Arsenal scrape past Cardiff as Torreira shows why new boys need to start – football news

Arsenal spent £70m ($91m) on new players over the summer in what many expected to be an overhaul of the current playing squad. Key positions were strengthened from goalkeeper Bernd Leno coming in to defensive midfielder Lucas Torreira signing after an impressive World Cup with Uruguay.

Added to that, experienced defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos bolstered a weak looking backline which only had Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding and Konstantinos Mavropanos as the options at centre back.

The only new addition who didn’t have a full pre-season was Torreira due to his excursions in Russia, yet 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute for Matteo Guendouzi the combative 22-year-old provided a perfect assist for Alexandre Lacazette to secure a hard fought win at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Petr Cech’s attempted transformation into a ‘modern’ goalkeeper shows no sign of improving as the Czech shot stopper played a nervy pass minutes in the opening few minutes. The former Chelsea man continues to look shaky when called into action on the floor and head coach Unai Emery faces a decision whether to give Leno his first opportunity in an Arsenal shirt. Granit Xhaka provided an excellent assist for Shkodran Mustafi to head in the Gunners opener but his lack of concentration on the stroke of half time resulted in a misplaced pass and Cardiff scoring from the resulting attack. While the Swiss international cannot be blamed entirely for the Bluebirds’ equaliser, his inconsistency throughout last season resulted in a number of errors leading into goals – and they have yet to be ironed out.

Article continues below

At one point Greek defender Sokratis could be seen telling Cech to waste time with his goal kicks – a facet of play which the experienced players know all about. The ex-Dortmund defender was quoted as saying last week that Arsenal need to more clever with their defending and make professional fouls when required. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s excellent curled strike means he has now scored 11 goals since his Premier League debut in February, with only Mohamed Salah scoring more goals in the competition (15) than the Gabon star.

There are still too many naïve defensive mistakes happening in each game for Arsenal, although the equaliser from Victor Camarasa to make it 2-2 can go down as a fortunate bit of play for Neil Warnock’s men, with Harry Arter appearing to dive to win the free-kick. However, Lacazette justified Emery’s decision to play him in the same team as Aubameyang after striking into the roof of the net from Torreira’s deft assist.

Emery’s men secured the three points despite several nervy moments throughout the second half but it is surely only a matter of time before Torreira and Leno start in the Premier League. An away win before the international break is just the tonic for a side who only managed one victory on the road in the second half of last season.

Filipe Luis denies asking for Atletico Madrid exit – football news

Filipe Luis insists he never pushed for a move away from Atletico Madrid this summer.

The defender was heavily linked with a move to PSG throughout the transfer window, with the French champions keen to bolster their defence.

Despite the links, however, Atleti resolved to keep the Brazil international, with PSG instead signing Juan Bernat from Bayern Munich.

“Three weeks ago I arranged a meeting with the club to let them know about my situation,” he said, per AS.

“I was told that the club didn’t want me to leave – so I didn’t push the matter any further. I’m fine where I am here at Atletico.”

Filipe Luis endured an injury-hit season in 2017-18, but he still made 28 appearances for the club.

Article continues below

Indeed, he was subsequently included in Brazil’s squad for the World Cup, playing in victories over Serbia and Mexico.

Atleti have stuttered at the start of the Liga season, winning one, drawing one and losing one of their three games thus far, leaving them 11th, already five points behind leaders Real Madrid.

PSG, meanwhile, have been fine without the 33 year old, winning all four of their opening Ligue 1 games.

Lionel Messi Barcelona

Barca kicked off their Liga title defence in style two weeks ago by putting three unanswered goals past Alaves, but they were made to work much harder for the three points against Valladolid last weekend.

As they prepare to welcome Huesca to Camp Nou for the first time in a Liga fixture, Valverde is expecting another difficult match, noting the fact that the division newcomers have avoided defeat in their opening games.

Article continues below

“They are undefeated after playing at two tough stadiums like Ipurua and San Mames,” the Barcelona boss told reporters ahead of the game. “They will stand up to us and be looking to surprise us, because they’ll be coming into the game with enthusiasm.”

The hosts are adapting to the departure of club stalwart Andres Iniesta this season and Valverde deployed two different approaches against Alaves and Valladolid, using a 4-4-2 formation in the former and a 4-3-3 shape in the latter, though more or less the same personnel featured in both encounters.

There are a number of new additions who are still bedding in at Catalunya, including the likes of Arturo Vidal and Arthur, so the match against Huesca may offer Valverde another opportunity to experiment, with things set to intensify after the international break.

‘Kepa has all the attributes to be a top goalkeeper’ – Azpilicueta backs Chelsea stopper to continue improving – football news

Cesar Azpilicueta is happy that Chelsea brought in Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Club for £71 million ($92m) as he believes his new team-mate can become a ‘top goalkeeper.’

The 23 year old has been thrown in at the deep end by Maurizio Sarri, starting each of Chelsea’s first four Premier League games after being signed to replaced Thibaut Courtois.

His latest display against Bournemouth led to his second clean sheet in a Chelsea shirt, with Azpilicueta helping his compatriot to settle quickly at Stamford Bridge. The defender has been impressed by Arrizabalaga’s attributes and has tipped him to become one of the best in the world.

“He’s a young goalkeeper, a top man, and I know him very well from the national team,” Azpilicueta told Chelsea’s match day programme. “He is very talented and has a great personality and I think the only way he can go is up.

“He will keep on improving, he has a lot of his career ahead of him and I was very happy when he signed here because he can give a lot to this team. He can play with his feet, he can manage and control the defensive line and he is very agile and mobile on the line, so I think he has all the attributes to be a top goalkeeper.”

Sarri will soon decide who will become his Chelsea captain, as Gary Cahill is not currently an automatic starter for the Blues. Azpilicueta has captained Chelsea in each of Sarri’s games, with Cahill not even making the match day squads.

Article continues below

Azpilicueta admits that captaining the side is something that he is proud of, especially after reaching 200 Premier League games with Chelsea.

“I am really proud to wear the captain’s armband and to lead the team,” Azpilicueta added. “I always try to help my team-mates and the club, but I’m more happy about it when we win the games at the end.

“It’s true that to have the armband is something I am really proud of, but I always try to do my work as well as possible.”

Burnley vs Manchester United: TV channel, live stream, squad news & preview – football news

Two loss out of three opening fixtures is not the way in which Jose Mourinho envisioned his third season at Old Trafford to go, and Manchester United could be in danger of losing a spectacular third game in a row if they fail to recover against Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.

The Red Devils will need to regain confidence following an abysmal 3-0 home loss to Tottenham and a 3-2 loss to Brighton to leave them languishing in 13th place in the table.

Burnley will also have added incentive to win the fixture as they are also off the backs of two successive losses – to Watford and newly promoted Fulham.

Alexis Sanchez Manchester United 2018-19

Mourinho’s terrible week started at the 3-0 home loss to Tottenham (which marked his worst ever home defeat) and has seemed to be on a downward spiral throughout the opening weeks of the season.

Following his clashes with the Manchester United board due to their inability to supply him with the players he wanted to sign in the summer, the Portuguese manager was subjected to a shock loss away to Brighton and then a devastating defeat at Old Trafford to Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

The press conference that ensued seemed to perfectly encapsulate the mayhem in which he has been embroiled with at Man United this season – stating that he demands ‘respect’ due to having won three Premier League titles despite losing by a scoreline of 3-0 at home.

Article continues below

In his most recent press conference, Mourinho cited philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel in his latest bizarre rant.

The Red Devils will need to bounce back fast and hard if they want to continue to remain in the race to challenge for the title, as their rivals Man City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea already occupy the top half of the table.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley will be disappointed following their exit from the Europa League after failing to beat Olympiakos, and are yet to register a win this season in the Premier League after drawing to Southampton on opening day.

What does the next decade hold for the Man City model? – football news

What next for Manchester City? Both on the pitch and off it, they are in an enviable position. Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, contracted for another three seasons, City can hope for more of the stylish, record-breaking football that delivered the fifth league title.

And having become self-sufficient as a business, turning a profit every season since 2014-15, the possibilities for City and its affiliated clubs across the world are endless.

But while the club says it has quadrupled its global fan base since 2010, Guardiola’s team will have to continue winning titles if they are to attract even more new fans and usher in the next major phase of the Abu Dhabi era.

City’s decision makers insist they do not want to spend £200m on one player – despite the fact that they could quite easily manage it – and that is the approach to future development projects.

“We have planning permission to expand the Etihad Stadium, we will see the stadium expand at some point, where that is in the next 10-year journey is just not possible to say,” says Pete Bradshaw, director of infrastructure and estates. “We’ll expand it when it’s the right thing to do for our football club, for our fans and our business, it has to meet the whole criteria of getting things right, we’re not going to expand the stadium for the sake of it.”

Instead, more modest projects are in the works for the acres of land around the Etihad; Manchester Metropolitan University will build a new faculty next to the stadium that will bring 3,000 full-time students to the area. City are also redeveloping the Ashton Canal route that links the stadium to the city, building or converting old mills into new apartments and freshening up an area that has fallen into disrepair.

It is a similar story in terms of global outlook; while many had expected a big CFG push into China, to either acquire or launch a brand new club, the realities have been different.

“If you look at the Chinese Super League, it went through a period of high inflation and enormous investment in player transfers, which brought up the valuation of clubs to numbers that we felt weren’t realistic, and we started looking at alternative ways,” Omar Berrada, chief operating officer, says. “It’s a market we are present in, we just haven’t made the level of investment that we have made, for example, in New York.”

City quote

Berrada says the club are “open” to a New York-style expansion into a new territory, but only in the right conditions.

These new ventures are designed to develop local communities as well as to make money and spread the word of the CFG, and ultimately City.

“We used to laugh and joke when you used to see all the Scandinavians at Liverpool and a lot of tourists at United taking photographs,” says Kevin Parker, general secretary of the official supporters’ club. “We used to say that will never be us but the reality was they never wanted to come and see us because we weren’t successful. Now they’re part and parcel of what happens.”

The pursuit of new fans poses challenges; not only in attracting and retaining their support, but doing so without overlooking, or at least annoying, loyal fans that have been going to games for decades.

City’s determination to break new ground – they have an Official Robot Partner, the only one in football – opens them up to brickbats from rival fans and sometimes their own.

The club strives to offer supporters new services and opportunities, including the ‘City Square’ entertainment zone outside the stadium on matchdays and free wi-fi throughout the Etihad, and are currently in the midst of improving their communication with supporters regarding a range of issues. Yet for many fans, all of that is undone when ticket prices go up.

City quote

Prices rose again in May but many fans did not complain because of the relatively small amounts involved. Others, however, asked why such a profitable club needs to put prices up at all, especially if it’s a couple of pounds per game. Is it that simple?

“It isn’t,” Berrarda says. “I think you have to look at the wider view of our ticket pricing. We still have the lowest season ticket price in the Premier League, we’ve had that £250 ticket since 2009-10, I think since then only once we didn’t have the lowest price, when Stoke was £5 cheaper.

“We also need to continue growing, we need to continue also ensuring that the costs, which have an organic inflation rate, are covered, but we are utterly convinced that what we put for the fans in terms of the ticket prices but also in terms of the football, it’s definitely the best price:quality ratio in the Premier League.

“I do think we are where we should be and our fans understand that.”

Article continues below

Certainly, as long as City keep winning with style there will be few complaints, no matter the issue.

“A friend of mine went to the Huddersfield game and had an issue getting a pie or a pint,” Parker says. “She likes to complain but we won 6-1 so she said she wouldn’t be complaining because it was so good! She would have complained if we’d lost 2-1! That’s the nature of football fans.”

And if City do continue winning with style, the City Football Group will surely be set for another successful decade.

Mbappe is going to see many reds this season if he continues like that – Savanier – football news

Paris Saint-Germain prodigy Kylian Mbappe is destined to see “many” red cards this season, according to Nimes midfielder Teji Savanier.

The pair clashed in stoppage time of Saturday’s Ligue 1 meeting at Stade des Costieres, with both men dismissed in the closing moments of PSG’s 4-2 success.

Mbappe has refused to be repentant regarding the incident, which came about after he was tackled hard by the home player.

“The same foul when there was an intention to play the ball, that’s no problem, but he didn’t have that and we all so it,” the teenager said. “It’s an action that doesn’t have a place on the field.”

Savanier, however, has taken a differing viewpoint.

“For me, it wasn’t malicious, that’s just his perception,” he said. “I’m going to look at the images and the League will look at them too. They’ll see that I wasn’t trying to injure him or break his leg. It’s my knee that hit his foot.

“I didn’t see it coming. I was surprised when he reacted like that.”

Mbappe said that he would happily react in the same way again, prompting an interested reaction from his adversary.

“Ah really? If he continues like this, he’s going to see a lot of red cards this season,” Savanier said, admitting that he felt the striker was tetchy throughout.

“When he was booked in the first half, it’s because he spoke back to the referee. I’ve never seen him speak to the referee like he did when I’ve watched him on TV. I think he’s going to regret it.

“It’s something I regret because I’m going to be suspended for the next few games.”

Mbappe will definitely miss PSG’s home fixture against Saint-Etienne on September 14, while Ligue 1’s Disciplinary Commission will meet to decide if his dismissal merits an additional ban.

VIDEO: What the duck? Fowl pitch invasion can’t save Ibrahimovic’s LA Galaxy – football news

Real Salt Lake’s MLS encounter with LA Galaxy had a rather unusual interlude, as security staff were left in a flap by a duck that had wandered onto the park.

As the home team prepared to take a corner with the score tied 11 after 32 minutes, the bird decided to take a closer gander at what all the fuss was about. It flew onto the field and showed a surprising turn of pace as it evaded marshals, with one particular dash down the wing impressive.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was one of the stars playing for the Galaxy at the time, is unlikely to have seen anything like it during his professional career.

It proved to be a fowl night for the visiting side, who were defeated 6-2.

The Galaxy had taken the lead in the first minute thanks to Jonathan dos Santos, but had been pegged back by Albert Rusnak by the time the duck invaded. Goals either side of half-time from Damir Kreillach and Jefferson Savarino put Real in command, while a three-strike burst in 10 minutes after the hour mark sealed the victory.

Victory allowed Real Salt Lake to fly to fourth in the Western Conference, while the Galaxy have dived to seventh and are in serious danger of missing the playoffs.
