Guardiola: There are five teams in Premier League title race – football news

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has no doubt there are five teams in contention for the Premier League title.

City and Liverpool have been talked about as the major threats to win the title this season, and the duo are two points clear at the top.

However, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham are all within two points after nine games this season.

As his side prepare for a trip to face Spurs on Monday, Guardiola said it was a five-team race for the Premier League title.

“I don’t have doubt about that. There are just two points difference between four, five or six teams. They’re all so strong,” he said.

Ahead of that showdown at Wembley Stadium, Guardiola highlighted Spurs as a side that have proven their quality over the years, despite their recent lack of big transfer spending.

“You see the line-up – the first 11, 12, 13 players from Tottenham for the last five or six years, Tottenham are always up there,” Guardiola added.

Article continues below

“Obviously they cannot invest in players because of their incredible stadium that cost a lot of money. They’re a top side. I’ve said that from my first year here.

“They were my first defeat here and I realised how strong they are. Last season we did really well in both games, but they’ve got a good manager [Mauricio Pochettino] and good players.”

City sit on top of the Premier League table thanks to a goal difference that is 10 better than Liverpool, and will look to ensure they remain top by picking up the victory over Spurs on Monday.

Ramsey unsure why Arsenal withdrew contract offer he was about to sign – football news

Aaron Ramsey admits to having received no fresh contract offer from Arsenal, with it still puzzling as to why terms he was close to agreeing were withdrawn by the club.

The Wales international has been allowed to enter the final year of his current deal, just like Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Jack Wilshere before him.

Discussions regarding an extension have dragged on for some time, with no compromise having been reached with a player now heading towards free agency.

Ramsey has been left slightly bemused by a long-running saga, with the 27-year-old unable to explain why the Gunners have walked away from talks.

He told reporters when quizzed for an update on his situation: “Well, there is no contract on the table at the moment so there is nothing for me to consider.

“We all know that the contract was taken away off the table. I’m not sure exactly why because a few weeks before we sort of agreed and I was ready to sign.

“Something happened, I am not sure exactly what, but that contract is no longer there, or nothing’s on the table. So I just have to get my head down, work hard and try and help this team as much as I can now. We’ll see where that takes me.”

Ramsey has continued to figure for Arsenal amid the uncertainty surrounding his future, with Unai Emery having handed him the armband for a 1-0 Europa League victory over Sporting.

Aaron Ramsey Arsenal

He insists he will continue to keep his focus locked on his playing commitments until told otherwise, with there little he can do about an expiring deal at present.

“Hopefully somebody will come up and tell me why,” Ramsey added on the breakdown in communication.

Article continues below

“I’ll accept that if there’s a reason. I’m going out and playing the way I have always played… Nothing [about the contract situation] is in my head when I’m out there. I’m just trying to have fun on the football pitch.

“These things happen and I am just concentrating on playing now. I’m not really thinking about anything else too much. I’ve got other things as well in my life that I am delighted with. I had twins last week so everything is good at the moment for me. I can’t complain.”

Ramsey has helped Arsenal to embark on an 11-game winning run, with that impressive sequence of results having aided their cause across Premier League, Carabao Cup and Europa League competition.

Arsenal Team News: Injuries, suspensions and line-up vs Crystal Palace – football news

Arsenal will look to continue their amazing run of form on Sunday when they face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The Gunners have won 11 matches in a row in all competitions and picked up another victory on Thursday night when they narrowly beat Sporting 1-0 in Lisbon.

Unai Emery’s side look particularly impressive in the second half of matches and boast a plethora of options in attack, showcased by Danny Welbeck’s winner against Sporting.

Arsenal are currently in fourth place level on points with Chelsea and Tottenham, just two points behind league leaders Manchester City and Liverpool – who also have the same points tally.

Arsenal Injuries

Petr Cech is back in full training following a hamstring injury sustained at the end of September against Watford.

Konstantinos Mavropanos is still recovering from a groin injury while Ainsley Maitland-Niles is fit after a small fracture to his left fibula.

Club captain Laurent Koscielny is also back in training, while Nacho Monreal faces a fitness test on a minor hamstring problem.

Arsenal Suspensions

Arsenal have no suspensions for this game.

Possible Arsenal Starting Line-Up

Emery made six changes for the victory over Sporting in the Europa League and he’s likely to do the same against Palace.

Alexandre Lacazette will come back into the starting line-up, as could Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while Mesut Ozil will return in his favoured No.10 role.

Hector Bellerin looks likely to start at right-back after being rested for the match in Lisbon, with Shkodran Mustafi expected to partner Sokratis Papastathopoulos in defence.

The midfield partnership of Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira also looks set to continue if Nacho Monreal is passed fit.

Crystal Palace Team News

Alexander Sortloth is expected to return from a virus after missing the 2-0 defeat to Everton at the weekend.

The £9 million ($12m) summer signing will bolster Roy Hodgson’s striking options as Christian Benteke is ruled out with a knee injury.

Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend played upfront against the Toffees but Hodgson could decide to introduce a more natural option in the form of Sorloth following the disappointing result at Goodison Park.

TV Coverage & Kick-Off Time

Kick-off is 1:30pm BST (9:30pm ET) on Monday, and the game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom. It will be shown on NBCSN in the United States, and on various channels around the world.

Ozil’s message for Emery after playing him on the right for Arsenal: No.10 is my best position – football news

Mesut Ozil has insisted that the No.10 role remains his best position for Arsenal with Unai Emery having experimented by using him in other areas of the pitch.

The German playmaker played a starring role behind Alexandre Lacazette in the Gunners’ 3-1 win over Leicester City, although he has popped up in different positions across the attack at the start of the 2018-19 season.

That has included him being stationed on the right and left-hand side, as Emery attempts to fit Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Aaron Ramsey into the same team.

Ozil, though, maintains that the No.10 position is his best but promises to give his all wherever the Arsenal boss decides to play him.

He told Sky Sports: “For me it is not my best position, I think my best position is as a No. 10 but at the end of the day I have to accept and respect what the coach decides.

“So I have to give everything I can on the right side, it’s new for me but it’s fun for me as well, especially with the goals and I will continue to give my best on that side.”

The 30-year-old midfielder also praised Emery’s desire to succeed at the Emirates Stadium and has challenged himself to create more goals for the Gunners.

“He’s younger and has brought in some Spanish specialists and wants to make everything perfect,” the German said. “The team understand him and he has shown us his character and how he wants to play.

“Of course, we need time to understand everything completely but it is going well – he is a very good coach and as a player you can speak to him and he listens which makes everything easier for us.

“We are fourth in the table so we know we can achieve more and I need to show on the pitch my potential to help the team but I think so far it is going well, especially with the goals. I have to perhaps produce some more assists but it is going well.

“As a player, I want to win titles and I hope we can reach that with the team because we have the potential. We are on a good way but we know the Premier League and other competitions in front of us are hard but we will give everything to reach our goals.”

Article continues below

Ozil also discussed a previous meeting with former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane, with the World Cup winner having not had the chance to play under the Frenchman having left the Liga giants prior to his appointment as first-team coach in 2016.

He said: “I was really nervous, my hands were sweating but he was really calm and cool and I really enjoyed meeting him.

“I liked his style of football, always playing with vision and calm on the pitch and to see another player in a better position – he was not selfish. I was happy to meet him while at Madrid – he was always my idol and I still watch clips of him sometimes before games and how he used to play.”

Ozil laughs off Souness’ ‘absent in games’ criticisms: I listen to people who say things to my face! – football news

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has responded to criticisms of his playing style by insisting that he “just laughs” at those that don’t say things to his face.

Former Liverpool midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness recently claimed that the Germany international is a “polarising” figure, after he played a key role in the Gunners’ 3-1 win over Leicester City.

Indeed, he made the claim that the playmaker is often “absent” in big games, and that his performance against the Foxes was not enough for him to be hailed as a game-changing player.

Ozil, though, maintains that he does not pay attention to those who criticise him in the media, insisting that he only listens to those who say things to him in person.

The German has thus far scored four goals in nine games in all competitions, as well as providing one assist, and he told Sky Sports News on his critics: “I just laugh.

“I am not the youngest anymore but I started playing professionally at the age of 16 or 17 and it’s always been up and down with me – people either like me or they don’t.

“I don’t listen to these people – I just listen to my coach and my people who say things straight to my face. So of course, if I play bad, I know that just as I know when I play well.

“The most important thing is that the coach can help me – if I make mistakes he can tell me, we can speak and I can improve for the future.

“But if people just say bad things about me because they want to be in the newspaper – I know that and I don’t care about them.”

Ozil also described how he hates losing, even in training, and that he can become “aggressive” if things aren’t going his way.

“I always have motivation, particularly before the games – I want to win all the games and I hate to lose, even in training I am p*ssed and aggressive because I always want to win,” he added.

Article continues below

“I am a very calm person, sometimes on the pitch I get very emotional if I make mistakes or give the ball away because I want to make everything perfect.

“The coach wants me to give everything on the pitch – which is what I do but I still work hard to reach my aims.

“I have said before the main thing is to achieve more than we have over the last few years and I think we have the potential to win something with the team. Hopefully at the end of the season we will win some trophies.”

Europa League 2018-19: Favourites, outsiders, underdogs, qualified teams & fixtures – football news

The Europa League is underway and this year’s edition features Premier League giants Chelsea and Arsenal after the two London clubs failed to finish in the Premier League top four.

Reigning champions Atletico Madrid will only be able to defend their title should they drop into the competition after finishing third in the Champions League.

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers and Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic are also vying for honours.

GBP Sports brings you all the details of this year’s Europa League campaign including key fixtures, dates, draw details and more.

Favourites to win Europa League 2018-19

FA Cup winners Chelsea are heavy favourites to win a second Europa League this season (priced at 5/1 according to bet365) after a surprise fifth-placed finish in the Premier League, which meant that they failed to qualify for the more esteemed Champions League.

Maurizio Sarri’s first full season in charge of the Blues will be a pressure-riddled one as he will be expected to return the west London side to the top-tier of European football, preferably through finishing in the Premier League top four or by winning the Europa League.

A new-look Arsenal featuring new manager Unai Emery are also among the favourites to win the competition, priced at 7/1 to win. The Gunners were expected to win the competition last year but fell short to eventual champions Atletico Madrid, and Emery – like Sarri – is expected to attain Champions League season for the following campaign.

Europa League 2018-19 outsiders

Higuain Milan Chievo

Sevilla are priced at 14/1 to win the competition after winning the competition a record five times, last winning it in 2016 at the expense of Liverpool in the final.

Sevilla finished disappointingly in seventh place in La Liga though are a strong force in Europe – eliminating Manchester United in the last 16 round of the Champions League last season as well as holding Liverpool to a 3-3 draw after being three goals down at half-time.

AC Milan have odds of 20/1 to better their last 16 finish of last season, where they were eliminated from the competition by Arsenal.

The likes of Bayer Leverkusen (25/1), Villarreal (25/1)Lazio (33/1), Marseille (50/1) and RB Leipzig (50/1) are all considered outsiders to.

Europa League 2018-19 underdogs

Odsonne Edouard Celtic Europa League

Celtic are considered serious long shots at 80/1, while Rangers‘ chances are deemed even slimmer at 150/1.

Spanish side Real Betis have odds of 40/1 to emerge as tournament winners after finishing sixth in La Liga – one position better than their neighbours Sevilla.

Dynamo Kiev, meanwhile, are rated 66/1 to win the tournament.

Welbeck winner only highlights Emery’s options as Arsenal’s attacking machine rolls on – football news

As Arsenal touched down in Lisbon ahead of Thursday’s night’s clash with Sporting, the Gunners posted a video on social media of their last training session before leaving north London. A six minute clip showcased a squad in high spirits after 10 successive wins; confident in their ability to get the job done no matter what the data might suggest.

One man who took centre stage during the session was Danny Welbeck, finishing with unerring accuracy past young goalkeeper Dejan Iliev.

Fast-forward 24 hours, and Welbeck was wheeling away towards the corner of the Estádio Jose Alvalade having shown that same precision to net the only goal of the Gunners’ clash with the Portuguese giants after latching onto Lucas Torreira’s through-ball via an error from former Liverpool centre-back Sebastian Coates.

The England international’s 78th minute strike secured an 11th straight victory for Unai Emery’s side, and their third in this season’s Europa League. Many felt Welbeck’s main contributions over the current campaign would come in this competition, and thus far they have been proven correct. But does his form suggest he could be key domestically as well as on the continent?

In his last five starts for Emery’s side, Welbeck has been directly involved in five goals having found the net on four occasions as well as laying on a solitary assist. Not bad for a player who is essentially a third-choice forward.

Welbeck would been forgiven for pursuing opportunities away from the Emirates Stadium. It is unlikely he will move ahead of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – who missed Arsenal’s two best chances before Welbeck’s goal in Lisbon – in the pecking order. There are other clubs in the Premier League’s top six – namely those across the capital – where Welbeck would, at the very least, be second in line.

Instead he has knuckled down after a horror run of injuries and made himself a key member of an Arsenal squad that continues to defy sluggish first-half performances and pick up wins.

Again here they struggled during the opening 45 minutes, with a frontline of Welbeck, Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan failing to trouble the Sporting backline, though the three defensive midfielders deployed by Jose Peseiro might have had something to do with that.

Arsenal celebrate 2018-19

At the other end both Rob Holding and Sokratis Papastathopoulos survived scares, with the latter perhaps a little fortunate that a less lenient team of officials were not in charge after pulling back Fredy Montero as he bore down on goal.

Article continues below

That said, Bernd Leno was rarely troubled. In fact the Gunners did not concede a shot on target – a first in Europe since their trip to Monaco in March 2015 – as they recorded their first ever win on Portuguese shores in seven attempts.

With Lacazette and Alex Iwobi only making brief cameos off the bench and Mesut Ozil not even required, it is clear that Emery has a forward line the whole of Europe would fear. Having overseen the club’s longest winning run for a decade, the next challenge now is to find the complete performance to go with their raw results.

Whether he can or not remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, though – if Welbeck continues his own form they have every chance of challenging for more than just the Europa League this time around.

‘Liverpool will rip Arsenal to shreds’ – Merson not buying ‘fortunate’ 10-game winning run – football news

Liverpool will “rip Arsenal to shreds”, according to Paul Merson, with the Gunners “very fortunate” to find themselves on a 10-game winning run.

Unai Emery’s side have offered a perfect response to opening their 2018-19 campaign with back-to-back defeats, with Premier League, Carabao Cup and Europa League successes helping to rebuild confidence and raise expectations.

It has been suggested that Arsenal, who slipped out of the top four towards the end of Arsene Wenger’s reign, could force their way back into title contention this term, so impressive have they been of late.

Merson, though, believes that a return to Champions League competition represents the height of their ambition, with a side that can look like “the Harlem Globetrotters” on their day still considered to lack the consistency and talent to compete with the very best.

The former Gunners star told talkSPORT: “If they finish in the top four they’ve pulled up trees.

“They’ve done well to win 10 games on the trot, don’t get me wrong.

“But when they come up against Tottenham and Liverpool, and especially Liverpool at the Emirates, I would be shocked if Liverpool didn’t win by three clear goals.

“They will rip Arsenal to shreds.

“I’m scratching my head, because Arsenal have won 10 games in a row and in half of those games they could have been behind by so many in the first half.

“But when they get going in the second half, when everything is rolling, then they’re the Harlem Globetrotters.

Mesut Ozil Arsenal Leicester Premier League 2018-19

“I mean look at Mesut Ozil, he was phenomenal [against Leicester]. If he played like that every week, he’d be the best player in the world.

“So no, I can’t buy into it. I think they’ve been very, very fortunate.

“They haven’t played anybody yet, and you can’t play like this against teams like Liverpool.”

Article continues below

Arsenal are back in European action on Thursday when they travel to Portugal to take on Sporting.

They will then round off their October schedule with a Premier League derby date with Crystal Palace and a Carabao Cup fourth round clash with Blackpool.

November is opened with a visit from Liverpool, while a return date with the Reds and testing meetings with north London rivals Tottenham and old adversaries Manchester United are set to take place in December.

Ndidi bemoans Leicester City’s luck in Arsenal loss – football news

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi believes they were unlucky in their 3-1 loss to Arsenal in Monday’s Premier League game at the Emirates Stadium.

Despite starting the encounter on a positive note with Hector Bellerin turning the ball into his own net, the Foxes failed to build on the impressive start allowing the Gunners to claw their way back, with Mesut Ozil igniting the comeback with his leveller before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s brace sealed the win.

The Nigeria international could have restored the lead to the King Power Stadium outfit in the 58th minute but his powerful header was denied by the crossbar.

And the 21-year-old has expressed his disappointment in the result – their second consecutive league defeat – which has seen them remain in the 11th spot in the log.

“I would say it’s a bit disappointing in the second half, we did our bit in the first half, we did really well,” Ndidi told LCFC TV.

“It’s not just about looking at the first half, we need to develop the second half and go from there. It was a tight game. When we conceded the second and then the third, everything just didn’t go our way.

“If we’d have got the penalty and then the ball hadn’t hit the crossbar everything would have worked perfectly for us. We just look forward and take confidence into the next game.”

The midfielder who is confident in the 3-5-2 formation deployed by Claude Puel believes that Ozil’s equaliser damaged his side’s drive.

“That really crumbled us but I think we did our bit in the first half, if we had stayed 1-0 up going into the second half we would have been more confident.

Article continues below

“Everything is going fine, even though we lost we’re getting used to the formation and doing our bit.

“As I said, we take the first half, also the second half we just need to learn from our mistakes and then correct it towards the next game.”

‘Ozil capable of this every Arsenal game’ – Emery praises ace’s Leicester showing – football news

Unai Emery hailed the qualities of playmaker Mesut Ozil following Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Leicester, but said the German needs to produce that level on a weekly basis.

Ozil has cut a divisive figure since moving to the Emirates Stadium under Arsene Wenger in 2013, with his attitude often questioned.

However, he turned in a world-class display on Monday as the London club came from behind to secure a 3-1 win over the Foxes , with a couple of second-half goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang turning the game in their favour.

It was, however, Ozil who grabbed the spotlight, even branding the performance “sexy” , but Emery wants him to produce such quality on more regular a basis.

“For Mesut, it was a very good performance, and a very good victory together. And also we are going to push and demand for ourselves and for him also, this regularly,” he said.

The former Real Madrid player was handed the captain’s armband for the match and was praised by the way he rallied his side after they had fallen behind due to an own goal from Hector Bellerin.

Ozil grabbed the equaliser, making him the top scoring German in Premier League history with 30 goals, and then dominated the game from midfield in the second half.

“It’s important to be a leader in this situation,” the Spaniard said. “But we have a lot of players in the team capable of doing it.

“I think Ozil can play every match with this commitment and with this quality, whether he is captain or not.”

It has been a rocky period in the life of the 30-year-old, who quit the Germany national side in the summer amid a storm of criticism, with Ozil claiming he was specifically targeted because of his Turkish heritage.

Arsenal’s win over Leicester was their 10th straight victory in all competitions – the first time that they have enjoyed such a run of form since 2007.

Next up for the Gunners is a Europa League clash against Sporting CP in Lisbon on Thursday, then next weekend they are back on Premier League duty on Sunday, when they will face Crystal Palace.
