Real Madrid prepare for first Clasico without Cristiano Ronaldo – football news

Barcelona and Real Madrid have a lot at stake when they meet at Camp Nou on Sunday, but the first Clasico of the season will be haunted by the absence of two stars who have been at the forefront of the clash for almost a decade.

The news that Lionel Messi is ruled out after fracturing his arm against Sevilla on Saturday came as a devastating shock for Ernesto Valverde’s team. Messi’s 37 appearances in the Clasico mean he has featured more times against Madrid than any other opponent. He has been such a prominent figure that Barca have not faced their rivals without the Argentine sensation since December 2007.

But while the fixture’s all-time highest goal scorer will be back to fight the capital club later in the season and beyond, one familiar face will never return and his absence may prove even more decisive in this game.

For the first time since Madrid signed him from Manchester United in 2009, they will face Barcelona in a La Liga game without Cristiano Ronaldo.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s summer departure, along with coach Zinedine Zidane, has left Los Blancos struggling this season under new boss Julen Lopetegui.

Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Levante leaves Madrid without a win from their last five games and Goal understands failure to bounce back this weekend will see the former Spain manager dismissed just a few months into his new role.

As Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema struggle to find the net, Lopetegui could do with a hero of Ronaldo’s ilk for the trip to Catalunya.

In his 30 appearances against the Blaugrana, Ronaldo scored 18 times, with nine of those coming in the league.

The attacker missed only two Clasicos in his nine years in the Spanish capital: a yellow card suspension ruled him out of the Supercopa de Espana second leg in August 2017, while he missed the Copa del Rey final in 2014 due to injury.

While Madrid are sitting fifth in La Liga and four points behind leaders Barca, Ronaldo is on form again after a slow start at Juventus with five goals and four assists in nine Serie A appearances.

Article continues below

And after getting the better of a Ronaldo-less Madrid with Levante, goalkeeper Oier Olazabal believes it is clear they miss their former talisman.

“Even they are not as good as they usually are, that aim they have,” he said.

“Cristiano brings you a lot of goals. He scored 50 goals per season and it is clear that they miss them.”

Roma president hits out at Italian media for ‘making s*** up’ amid Di Francesco sack reports – football news

Roma president James Pallotta has hit out at the Italian press for “making s*** up” amid claims he is about to sack manager Eusebio Di Francesco.

The Giallorossi lost 2-0 to SPAL at Stadio Olimpico on Saturday, leading to a report from Corriere dello Sport claiming that Pallotta had held meetings with the club’s hierarchy regarding Di Francesco and his future.

Pallotta, though, has hit out at such reports, insisting that he did not hold any conversations with the Serie A club’s powerbrokers over the possibility of axing the manager.

“Contrary to certain articles in today’s Italian media, I didn’t speak to Franco Baldini, Monchi, Mauro Baldissoni or Alex Zecca after the match about the coach and any journalists reporting on imaginary conversations are simply making s*** up,” he said in a statement released via the club’s Twitter account.

Roma are next in action in the Champions League on Tuesday, where they will face CSKA Moscow.

Article continues below

They will be without midfielder Javier Pastore, who has been ruled out with a muscle injury as they look to get back to winning ways.

The Italian club have thus far beaten Viktoria Plzen 5-0, though they were thumped 3-0 by Real Madrid in their opening European game of the season.

Roma are currently seventh in Serie A, 11 points behind leaders Juventus, having won four of their opening nine games.

ISL 2018-19: Chennaiyin FC’s John Gregory demands defensive improvement – football news

Defending champions Chennaiyin FC have to improve the defensive aspect of the game if they are to start picking up points, according to head coach John Greogry.

The Marina Machans are without a point after three matches in the fifth season of Indian Super League (ISL). A visit to Delhi is their best hope yet of picking up three points as the Lions are winless this season as well.

“The boys are feeling good, all very fit. All 25 players are in contention. We obviously know that playing against Delhi, we have a couple of our old players there from last season who have both got gold (champions’) medals. We are expecting a tough game,” Gregory said on the eve of the clash.

Analysing the team’s poor start, the Englishman said, “You can always look at the reason why we have not started so well. You can always make judgements and your own assessments. But the effort has certainly been first class.

Hugo Boumous Chennaiyin FC FC Goa ISL 5 10062018

“The effort that the boys have put in for all three matches is incredible. I certainly have no problems with the way that they have approached the games. It is just that we have made a couple of defensive mistakes. Big mistakes, which we rarely made last season in the 18 regular season matches.

“I think we had one game against NorthEast United,  away from home, where we didn’t play well at all and that was really the only time where we were defensively not as good as we have been. My team last season was built on a really solid defence. It was always very difficult to score against us. That helped us to win the title.

“This season, we started well. We played well against Bengaluru and lost by a contentious goal that we thought was offside. But nevertheless, Miku finished it very well. But other than that, we defended well in that game. But in the last two matches, we haven’t defended as well as we should do. That (defensive) side of our game has to improve.

“Last week, we worked so hard to get to 3-1 and then we just, people not marking when they should have been marking, people not concentrating when they should have been concentrating, it gave chances to the opposition and they took full advantage of it. Once we make sure that side of our game is good, I have got no fears about the rest of the season.”

Chennaiyin FC NorthEast United ISL

John Gregory’s hopes achieving a playoff spot has not diminished at all. The champion coach believes the difference in points on the league table does not matter as long as the team achieves a top-four spot.

“We just need to keep stringing together 2-3 wins. Even if you finish fourth, 150 points behind the team that finished first, if you are in the playoffs, you have got a chance to be champions at the end of the season. We were eight points behind Bengaluru FC last year,” the coach recollected.

Lastly, the coach heaped praise upon Thoi Singh who scored a brace against NorthEast United in their 3-4 loss.

“I did not realize that he had never scored before. You would have expected him to score in during the amount of time he has played for us. The goal that he scored, our second goal, in my opinion, was the goal of the game. It was exceptionally well worked. Isaac did brilliant and to get Thoi in that situation, even he could not miss in that situation.

“Let’s hope he keeps it up. He really played well. He has got a heart and a fantastic pair of lungs. He gives it everything. When he puts that shirt on, he gives his 100 per cent.

Isco: Real Madrid won’t cry over Ronaldo – he didn’t want to be here! – football news

Isco insists that Real Madrid are refusing to lament Cristiano Ronaldo’s sale to Juventus, querying why they would miss a player who no longer wanted to represent the Blancos.

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo moved to the Serie A champions for €112m (£99m/€129m), including bonuses, during the summer and has left a void that Madrid have struggled to fill.

Indeed, Julen Lopetegui’s side came within a whisker of breaking the club scoring record for minutes without a goal as they crashed to a 2-1 loss to Levante on Saturday, with left-back Marcelo saving their blushes in that regard .

Isco, however, is stoic in the face of such adversity, which has seen them go five matches without a win ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Viktoria Plzen.

“We can’t be crying for someone who didn’t want to be here,” he told the media.

Meanwhile, the Spain international has branded the pressure that has built on head coach Lopetegui after just a couple of months in charge as “crazy”, despite Madrid sitting in seventh ahead of Sunday’s Clasico clash with Barcelona, their lowest league position after nine games for 17 years .

“The press do not have the power to get rid of a Madrid coach. We believe fully in what this team can achieve, and the coach has full confidence of the players. After that, many things can happen, but I am convinced we can have a very good season,” he said.

“I think it would be crazy, you have to let him work. He has only been here for two months. If you get rid of the coach, you have to get rid of all of us. It is us that haven’t been scoring goals or playing well. It belongs to all of us, not just the coach.”

Article continues below

Isco made his return from a bout of appendicitis at the weekend as he managed an hour against Levante in Madrid’s ill-fated outing.

He will aim to feature against Plzen on Tuesday, with the pressure on the three-time defending European champions to produce a positive result after slumping to a shock 1-0 loss away to CSKA Moscow in their last outing.

However, a 3-0 win over Roma in their opening group-stage match, in which Isco netted, has given them some insurance.

Hope for Man Utd? Ronaldo’s dismal record against Mourinho – football news

Old adversaries Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho will meet on Tuesday, when Juventus visit Manchester United in the Champions League.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has spent time working under his countryman at Real Madrid, but when he has been forced to come up against him in competitive action he has not shown the type of form that has seen him score at a rate of almost one goal per game for the duration of his career.

He is seeking to score his first Champions League goal for Juve after making a summer move from Los Blancos. Indeed, his debut in the competition for the seven-time Serie A defending champions ended embarrassingly as he was sent off for pulling the hair of Jeison Murillo, which resulted in a one-match ban.

If he were to net against Mourinho, however, it would be something of a rarity. Although he has faced his compatriot on 14 previous occasions, he has found the net against him only once.

GFX Ronaldo Mou

Ronaldo’s first match against Mourinho came when both were still in Portugal. The attacker was on the books of Sporting CP, while Mou was still in charge of Porto. Twice they met in this set up and twice it was Mourinho who took the honours, with the youngster failing to net.

The miserable run the CR7 endured at the hands of Mourinho continued even when he moved to Manchester United in 2003. The Red Devils were hot favourites to overcome Porto in the Champions League quarter-finals of 2003-04, but a late goal for the Portuguese club from Costinha at Old Trafford sent them through and their coach infamously charging down the touchline to celebrate with his team.

It took until the manager had moved to Chelsea in order to gain a modicum of success in the rivalry, with Ronaldo’s assist for Darren Fletcher the springboard to a victory at Old Trafford in 2005.

Throughout Jose’s first spell in the Premier League, he continued to get the better of the attacker, though when the manager moved to Inter, Ronaldo finally earned his first goal against one of his sides, heading home in a 2009 Champions League last-16 clash for the Red Devils.

Article continues below

Since then, the pair have rarely met, spending a three-year period together at the Bernabeu, during which the forward notched 60 goals during the 2011-12 season – his second most prolific campaign ever.

Indeed, Ronaldo has only once previously faced Mourinho’s United, and even that was for a mere seven-minute cameo in a 2-1 victory for Real Madrid.

Tuesday’s game, therefore, promises to be the rebirth of a rivalry largely dormant for nine years.

Who will win Champions League 2018-19? Favourites, outsiders & underdogs – football news

The draw for the Champions League group stage was made in August, and there are plenty of high-profile clashes on the cards.

Excitement in Europe comes early this year what with there being one of several ‘Groups of Death’ being drawn, with the likes of French champions Paris Saint-Germain facing runners-up Liverpool in Group C and Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo returning to his former home of Manchester United, as well as a meeting with former boss Jose Mourinho.

Elsewhere, Tottenham have once again been given an unfavourable group draw as they face the challenge of beating Barcelona, while Dortmund must face off with Europa League winners Atletico Madrid.

GBP Sports brings you all the details of the favourites , underdogs and outsiders ahead of the upcoming Champions League season, as well as all the teams who have already qualified and when fixtures will be played.

Favourites to win the 2018-19 Champions League

Manchester City have emerged as strong favourites to win the first Champions League this season and are placed at odds of winning 9/2 according to bet365. Pep Guardiola’s side are yet to lift the European Cup and have another formidable chance of winning the competition – placed in a benign group that consists of the likes of Lyon, Shakhtar Donetsk and Hoffenheim.

Guardiola has experience winning the trophy with Barcelona and will be eager to repeat the success with the Citizens – as the European Cup is the one major trophy that has eluded the affluent Manchester side.

Barcelona are 5/1 to win the Champions League this season, last winning the tournament in 2015 after beating Juventus 3-1 in the final. This season will be the first in which star striker Lionel Messi takes on the captain’s armband, inheriting the honour from Andres Iniesta who left the club to join Japanese side Vissel Kobe.

The Catalan team do have a tricky group and will have to face Tottenham Hotspur – who have enjoyed a strong start to the Premier League season, having already registered a 3-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo Juventus 2018-19

The event of Portuguese megastar Cristiano Ronaldo joining Juventus this summer in a sensational €100m transfer has put the Italian side at 6/1 to win the Champions League. Ronaldo joins the Serie A team off the backs of three consecutive European Cup wins – bringing his tally to five in total – and will no doubt provide to be instrumental in their run-up to European glory.

Juve have been drawn into one of several ‘Groups of Death’, and the Portuguese striker has been gifted with a return to former club Manchester United. It could be a reunion of bittersweet nature as it was Ronaldo’s goals for Real Madrid that knocked the Red Devils out of the competition back in 2013. Europe could very well be where the forward nets his goals as he has been unable to strike for Juventus in Serie A so far this campaign.

Defending champions Real Madrid are priced at 10/1 to repeat their success this season, having won the competition for the last three years running – and would put them on course to win a fourth European title in a row, which has never before been done. Madrid, however, are currently a side in transition having recently replaced manager Zinedine Zidane with Julen Lopetegui and still aiming to fill the striker void that Ronaldo left behind.

Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain have odds of 8/1 to win the Champions League after exiting the competition at the hands of eventual winners Real Madrid in the last 16 stage, ruing the loss of star forward Neymar to injury. The French side will doubtless be buoyed by the strengths of Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani leading the line, helmed by new coach Thomas Tuchel.

A clash with Liverpool awaits the French champions in Group C, which also involves challenges against Red Star Belgrade and Napoli.

Bayern Munich are priced at 9/1 to win the Champions League after being eliminated by Real Madrid at the semi-final stage in last season’s competition. Niko Kovac takes the reins of the Bundesliga giants who will be looking to lift their first European Cup since 2013, when they won against German rivals Borussia Dortmund in the final.

They face the straightforward task of progressing past a group stage that involves clashes with Ajax, AEK Athens and Benfica.

2018-19 Champions League outsiders

Mohamed Salah Liverpool Demetri Mitchell Manchester United

Liverpool finished runners-up in the competition last year and continue to be outsiders this year at 9/1 to win outright. The Reds were placed in a Group of Death following their demotion to pot three after initially being grouped in pot two, and now face the likes of PSG and Napoli in the group stage.

Klopp’s side were lucky in being handed a kind draw in last year’s group stage, but even struggled to top their group despite facing opposition in Sevilla, Maribor and Spartak Moscow. They will find the route to this year’s Champions League final even harder, despite adding the big-name likes of goalkeeper Alisson, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Atletico Madrid are another outside bet in Europe, priced at 12/1 to win the competition. The La Liga side won the Europa League last season and will be looking to push on for Champions League success – having finished as runners-up in the competition to none other than local rivals Real Madrid on two occasions, in 2014 and 2016.

It is not for lack of a strong squad that has dented Atletico’s chances of winning the Champions League, but rather the opposition they face in their own Group of Death. Diego Simeone’s group consists of the experienced likes of Dortmund and Monaco, and the Spanish side will find it tough to progress out of their group after crashing out in the same stage last season.

Manchester United are tipped at 40/1 to lift the trophy as the Red Devils approach Jose Mourinho’s infamous ‘third season’ with the side.

A clash with Juventus is not what Mourinho had in mind for his side, who typically have strolled past the group stages in past years, and the Portuguese boss will find difficulty guiding his side to the final after off-pitch troubles consisting of clashes with the board and a poor start to the Premier League season that has already seen them lose twice in four matches.

2018-19 Champions League underdogs

Harry Kane, Tottenham

Tottenham are certainly worthy of the tag of underdog in the Champions League, with odds of 80/1 to win the competition.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side did well to finish first in their own Group of Death last year that involved Real Madrid and Dortmund, but they have been handed the unlucky side of the draw once again this year as they are faced with the prospect of facing Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven and Inter in the group stage.

Odds of Napoli winning the European competition are at 50/1, and will be rocked by the departure of coach Maurizio Sarri who guided them to a second-place finish in Serie A.

Article continues below

Roma are also priced at 100/1 to be crowned European champions and will also be dealt with a blow following the major loss of goalkeeper Alisson to Liverpool, who kept them in the tie when they played out a narrow 4-3 semi-final tie on aggregate. They shocked the world last season when they eliminated Barcelona in the quarter-final stage after losing 4-1 in the first leg, progressing to the last four based on away goals.

The Italian side now face the unruly task of having to overcome champions Real Madrid in the group stage, as well as the likes of CSKA Moscow.

German side Borussia Dortmund are rated 66/1 to pick up their first title since 1997, while Inter, who return to the top table of European football this season, are deemed a 66/1 bet to win the competition.

Barcelona rubbish prospect of Neymar return – football news

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu insists that the club have no plans to re-sign Neymar.

“Neymar? He left and there are no plans to bring him back,” he told Catalunya Radio.

“We don’t plan to sign anyone in January, unless the coaches ask for someone before then. It’s a smaller squad because we have B team players who can make the first team.”

Wilshere would’ve stayed at Arsenal if Wenger hadn’t left – football news

Jack Wilshere said he would not have joined West Ham had it not been for the departure of Arsene Wenger from Arsenal, claiming his former manager would have ensured his place in the Gunners’ first team.

The 26-year-old midfielder joined West Ham on a three-year deal in July, ending his 17-year association with Arsenal in the aftermath of Wenger’s departure.

And Wilshere has said that Unai Emery’s arrival as head coach altered his prospects in north London and convinced him it was time for a change.

“If Arsene had stayed I would have stayed because of the influence he had in my career and the trust he had in me,” Wilshere told the Islington Gazette.

“He gave me the armband and respected me a lot. So, I had pretty much agreed to stay. And then he left and that changed things.

“Arsene had said to me previously ‘stay and fight your way back into the team’. Because I knew Arsene and knew he had trust in me, I knew I could do that and fight my way into the team.

“I knew that if I got myself fit and was training well that Arsene would put me in – and he did.

“But things were changing at the club and they were going into a new era and maybe it was time for me to leave as well.”

Wilshere, who won the last of his 34 England caps at Euro 2016, has had the start of his West Ham career hampered by an ankle injury.

Article continues below

He has made four Premier League appearances for the Hammers under Manuel Pellegrini, the last coming on September 1.

Wenger, meanwhile, has been out of work since leaving Arsenal but has suggested that he would be ready to return in January.

The 69-year-old has been linked with the Real Madrid job in recent times, with Julen Lopetegui seemingly on the brink after a dismal run of results.

Just subscribed and tried, I gotta say the streaming quality is amazing! Very clear and no delay at all. I watched Man United match last Sunday, fatanstic video quality and I really enjoyed with my friend, great work and keep it up!
