Which African All-Stars are best placed to win the Champions League? – football news

COMMENT    By Solace Chukwu     Follow on Twitter

Perhaps the biggest legacy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Real Madrid is that it brings back the entropy that for so long made the Champions League so revered.

While it once seemed that retainership of the coveted trophy was the holy grail of European football, the monopoly that Real have enjoyed in the last three years had stripped away much of the mystique of it. No single footballer symbolized their outsized dominance quite like Ronaldo, from whom the goals flowed in relentlessly. Especially in the business end, where most teams are evenly matched, his star power and mentality often proved the difference.

His departure opens up the field somewhat, especially for African contenders, with only Real’s Acraf Hakimi winning the title since Chelsea’s quartet of John Obi Mikel, Michael Essien, Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou did in 2012.

That triumph, with Chelsea upsetting the odds in such remarkable fashion, also marked the last time a team outside Spain’s big two had their names on the trophy, and is a seminal point.

John Obi Mikel Chelsea Champions League 2012

It is more to the point that there have been few teams playing at a consistently high level with a strong African influence in that time. That is set to change: Liverpool, beaten finalists last time out, have added Guinea gem Naby Keita to their flying attacking double-act of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Both Mane and Salah memorably reached double figures for goals, and tore Europe apart until Sergio Ramos definitively put a stop to that, wrestling the Egyptian to the ground to end the fairytale in tears.

That run last season helped put the Reds back on the map in Europe, and they have now fortified those credentials by adding Keita, giving the workmanlike midfield which ran down the competition the last time out a more creative bent. It may prove enough of a gain to move up a level.

However, Juventus must also be considered a part of the conversation, especially as it was them who moved heaven and earth to release Ronaldo from his discontent in Madrid. They have faced the agony of being denied twice in finals in the last four years, and the Portugal international proved the difference in the quarter final stage last year as well, so much so that his mere presence had become a mental block.

Medhi Benatia Juventus

Medhi Benatia was, of course, on the receiving end of the torment, and will now heave a sigh of relief.

He would love to hold that trophy aloft himself, having been denied repeatedly at the semi-final stage while he was at Bayern Munich. Having the single biggest influence in this competition in the last decade on his side, for once, may well make all the difference.

Atletico Madrid have similarly suffered the misfortune of multiple defeats in finals, and can also look forward to the transformative impact of an emblematic forward. Antoine Griezmann may be the star of the side, but it is the aggression and energy of Diego Costa that transforms Diego Simeone’s side into a different animal.

The multifunctional play of Thomas Partey, who can play on either side of the ball in midfield, gives a rigid Atletico side a semblance of fluidity. His influence within the side has steadily increased, and the new democracy in Europe means he (and his side) has as good as they ever will to truly strike out on their own, away from the gargantuan shadow of their wealthier, noisier, infinitely more successful neighbours.

Thomas Partey Atletico Madrid

Speaking of riches, this might be the season that finally sees Paris Saint-Germain deliver on their promise. Their status as the new aristocrats of European football is now widely acknowledged, but there is only so long they can go without winning in Europe where it truly matters before stars like Neymar and Kylian Mbappe begin to yearn for La Liga.

In Thomas Tuchel, they now have the sort of young, universally acclaimed manager who fits the sexy image of the city and the club.

In Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, however, the fit is less obvious; signed right at the end of the transfer window from Stoke City, it remains to be seen in just what ways he can contribute. If PSG break their glass ceiling though, it may be a case of right place, right time for the Cameroon international.

Koulibaly Napoli

Perhaps nothing better encapsulates the openness of the field this term than Carlo Ancelotti turning up at Napoli. His reputation as something of an expert in the Champions League, a competition he has won thrice, precedes him, and means that Kalidou Koulibaly is firmly in the frame.

Article continues below

However, there is a concern here.

In replacing Maurizio Sarri with Ancelotti, there is a danger that Napoli have made the same kind of mistake as Bayern, who last employed the Italian, did when they appointed him to replace Pep Guardiola. The drop-off may be too steep in terms of intensity and tactical rigour. That would obviously count against them.

This year’s Uefa Champions League may well be the most unpredictable in a long time, and for a number of key sides, the performances of African players will be absolutely central to that.

Benzema: Real Madrid favourites to win Champions League – football news

Karim Benzema insists Real Madrid are favourites to win the Champions League this season, despite the departure of the club’s record goalscorer this summer.

Ronaldo joined Juventus during the transfer window, ending a nine-year spell in Spain, and scored his first brace for the Old Lady as they beat Sassuolo 2-1 at the weekend.

His move to Turin has clearly boosted their chances of winning the European competition, which Real have established something of a stranglehold on in recent years.

Real have won the past three competitions, and Benzema is confident that, even without the Portugal international, they will be able to taste success for an unprecedented fourth time come May.

“This competition is another level, all the matches are important, there is no easy one, and it’s one thing I like: Real Madrid is the best club in the world, every year you have to succeed,” he told Codere, per AS.

“We know there are a lot of strong rivals, but if I have to say a favourite, it’s always going to be Real Madrid, in this club the goal is always to try to win everything and play well, we have to sacrifice a lot to always be victorious.”

Real kick off the defence of their European crown this week, when they host Roma at Santiago Bernabeu, and Benzema is wary of the talents of the Italian club.

“As always, the first game at home is very important, we have to have the ball and get more rhythm than them.

Article continues below

“Roma are a good team with very good players.”

Benzema has scored four goals in Real’s opening four games of the season, netting twice against both Girona and Leganes.

Supporters will be hopeful that the Frenchman can deliver the goods once again on Wednesday, as Los Blancos look to bounce back from a disappointing 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao on Saturday in La Liga.

Matthaus should stop trampling on Gotze, claims Dortmund chief – football news

Mario Gotze might not have played a single minute of competitive football this season, but he does not merit criticism from Lothar Matthaus, according to Hans-Joachim Watzke, Borussia Dortmund’s CEO.

Matthaus has come down hard on the player in recent days, indicating that if the player who scored the World Cup-winning goal in 2014 is to thrive once again, he will have to depart Dortmund.

The Germany icon says that level is currently “behind” the 26-year-old, who is “missing quality” and the opportunity to play in a position that he can thrive in.

Watzke, however, has taken exception to these comments.

“I know that Lothar Matthaus earns his money as a pundit and has to put forward provocative theories, but it would be nice, if one of the greatest players that Germany ever had, he could leave Mario alone and not trample on him,” the CEO said.

“Mario is doing the right things: he trains well, he does not let up, he gives to the team, he’s totally focused, he’s an important part of our squad and I’m sure he’ll play some great games for BVB this season.”

Article continues below

New head coach Lucien Favre has yet to use the playmaker, who was forced to watch in frustration as Dortmund beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 on Friday.

“I know for sure that the coach has a very high opinion of him and will use him, as he clearly said after the match,” Watzke confirmed.

Since moving back to BVB in 2016, Gotze has managed fewer than 50 appearances and has mustered only four goals in all competitions.

‘UEFA panel needs sacked!’ – Bale baffled by Goal of the Season snub – football news

Gareth Bale expressed his surprise after UEFA’s Goal of the Season panel overlooked his overhead kick in the Champions League final, joking that the governing body’s decision makers “want to be sacked”.

The goal put Real Madrid 2-1 up against Liverpool in Kiev and Bale scored again in the last 10 minutes of the game to help secure a third consecutive Champions League trophy for his club.

Despite the spectacular nature of his first strike, the panel adjudicating UEFA’s Goal of the Season award for 2017-18 opted to shortlist Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrobatic goal in the quarter-final victory over Juventus ahead of Bale’s goal, with only one nominee from each of the main UEFA competitions allowed on the list.

Bale told the Daily Mail : “I don’t know how it wasn’t on that list!

“I want to know who is on the panel because they want to be sacked.”

Ronaldo’s strike won the vote, with Dimitri Payet’s Europa League quarter-final goal for Marseille finishing second ahead of Eva Navarro’s curling effort for Spain in the Under-17 Championship final.

Bale was coy on the question of whether or not his goal was superior to Ronaldo’s, saying: “It’s not for me to say!”

His strike is widely regarded as one of the best in Champions League final history and rapidly earned comparisons with Zinedine Zidane’s effort in Los Blancos’ 2002 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at Hampden but has been nominated for the Puskas Award.

Fittingly, Zidane was in charge of Madrid when Bale scored his effort in Ukraine, although he stepped down in the aftermath of the victory.

Article continues below

The Welshman has admitted that it was a goal fuelled by the frustration of having been left on the bench by the Frenchman , crediting his anger as the reason he came on and made such a dramatic impact on the game.

Madrid have started a new era under the guidance of coach Julen Lopetegui, and with Cristiano Ronaldo sold this summer to Juventus, it has opened the door for Bale to play a more regular role in the team .

The 29-year-old has started all of his side’s La Liga matches this term and has rewarded his new boss with a return of three goals and two assists. Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao was the first time this term he had failed to find the target in the Primera Division as Madrid dropped their first points of the season.

Degenek hopes Red Star can rekindle Savicevic, Stankovic and Mihajlovic glory days in CL – football news

Belgrade is a city steeped in history. It’s also home to a sleeping giant – Red Star.

Red Star Belgrade conquered European football in 1991 when a star-studded side, including Dejan Savicevic, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Robert Prosinecki and Darko Pancev, upstaged a highly fancied Marseille.

Once the toast of Europe, it has been a long time since Red Star etched their name into football history at Stadio San Nicola in Bari 27 years ago.

While Red Star have continued to dominate domestically in Serbia, the tumultuous breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s and lack of finances hampered them internationally – not since 1992 had they qualified for Europe’s premier club competition.

But that all changed last month thanks to the head of Milos Degenek, the Australia international’s 66th-minute header helping complete a stunning comeback from 2-0 down and sealing a decisive victory over Red Bull Salzburg on away goals in Austria.

Degenek represents the Socceroos on the world stage but the 24-year-old’s links to Serbia and Red Star run deep – he and his family fled the war-torn region in the 90s, relocating to Australia.

But having spent time in Germany with Stuttgart and 1860 Munich and with Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan up until July, Degenek is back in the Serbian capital.

“It’s very hard to put into words. It was probably a lot of relief. Like a big stone fell off your heart and chest,” Degenek told Omnisport as he discussed the moment his looping header found the back of the net at Red Bull Arena, where more than 10,000 Red Star fans descended, on August 29. “I came to Red Star, I could’ve stayed in Japan and played there. I was in the best XI last season. I could’ve stayed and played maybe the next 10 years there. But my dream was to come back to Europe.

“Obviously coming to Red Star, I knew the road to the Champions League wasn’t going to be easy. I knew it was going to be almost mission impossible. It was going to be one of the hardest things to do. But we as a squad, we believed in that very much and that’s what got us over the line.

“That’s why that goal meant so much. Pure relief, joy and satisfaction that we achieved something that’s been long overdue here.”

While Degenek spent time away from Serbia, Red Star was never too far away – the red and white-striped jersey worn with pride in the streets of Sydney.

Degenek, having turned a childhood dream into reality, knows what it means to represent Red Star. “This club is not big financially. It doesn’t have the wages of the English, Spanish, Italian clubs. But this club has a fan base that’s spread all over the world,” he said.

“Of course the Manchester United’s, Barcelona’s and Real Madrid’s they have the most fans. The population of Germany is 80 million and 60 million support Bayern Munich. But when you put the population of Serbia, where it’s five, six, seven million, across the whole world, from that seven million, to be honest, five and a half support Zvezda. Knowing that, this club is huge.

“I think if we had a stadium that held 150,000, this stadium would be sold out and there would be another 100,000 people waiting outside. That’s what it means to the people. Now I can’t walk down the street without someone congratulating me, whether that’s a person who is 60 years old, eight, 15 or a woman or whatever. There isn’t one person who doesn’t stop you to say you’ve done something we’ve been dreaming of for 26 years. Hopefully, this will spark something big.”

Article continues below

Red Star’s reward for qualifying for the Champions League is a Group C starting berth alongside last season’s finalists Liverpool, Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain and Italian side Napoli.

Degenek and his team-mates, however, are not daunted by what’s ahead in Group C: “We’re not going into this wanting to just have fun and enjoy the experience. We actually want to go and do things. People didn’t believe we’d get into the Champions League. People didn’t believe Zvezda were going to stand on their feet again after the past 10 or so years but things turn out better than what you expect sometimes.”

“We know it’s a long way to the top,” he continued. “There’s photos in the club of the European Cup. There’s photos when they beat Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern. There’s photos of every major game in and around the changerooms. That’s a big thing because you know you’re walking into a club that was a European and world champion. You know you’re walking into the club where some of the great players – Savicevic, Stankovic, Mihajlovic, Pancev, Prosinecki – played. These are players who made impacts in European and world football, not just in Serbia. It’s a big thing.”
