Nigeria got their 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign back on track after condemning Seychelles to a defeat at Stade Linite on Saturday.

Goals from Ahmed Musa, Chidozie Awaziem and Odion Ighalo saw the Super Eagles pick up their first win of the qualifiers, with debutant Samuel Kalu causing havoc to the Pirates defence.

Musa and Awaziem handed the visitors a two-goal advantage in the first-half and Ighalo added the third from the spot after one of Kalu’s numerous teasing runs was halted in the box.

The buildup to the game had seen Gernot Rohr deal with several disappointments with team captain John Obi Mikel and some key players ruled out through several injury concerns.

The German handler had to make four changes to the team that started against Argentina in their last outing, at the World Cup.

Awaziem came in as a surprise pick for the right-back spot, Ogenyi Onazi partnered Wilfred Ndidi at the base of the midfield, Bordeaux new signing Kalu handed his international debut and Ighalo was restored to lead the lines.

From the blast of the whistle, the Super Eagles, expectedly, directed proceedings with the East African minnows sat deep in blocks.

Much of the visitors’ threats came from the wings as stand-in skipper Musa and Kalu’s quick feet and directness caused troubles for Gavin Jeanne’s men.

In the 15th minute, Nigeria’s persistent paid off through Musa who let fly with a wicked left-footed volley, with the back of goalkeeper Dave Mussard burying the audacious effort.

Before the interval, Awaziem doubled the lead beating Mussard from a rebound after a clever Iheanacho free-kick hit the foot of the crossbar.

The Seychellois tried to distort the flow of the game with some ambitious attacking forays after the restart, but Rohr’s men retook dominance and they got a third from the penalty spot.

Ighalo sent the stocky shot-stopper the wrong way after livewire Kalu was upended in the area.

Jeanne’s men caused a few nervy moments for the three-time African champions’ backline and Musa came close to getting a second with his effort in the 72nd minute missing the target by whiskers.

Rohr suffered yet another blow as Awaziem was stretched off injured, however, it allowed Rotherham United defender Semi Ajayi make his international bow.

There was also time for Henry Onyekuru who came on in place of lively Kalu with few minutes to go as the Super Eagles mounted pressure on the hosts to see out the final minutes of the game.

As it stands, Nigeria are second in Group E with three points and the final standings for Round Two games would be decided after the conclusion of the other group game between South Africa and table-topper Libya.

Cazorla reveals his big Arsenal regret & Wenger’s amazing contract gesture – football news

Santi Cazorla has revealed his big regret at not being able to say goodbye to Arsenal’s supporters while also revealing Arsene Wenger’s special contract gesture.

The 33-year-old joined Villarreal in the summer having finally been able to return to action following a distressing two-year period on the sidelines after various injury complications.

The Spaniard was forced to undergo numerous gruelling surgeries in an attempt to be able to return to the football pitch again – a scenario that he had been told was unlikely at times during his time on the sidelines.

He is, however, now back playing again, and has started all three of Villarreal’s league games this season, but insists that he regrets the manner of his exit from the Gunners and how he couldn’t say a proper goodbye to the fans.

When asked if remaining at Arsenal beyond the summer had been an option, he told The Guardian: “No, they didn’t want to. They were very good, very honest. My idea was to do at Arsenal what I eventually did here [at Villarreal].

“I knew whoever was going to sign me would have to see me first: nobody just gives you a contract. Pre-season with Arsenal, let them see me, then we all decide. But they couldn’t wait to finalise the squad.

“They said they’d help any way they could otherwise. I understood it, respected it. I’m eternally grateful. The people love me there and I’ll always have a connection with Arsenal, so much affection.

“Not being able to say goodbye playing at the Emirates is like a thorn in my side. If I had to leave, I wanted it to be in front of the fans.”

Cazorla also revealed that former Arsenal boss Wenger gave him the chance to renew his contract in the 2016-17 season, even though the club knew he was going to be out for a lengthy period of time.

He added: “Arsene always supported me. He renewed my contract before the first operation, which was an incredible gesture.

“He called me in: ‘Santi, I’m going to give you the optional year. It’s here, sign it, have your operation with peace of mind.’ That helped me focus on my rehabilitation without fear. I’m eternally grateful for that.”

The former Gunners star also went into detail about the traumatic operations he underwent, with the injury having been exasperated during a 2016 Champions League meeting with Ludogorets.

He revealed: “Half-times killed me, because it got cold, I’d be crippled at the start of the second half and the pain got worse and worse. That night, I cried; it had become too much. I had to stop. Then the problems started.

“I picked it up in the operating theatre and then there was the fact that the wound was open. I’d work on the bike and a couple of stitches would come out.

“Because it was an open wound, bacteria can enter, so another bug gets in. At night, a yellow liquid would come out. Every time they sewed me up, it split again; more liquid.

“They did a skin graft but they didn’t see what was inside – the bacteria eating away, eating away. They never found out which bacteria it was.

“They’d said to me: ‘Don’t worry about playing football, concentrate on regaining a normal life, being able to play with your son or go for a stroll.’ But I didn’t attach too much importance to that because by then I’d already decided to come to Spain, where they told me completely different things.

“I’d got tired – I’d gone through two or three months of operations. I went to Vitoria the next day and that’s when they found the bacteria – two in the tendon and another in the bone.

“They didn’t know how much of the tendon the infection had eaten. Mikel [surgeon Mikel Sanchez] said: ‘I’m going to have to open you up until I find the tendon.’ They told me they’d have to open, open, open, open and when they did, they saw I had lost 10cm.

“I’d been lucky, they said, it could have been more. When he had to rebuild the tendon, he realised how bad a condition the bone was in. He could put his finger in it. It was like Plasticine. That’s even more dangerous.”

Griezmann: If Beckham wants me in Miami, I’ll go! – football news

Antoine Griezmann has confirmed he would move to Inter Miami if David Beckham wanted him to.

Beckham has set up the MLS franchise, which will begin playing competitively in 2020 .

Inter Miami’s name was revealed earlier this week , with rumours already circulating regarding who Beckham could target, with the ex-England captain boasting a fearsome contacts book.

And Griezmann has now revealed that he would be willing to move to America were he to be asked, though he says that Miami is not his only possible destination.

“If Beckham wants me in his club, then I’ll go,” he told L’Equipe . “I want to finish my career in the US. I don’t know yet if it’s going to be in Miami or Los Angeles.

“They are two great cities. I like the mentality and the show culture of the US.”

The 27-year-old is approaching his peak, but has already enjoyed a career that many would only dream of, winning the World Cup, the Europa League and the Spanish Super Cup, as well as scoring 113 goals in 213 games for Atleti.

Griezmann has also won 62 caps for France, scoring 24 goals, including a strike in the 4-2 victory over Croatia in the 2018 World Cup final.

He was helped at the tournament by the prodigious talent of Kylian Mbappe, PSG’s brilliant 19-year-old forward.

Mbappe lit up the world stage in Russia, scoring four goals, and was also on the scoresheet in the final.

And Griezmann believes that his strike partner can hit a half-century of goals in a single season, due to a positional change that has seen him become more of a striker instead of a winger.

“As he will be less glued to the line and more in position to score, with the experience he has, he can score 50 goals per season.”

Merseyside derbies are overhyped, says ex-Everton captain Neville – football news

Former Everton captain Phil Neville hated playing in Merseyside derbies against Liverpool, he has revealed.

The defender joined the Toffees from Manchester United in 2005, having won a plethora of trophies at Old Trafford.

Neville spent a total of eight years at Goodison Park, and was even assaulted during a game by a Reds fan, though he says the local clashes were “overhyped”.

“I hated Merseyside derbies, I really did. I thought they were overhyped,” he said on Sky Sports.

“I think a Manchester derby, we used to talk about from 48 hours before. Merseyside derbies were a week before.

“The masseur would put up on the wall ‘five more sleeps’. The next day ‘four more sleeps’, the next day ‘three more sleeps until the Merseyside derby’. It was the biggest game.

“We used to go into derby days full of confidence thinking we could compete but Liverpool always used to play the game.

Jamie Carragher Phil Neville Liverpool Everton

“We got too involved in trying to smash someone early on, fans saying you’ve got to die for the badge. It was the only game Everton wanted to win.”

David Moyes spent £3 million to sign Neville from United, and he was given the captain’s armband almost immediately.

And he admits that Moyes’ decision to make him skipper made it more difficult for him to settle in.

“They [the fans] hadn’t accepted me because after one month David Moyes made me captain,” he added.

“At the time I accepted it but, looking back, I shouldn’t have done.

“I should have got my feet under the table and waited six months but he wanted it done and he wanted it done straight away.

“I found it really tough as I wasn’t accepted by my team-mates. I was the teacher’s pet, I was Moyes’ little boy.”

Keisuke Honda-led Cambodia won’t force Cheng Hoe into making gameplan changes – football news

BY        ZULHILMI ZAINAL       Follow on Twitter

Malaysia’s next friendly opponents, Cambodia may have roped in Japanese star Keisuke Honda as their head coach, but that will not force Harimau Malaya head coach Tan Cheng Hoe into doing things differently this Monday.

Last month, the Cambodian FA announced Honda as its national team head coach, a somewhat unorthodox arrangement considering the fact that one week earlier, the 32-year old had just signed on to play for Melbourne Victory in the A-League.

The Cambodia-Malaysia friendly will be the Asian Cup-winner’s first match leading his new charges. Two days ago, he led his first training session in preparation for the encounter against Malaysia.

Speaking in the post-match press conference following their 2-0 friendly defeat to Chinese Taipei on Friday, Cheng Hoe remarked that the presence of Honda will not result in him planning for the match any differently.

“It’s a very important game for us, and it seems that my players are free from injury. It won’t be easy for them as the match is in two days’ time, and they need to be fresh mentally.

“Cambodia too have appointed Honda as their new coach, and they may be more motivated to play under him. But my players will be playing well, and we’ll keep the same momentum on Monday,” said the former Kedah boss when asked by a local journalist.

The match will be played at the Phnom Penh National Olympic Stadium, with kick-off time at 7.30pm Malaysian time.

Cheng Hoe’s charges have been drawn in Group A of the 2018 AFF Championship later this year, together with Cambodia. The past four encounters between the two teams have been won by Malaysia, with their most recent clash taking place in the 2016 edition of the competition.
