Lloris to remain Spurs captain despite drink-driving sentence – football news

Hugo Lloris will remain Tottenham’s captain despite pleading guilty to drink-driving in court on Wednesday, manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed.

The World Cup winner was stopped in his Porsche Panamera by police in the early hours of August 24 and provided a sample containing 80 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, more than twice the legal limit in England and Wales.

He was given a 20-month driving ban and fined £50,000 at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Some fans and pundits called for Lloris to be stripped of the Spurs captaincy following his guilty plea, but Pochettino does not feel it necessary to take the armband off him.

When asked in his news conference for Saturday’s clash with Liverpool if Lloris will still be captain, Pochettino said: “Of course.”

Nevertheless, Pochettino is adamant Lloris – who will miss Spurs’ next game due to a thigh problem – has seen the error of his ways and accepts the punishments that have been handed down to him.

“Of course, he’s the first that regrets everything, and all that happened yesterday is not good,” Pochettino said.

“Of course, he doesn’t feel great. He said he was guilty of this situation and it’s irresponsible.

“He’s a man, but I think the most important thing is everyone can make a mistake. He made a mistake and he’s suffering all the punishment of society.

“He’s punishing himself, but of course we’re not God, that we can judge people. He understands that it was a mistake.

“Then, we’re all men and women and we can all make mistakes. That is a massive lesson for everyone.

“He’s the first [to accept it was a mistake], he told me, ‘Gaffer, it’s a massive lesson for me. I made a mistake and now I need to pay’. Like the man that he is, he’s going to pay and accept everything.”

Aubameyang, Elneny return ahead of Arsenal clash with Newcastle United – football news

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mohamed Elneny have rejoined Arsenal ahead of their Premier League game against Newcastle United on Saturday.

The former Borussia Dortmund player was on target to earn a point for Gabon against Burundi during the African Cup of Nations qualifying outing.

The 29-year-old was, however, not part of the team that faced Zambia in Tuesday’s friendly game after teaming up with his club.

Also, Elneny played a key role as Egypt thumped Niger 6-0 at the weekend, scoring one of the goals in the encounter.

The Gunners confirmed the arrival of both players alongside Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Aaron Ramsey and Lucas Torreira who were on international duty.

“A number of our international stars returned to north London,” read a statement on club website.

“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mohamed Elneny, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Aaron Ramsey and Lucas Torreira were all present after playing for their countries last week.”

Arsenal are ninth in the league log with six points from four games and will be aiming to nick the maximum points against the Magpies.

Fantasy Football: What to do with your struggling players – football news

We often talk about superstars and “must owns” in Fantasy. Obviously, you have to spend big money to get the best Fantasy players into your team. The downside of that is having to figure out what to do when big name or big price players aren’t delivering the goods for your team. To that end, today we will be discussing a player at each position that has underperformed thus far, and if they will break out of their slump soon, or continue to struggle.

Goal-Fantasy-Football-StartPlayingNow

FOR: Gabriel Jesus – Manchester City, £7.9m, 11 points

There were always going to be questions about Jesus’ playing time with Sergio Aguero clearly the starter, but he’s carved out a decent role for himself. Despite playing over an hour just once this season thus far, he still has managed to put eight shots on target – the second most in the league.

With that kind of shooting rate and the fact that Pep has seemingly gotten more comfortable playing with two up front, Jesus will surely find the net again sooner rather than later. The schedule looks kind over the coming weeks so buying in on Jesus now, while his stock is low, looks a prudent investment.

MID: Mesut Ozil – Arsenal, £7.2m, 6 points

In 2015-16, Ozil led the Premier League in both chances created (144) and assists (19). Since then, he’s declined in both of those categories year-on-year with last season’s totals (74 chances created, 8 assists) roughly half of his output from 15-16.

Mesut Ozil Arsenal Atletico Madrid Europa League

That trend has continued this season as in three starts he’s managed just three chances created and no assists, ranking him 117th and 70th respectively. An argument could be made that he’ll return to the mean and at least be a usable Fantasy option but, for now, he’s decidedly not.

DEF: Ben Davies – Tottenham, £6.3m, 3 points

Davies was one of the most popular defenders heading into the season, but his performances have already scared many owners away. Just three points through four matches is certainly not what people expected when they paid Davies’ premium price.

Ben Davies, Tottenham

Part of the issue is that, despite his seven assists last season, he really wasn’t as creative as people may have thought with just 4% of his crosses resulting in goals. With tactical switches and Danny Rose being reintegrated into the squad, Davies costs more than he’s worth.

GK: David De Gea – Manchester United, £6.5m, 9 points

Article continues below

At time of writing, De Gea is still the most owned goalkeeper in the Goal game, so plenty of people still have faith. He won the Golden Glove last season with 18 clean sheets, his highest total since joining Manchester United. As for this season, the defence in front of him is not great and, through four matches, the Spaniard has allowed seven goals already – 25 per cent of his 2017-18 total.

He has not looked great thus far but considering his talent level and upcoming opponents he may put up some solid Fantasy points. Whether or not you want to spend 6.5m on him is up to you.

‘Fatigue is an excuse’ – Son raring to go with Spurs – football news

Tottenham striker Heung-min Son says that a hectic schedule will not stop him from being a smash hit with the club this season.

The attacker, who netted 18 times last term for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, has just joined up with his club-mates following an intense summer of international football, in which he played with South Korea at the World Cup then helped them to win a gold medal at the Asian Games.

In winning that prize, he also ensured he would be exempt from military service.

However, it came at a cost as he played eight matches in 26 days, prompting fears that his packed diary could affect his form with Spurs.

For Son, though, it is not an issue.

“I think this summer has been like any other summer, except that I’ve had to travel a little more,” he said.

“I always tend to play a lot [in summers] and I am not the only one playing many minutes. Fatigue is an excuse.

“When I am playing for my country, there is not a single match that I can take lightly. I am a professional athlete. Especially with the big crowd that we had [against Chile], there’s absolutely no way I could even think about taking it easy.

“I may play poorly at times, but I’ll always try to give my best effort.”

Heung-Min Son Tottenham 2018-19

Tottenham have made a strong start to the Premier League season largely without the 26-year-old, who has been restricted to a 10-minute cameo against Newcastle on the opening day of the season. They won their opening three matches of the campaign before suffering a surprising reverse against Watford before the international break.

Article continues below

They will attempt to bounce back from that disappointment when they host Liverpool at Wembley this weekend, with Son available for the first time.

He may, however, be reduced to a role on the bench as Lucas Moura was named the Premier League’s Player of the Month for August.

Meanwhile, there are some doubts over the participation of goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris, who was fined £50,000 and banned from driving for 20 months after he was found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol on Wednesday.

Liverpool need Bayern Munich’s mentality to win titles – Shaqiri – football news

Xherdan Shaqiri thinks Liverpool need to develop a similar type of mentality to Bayern Munich if they want to win titles.

Liverpool reached the Champions League final last term, but ultimately went on to lose 3-1 to Real Madrid in that showpiece clash in Kiev.

It was their third defeat in a final since Jurgen Klopp took charge in 2015, after the Reds lost out in both the Europa League and EFL Cup in 2015-16. Liverpool’s League Cup triumph in 2012 remains their most recent trophy of any kind.

Although for many last term went down as an impressive one, as Liverpool produced some stunning football and Mohamed Salah broke records, they only managed to secure a fourth-placed finish on the final day of the Premier League campaign, finishing six points behind Manchester United and 25 adrift of champions Manchester City.

And Shaqiri, who joined from relegated Stoke City in pre-season, feels Liverpool are missing the mentality Bayern have.

“Liverpool need to have the goal to play for titles,” the former Bayern winger told reporters ahead of Saturday’s clash with Tottenham. “We are a big team – big teams have to have the goal to win titles.

“It’s difficult in the Premier League, because you have a lot of big teams, so competition is there. You need to have a really, really good season to compete.

“At Bayern they only have the mentality of winning titles. Liverpool are one of the biggest teams in the world.

Article continues below

“Last year they had a very good year. Sadly, they didn’t win a title, but now we try to make a step forward and win honours. That’s the most important goal now. To win titles.

“We need to keep working hard. We are still a young team. Every player wants to go forward and try to be better and to help this big club to be successful.

“To be successful you need to play for titles. That has to be our aim.”

‘He wasn’t a hard worker’ – Why Chelsea missed out on Mbappe – football news

At the tender age of 19, Paris Saint-Germain attacker Kylian Mbappe already has a pretty impressive CV.

The forward has two Ligue 1 titles to his name, lifted the Coupe de la Ligue and Coupe de France trophies, been crowned a European champion at Under-19 level and played a key role in France’s glorious and triumphant World Cup run in Russia this summer to cap off an outrageous start to what is destined to be a hugely successful career.

His particular skillset and winning mentality make him one of the most sought-after players on the planet and PSG’s decision to sign Mbappe for €180 million – after initially taking him on loan – now looks like a masterstroke.

He could very well have ended up elsewhere, though, with Chelsea passing up the chance to take him to Stamford Bridge well before his rise to prominence.

Much has been said and written about Mbappe’s love-affair with Real Madrid, but it was the Blues who first took a shine to the 2017 Golden Boy winner.

Indeed, in 2012, Chelsea’s former scout Serge Daniel Boga even brought him to the club’s Cobham training centre, where the attacker immediately impressed. The Premier League giants were keen to arrange a second trial but that did not go down well with the player’s mother.

Boga told GBP Sports: “Chelsea were the first ones to give him a trial. We did it before Real Madrid. I had a friend who worked for Nike, Denis Chantron, and when I was in France, we met and he said ‘Have you heard of this young boy called Mbappe? He plays for Bondy, this small club from the suburbs of Paris.’

“I said I hadn’t and he said ‘You have to watch him.’ I went there and watched him and I called him back straight away and I said ‘Listen, this boy is really something.’

“I told Chelsea about him and let them do their thing. I called everyone at Chelsea whom I dealt with, like Jim Fraser. I said ‘Listen, I have this kid you have to look at.

Kylian Mbappe PS

“I brought him over with his family. He was skilful, like he is now. He played against Charlton and won 7-0.

“After a week at Chelsea, we went into the office. We said ‘Listen, we appreciate what we saw from you but we have to invite you back for another trial and we’ll see after that.

“I remember what the mother said to this day. She spoke in French to Fraser and I was translating. She said to me, ‘Listen, my boy won’t be coming back. If they want him they have to take him now or in five year’s time they will be coming back to buy him for €50 million!’

“That’s what she said to me! I said, ‘No I can’t say that to them. It is too cocky for me.’

“She was right, though. It wasn’t even €50m but €180m that someone would pay. So, she knew the quality of her son and she was right.“

Mbappe met the likes of Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda during his time in London and was given a shirt with his name and the number 11 on it, but it would not lead to a transfer to London for the gifted youngster.

In hindsight, Chelsea erred badly in not signing Mbappe when they had the chance to do so, with concerns over the defensive aspect of his game prompting the Londoners to request a second trial six years ago.

“He was very skilful but in England they want to see the player track back and be a hard worker. At the time, he wasn’t a hard worker,” Boga added. “Defensively, he wasn’t there yet. When he got the ball, he was unbelievable, but without the ball, he didn’t work a lot.

Kylian Mbappe PS

“Chelsea wanted to see him again to see how he could improve on this. I think that’s why they asked him back. He did skilful things and dribbled well. So, maybe the things they wanted to see in the second trial was improved work on the defensive side.

“They should have signed him. To be fair, though, it is easy to say that now. But, at the time, Chelsea had a good squad.”

Boga was a semi-professional footballer himself and, after leaving Chelsea in 2014, he started his own football agency called Quality and Prestige Management Ltd (QPM Group), which is run with his partner Ahmed Cheraft.

The Ivory Coast-born football agent admits that Mbappe is the best player he has ever spotted at such a young age, but believes that he knows one or two now who could match him.

“I worked with Chelsea until 2014,” he stated. “After that I decided to stop in order to look after my players, my brother and a few others I knew at this time and I use my skills to work with young players.

Article continues below

“I think until now, Mbappe is the best player I have ever scouted. I am proud, very proud to see what he has become. When I see him play, I say, ‘Wow, my eyes were good!’

“He is the type of player that everyone wants to watch play. He has everything needed for a modern player. He is fast and in front of goal he is a killer. He has everything to remain one of the best players for 10 years.”

Unfortunately for Chelsea, their chance to sign Mbappe seems to have already long since passed.
