. This is the way I look at the future. I take it day by day.”

The Portuguese manager took charge of the club took charge of Wolves in May 2017, signing a three-year deal.

He then led the club to a spot in the Premier League, achieving promotion with four matches to spare in the Championship season.

Wolves host Burnley on Sunday looking for their second Premier League win of the season.

They then travel to Old Trafford to face United on September 22.

Man Utd & Mourinho emphatically answer critics with Lukaku-led victory over Burnley – football news

After back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Tottenham, there were plenty of debates as to what Manchester United needed. A new manager? A new direction within the boardroom? A renewed vigour from their players?

One thing that couldn’t be questioned was their need to bounce back with a win at Burnley on Sunday, and boy did Jose Mourinho’s side deliver.

The action-packed 2-0 victory at Turf Moor was a showcase of many of the best traits of Manchester United. They took the game to their opponents, got themselves into a winning position and threatened to score plenty more than their final tally. And even after going down to 10 men after Marcus Rashford’s second-half red card they continued to make chances while also showing the guts necessary to deal with Burnley’s desperate attacks at the other end.

It couldn’t have been scripted better by Mourinho no matter how hard he tried. The manager had got himself worked up in the week, referring time and again to his previous honours in a bit to build a siege mentality between himself and the Manchester United supporters.

There was even a pre-match plane protest by a group of United fans, with the words ‘Ed Woodward: A specialist in failure!’ being displayed in the skies as the debate over the executive vice-chair’s relationship with the manager intensifies.

But it was the performance on the pitch that was always going to speak loudest, and here United provided the perfect answer to the critics.

They started with purpose and desire, even if their play didn’t always have the same slick feel about it which had been evident in the first half at Old Trafford on Monday night. Jesse Lingard had a trio of opportunities early on, while Alexis Sanchez regularly got into good crossing positions and both Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw were getting forward at will.

United eventually got the goal they had threatened when Sanchez waited and waited on the ball before delivering an inch-perfect cross for Romelu Lukaku to head home. It was a much-needed goal for a striker whose first-half miss against Spurs had been pinpointed by many as a key moment in the embarrassing defeat.

Manchester United celebrate

He would have another before half-time, sweeping home from inside the six-yard box after Jesse Lingard’s initial shot had been partially blocked. The 2-0 lead was a more than fair reflection on proceedings as a jaded Burnley barely laid a glove on United.

The visitors were equally dominant to begin the second half and should have had a third when substitute Marcus Rashford was fouled by Aaron Lennon in the Burnley area. But Paul Pogba’s penalty was saved by Joe Hart and within two minutes Rashford’s afternoon would be at an end.

The England attacker responded to Phil Bardsley’s niggle in a challenge on the bye-line by planted his head on the ex-United defender. After showing Bardsley a yellow card, Jonathan Moss produced a red for Rashford just 10 minutes after he had replaced Sanchez.

Article continues below

Even down to 10 men United were on top. Lukaku was somehow being denied a hat-trick by Ben Mee and Pogba dragged a shot just across goal, underlining even further how superior Mourinho’s side were.

As the final whistle approached the chant of “Mourinho’s red and white army” could be heard long and loud from the away end, just as it had in the Stretford End on Monday. It carried much cheerier tones this time around though, and nobody will be more relieved than the manager himself.

His side did the business for him in a game he could ill-afford to lose.

Burnley vs Manchester United: TV channel, live stream, squad news & preview – football news

Two loss out of three opening fixtures is not the way in which Jose Mourinho envisioned his third season at Old Trafford to go, and Manchester United could be in danger of losing a spectacular third game in a row if they fail to recover against Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.

The Red Devils will need to regain confidence following an abysmal 3-0 home loss to Tottenham and a 3-2 loss to Brighton to leave them languishing in 13th place in the table.

Burnley will also have added incentive to win the fixture as they are also off the backs of two successive losses – to Watford and newly promoted Fulham.

Match Preview

Alexis Sanchez Manchester United 2018-19

Mourinho’s terrible week started at the 3-0 home loss to Tottenham (which marked his worst ever home defeat) and has seemed to be on a downward spiral throughout the opening weeks of the season.

Following his clashes with the Manchester United board due to their inability to supply him with the players he wanted to sign in the summer, the Portuguese manager was subjected to a shock loss away to Brighton and then a devastating defeat at Old Trafford to Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

The press conference that ensued seemed to perfectly encapsulate the mayhem in which he has been embroiled with at Man United this season – stating that he demands ‘respect’ due to having won three Premier League titles despite losing by a scoreline of 3-0 at home.

Article continues below

In his most recent press conference, Mourinho cited philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel in his latest bizarre rant.

The Red Devils will need to bounce back fast and hard if they want to continue to remain in the race to challenge for the title, as their rivals Man City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea already occupy the top half of the table.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley will be disappointed following their exit from the Europa League after failing to beat Olympiakos, and are yet to register a win this season in the Premier League after drawing to Southampton on opening day.

Mourinho: Alexis to use international break to help lift Man Utd – football news

Jose Mourinho says Alexis Sanchez will use the upcoming international break to help lift Manchester United’s season.

The Red Devils have made a stuttering start to the new Premier League season, losing back-to-back games against Brighton and Tottenham.

Alexis has also endured early-season struggles, having missed United’s 3-2 defeat against Brighton through injury.

However, the forward came off the bench against Tottenham and will not play any part in Chile’s double-header against Japan and South Korea, in a major boost to United.

And Mourinho says the 29-year-old is planning to use the two-week international break to improve his fitness ahead of a busy schedule for United.

Mourinho told the club’s official website: “He’s [Alexis] not going to the national team for these two friendlies in Japan and South Korea, which is good news for us because after that we play Watford and then immediately play [in the] Champions League [away at Young Boys].

“He’s committed, he’s focused, he works hard. I believe that he will improve.

“I didn’t ask [Alexis], I never ask players not to go [on international duty] and I never contact national teams for players not to go.
