Katlego Ntsabeleng leaves Kaizer Chiefs for USA’s Coastal Caroline Chanticleers – football news

After grabbing the attention of the masses during last season’s MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) and inaugural MultiChoice Diski Shield (MDS), Kaizer Chiefs starlet Katlego Ntsabeleng has earned himself a carrer-defining move to the United States of America (USA).

River Ntsabeleng, a father and the manager of the 21-year old marksman, confirmed that the player has inked a lucrative two-year deal with Coastal Caroline Chanticleers which represent Coastal Carolina University in the Sun Belt Conference.

According to Ntsabeleng senior, the former University of Johannesburg stundent also clinched a two-year scholarship which is expected to fall through should he fail to achieve positive results.

Elaborating on Katlego’s departure, Ntsabeleng said to Goal: “It all started at the time when South African-born Chanticleers assistant coach Kyle Timm attended one of Varsity Football Cup games where Katlego scored an astonished goal.”

“From that game, they started to follow his supreme technical ability which assisted the national side to secure a 2-1 victory over Lesotho in the final of the 2017 Cosafa Under-20 Championships,” he explained.

“I would like to pay my huge gratitude to Chiefs for believing in Katlego. I don’t have any doubts that soon he will overcome the challenges that come with being on foreign country. I also hope that he can keep making the fans happy,” said Ntsabeleng’s father.

Apart from being in the Chiefs MDC team, Katlego made an impression earlier this year, netting a crucial strike which saw his side record a 3-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns to lift the MDS Cup.

He also walked away with the man of the match award following his scintillating display on the day.

Katlego, who hails from Daveyton, is set to follow in the footsteps of Thabiso Khumalo, who joined the Coastal Carolina University side in 2016 from School of Excellence.

Another South African star that is playing in the US is Durban-born player Lindokuhle Mfeka, who last year made his Major League Soccer (MLS) debut for San Jose Earthquakes.

‘Chelsea told me I would play!’ – Abraham explains why he snubbed ‘a lot of teams’ – football news

Tammy Abraham claims to have snubbed “a lot of teams” before joining Aston Villa on loan because Chelsea had assured him he would see regular game time this season.

The England international headed for the exits at Stamford Bridge on the deadline day for Football League deals after seeing his path blocked in west London.

He had returned to his parent club over the summer looking to make a positive impact after impressing with Swansea in 2017-18 – with those efforts earning him senior recognition with the Three Lions.

It quickly became apparent, though, that Maurizio Sarri would not be giving him as many minutes as he had hoped, with a last-minute move required after turning down interest from across Europe.

Abraham told Villa’s official website: “It started off from the end of last season where Chelsea did say I’d be involved in their team and squad.

“That’s the reason why I said no to a lot of teams that came from abroad and the Premier League as well, but towards the end, I found that I need to play games and need to play football, and looking at a team like Aston Villa, who I believe should be in the Premier League, it’s a great chance for me to come out and showcase myself here.

“It’s a situation where I want to be in a team where I believe strongly in the team and just be in a good environment enjoying myself again.

“Hopefully that can be this place and I can take them to the Premier League.”

Abraham has also revealed that England U21 team-mate Jack Grealish and Chelsea legend John Terry – who spent the 2017-18 campaign with Villa – helped to talk him into a move to the Championship club.

The 20-year-old frontman added: “I’ve had players like Jack Grealish who have been messaging me every day telling me to come.

Article continues below

“It’s nice to have someone that you know here. It helped make up my mind a couple of days ago.

“John Terry was also one of the first people to call me about the move. He said what a great place it was and how much he loved his time here.

“He said how much I’d like the manager and the players. I believe him and I’ve already enjoyed my first afternoon in and around the place.”

Liverpool record Premier League first despite Alisson howler at Leicester – football news

Liverpool survived a rare mistake from Alisson against Leicester to record a Premier League first with their fourth successive win at the start of the campaign.

The Reds were tipped by many to mount a serious challenge for the top-flight crown in 2018-19.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have not been at their best so far, but they remain faultless heading into the first international break.

Twelve points have been collected from four fixtures to date, allowing the Reds to occupy top spot.

They have only been breached on one occasion, with £65 million ($84m) summer signing Alisson gifting Leicester a goal at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

The Brazil international has vowed to continue taking risks, and it was his reluctance to clear his lines which allowed Rachid Ghezzal to score for the Foxes.

Fortunately for him, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino had already found the target at the opposite end of the field.

Liverpool suffered a few scares from that point, but held on to record a 2-1 victory on the road.

Not since 1990-91 have they enjoyed such a productive opening, when Kenny Dalglish oversaw a surge out of the blocks.

Back then, they went on a run of eight successive victories to start the season.

Klopp will be eager to see his side do similar after winning four opening games for the first time in the Premier League era.

He will also want to emulate the efforts of the class of 1978-79 who went on to taste title glory after enjoying a similar early run.

Dalglish’s side failed to capture the crown despite setting the early pace, while in 1969-70 the Reds ended up finishing fifth after starting with maximum points from four games.

Back in the present and Liverpool’s international stars are now set to head off on duty with their respective countries, as domestic football takes a backseat.

The Reds will return to action on September 15 away at Tottenham.

That fixture will open a testing run for Klopp’s side which will also see them face Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli in the Champions League, Chelsea and Manchester City in the Premier League and the men from Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup third round.

I had to fight Celtic to make €22m Lyon move – Dembele – football news

Moussa Dembele has admitted that he had to fight hard to ensure he made a deadline day move to Lyon from Celtic.

After two years in Scotland, where he won six trophies with Brendan Rodgers’ side, the Frenchman has moved back to his homeland, with OL having brokered a late €22 million (£20m/26m) deal with the Europa League hopefuls.

Dembele, though, has said he needed to battle with his previous employers to ensure his dream move went through before the close of the window, with the 22-year-old having apparently criticised his previous employers via social media.

“It was a certainty that I wanted to come to Lyon,” he said. “I was determined to come here and the Celtic board had to back down. It was hard. I gave everything and, finally, it paid off.”

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, meanwhile, was impressed with the desire the France Under-21 striker had to move to the club.

“I want to thank him because he’s talented and he’s shown determination to come here,” he said. “Without that, it would not have happened.

“Lyon has financial power that’s known all over Europe. Sometimes you have to use it. We had to be flexible and smart to finish negotiating and to reach an agreement with Celtic. I’m personally very happy, I’m satisfied and confident.”

Head coach Bruno Genesio, meanwhile, is looking forward to unleashing his new attacking weapon, who has arrived to replace Mariano Diaz, Cristiano Ronaldo’s replacement as Real Madrid’s No.7.

“He’s the type of player we don’t have in our team,” he said. “He’s a real No.9. We’ll need him, especially in the Champions League. He gives me more possibilities. He can play alone or with another forward by his side.

Article continues below

“His desire to come to the club really impressed me. He wanted to join our project after our first discussions with him.”

Dembele, whose spell at Celtic was hampered by hamstring injuries, scored 51 times in 94 outings in Celtic, having previously spent time in the youth ranks of Paris Saint-Germain and Fulham.

Lyon, meanwhile, suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to Nice on Friday.

Mourinho: Ronaldo will want to score on return to Man Utd – football news

Cristiano Ronaldo will return to Old Trafford with Juventus determined to “score goals and win the match”, says Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese superstar will be heading back to familiar surroundings during the group stage of the 2018-19 Champions League.

United have been reunited with a former favourite in that competition before, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner helping Real Madrid to a 3-2 aggregate victory at the last-16 stage in 2013.

Mourinho was in charge of the Blancos back then and the current Red Devils boss expects his fellow countryman to be in determined mood to find the target again on October 23.

He told United’s official website: “I think he [Cristiano] likes to come.

“My feeling when we played with Real Madrid here was that he was happy to come back and was happy to play at Old Trafford, but he was also happy to score and to win.

“He comes with a Juventus shirt, he went to Juventus to win the Champions League, he comes to Old Trafford to score goals and to win the match, but Old Trafford likes him and Old Trafford will always react in a positive way to him, which is a great thing.”

Before facing the considerable challenge posed by Ronaldo and Juventus, Mourinho is set to lock horns with another familiar face.

United have been drawn against Derby in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with that contest set to deliver a master versus apprentice encounter as former Chelsea star Frank Lampard goes head to head with a coach he enjoyed considerable success under at Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard Derby

Mourinho added on that clash: “I don’t think it’s strange, it’s nice.

“My first generation of players at Porto and Chelsea have finished their careers and many of them have become managers.

Article continues below

“Frank is the first that I’m going to play against and it’s not strange at all.

“He always wanted to be a manager. I think his objective is to win a top-two position in the Championship to be promoted, but of course we had Derby County last season in the FA Cup at Old Trafford and every team from the Championship that visits a Premier League team is always a special motivation for them.”

United will hope to have turned their season around by the time attention turns to cup action, with Mourinho taking his side to Burnley on Sunday looking to offer a positive response to back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.

Midfielders Mendy, Ndidi, Albrighton, Maddison, Gray, Amartey, Silva, Iborra, James, King, Choudhury
Forwards Iheanacho, Okazaki, Ghezzal, Diabate

Jamie Vardy is suspended for the game following a red card received against Wolves. Kelechi Iheanacho was given a starting berth against Southampton last week but drops to the bench for this clash, with Rachid Ghezzal coming into the team.

Additionally, Ricardo Pereira features in defence, having played further forward a week ago, and Marc Albrighton is back in the starting XI.

Meanwhile, Caglar Soyuncu is yet to make his first-team debut for Leicester after signing for the club in the summer, with manager Claude Puel hinting that the defender may be given some minutes for the club’s Under-23 side first.

Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Ricardo, Morgan, Maguire, Chilwell; Mendy, Ndidi; Alrighton, Ghezzal, Maddison; Gray.

Position Liverpool players
Goalkeepers Alisson, Mignolet, Kelleher
Defenders Clyne, Gomez, Van Dijk, Moreno, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Lovren
Midfielders Jones, Fabinho, Milner, Keita, Shaqiri, Wijnaldum, Markovic, Henderson
Forwards Sturridge, Firmino, Mane, Salah, Solanke

Klopp’s main injury concern is that of Dejan Lovren, who has yet to feature for Liverpool this season after recovering from a groin issue, which will mean Joe Gomez continues at centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk.

The German previously stated that a return to the fold for the Croatia international will be likely following the international break.

Only one change has been made to the starting XI, with Naby Keita replaced by Jordan Henderson in the heart of the park.

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk, Robertson; Milner, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane.

Match Preview

Harry Maguire Leicester City

Liverpool were far from their exhilarating best against Brighton last week when they edged out a 1-0 win, with Mohamed Salah slotting in the only goal in the first half.

Klopp’s side have already been named as a potential title challenger to Manchester City following their statement of intent in the summer transfer window, signing the likes of goalkeeper Alisson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Three wins after three games is Liverpool’s best start to a league season since the 2013-14 season, where they finished as runners-up, and though they didn’t score the surplus of goals they were expected to against Brighton, it was slip-ups against ‘lower table’ teams that were Klopp’s Achilles’ heel last season.

Article continues below

The Reds managed to beat Leicester both home and away in the Premier League last season in narrow victories – 3-2 at the King Power Stadium and then 2-1 at Anfield.

Klopp has named the same starting XI in his first three Premier League games and may be tempted to switch his formation, after hinting that his players were still gaining match-fitness and needed time to regain their form.

Xherdan Shaqiri may be in contention to make his first start as a Liverpool player against the Foxes, while captain Jordan Henderson may be given the nod ahead of James Milner after an extended holiday following World Cup duty with England.

How Son Heung-min can be exempt from South Korea military service – football news

There is much more than just a gold medal at stake for Tottenham star Son Heung-min when heads into the Asian Games final against Japan on Saturday.

The South Korea winger headed into the tournament with the threat of military service looming, but he can avoid that fate and return to Premier League action with Spurs as a national hero if he helps his side to victory.

As one of three players over the Under-23 age limit, the former Bayer Leverkusen player has taken on a key role at the tournament in Indonesia after an impressive World Cup.

And so, having already represented South Korea in Russia, why has Son had to miss out on the Premier League season to have a chance of avoiding military service? Goal brings you all you need to know.

How can Son be exempt from military service?

The Asian Games began on August 10 and conclude with the final between South Korea and Japan at the Pakansari Stadium in Cibinong on Saturday.

South Korean men are required by law to start participating in military service by the age of 27, typically for a duration of 21 months.

As Son is 26 years old, he would have to enrol in the military within the next year.

However, there are exeptions for athletes who win gold in the Asian Games.or any medals at the Olympics, meaning the Spurs forward would be excused from the service if he were to finish in first place with South Korea during this year’s continental tournament.

Heung-Min Son Tottenham 2018-19

“I should obviously say sorry,” Son told Goal. “I’ll be away from the team for quite some time, so I want to say sorry to the manager and my team-mates.

“I’m sure my team-mates will be able to fill the void sufficiently, but I still feel sorry about having to leave the team during the season.

“So it’s obviously important for me to prepare myself to sacrifice for the team as soon as I return [from the Asian Games].”

Apart from a 10 minute run out in the opening game against Newcastle, Son has been absent from Tottenham’s Premier League campaign so far because of his national team duty.

However, he is just one game away from making the trip back and will avoid a much bigger disruption to his career if he returns with a gold medal around his neck.

He is confident of doing so, however, and is happy to have the support of his Tottenham team-mates heading into the decider.

“Ben Davies (Spurs’ left back) constantly told me ‘Good luck’ before I left for the Asiad. I intend to return to the club with a gold medal,” he said.

“We know the final will not be easy. The manager and I keep reminding the team that we have to play in the final as well as we did in our first match.

“I know I have to lead by example. Most of the team are younger than I am, but I am willing to do what it takes for the sake of the team.”

Son Heung-Min South Korea Germany World Cup 2018

There are five rounds to the Asian Games, beginning with a group stage and then the knockout phases including the last 16 stage, quarter-finals, semi-finals followed by the gold and bronze medal matches.

This year’s edition of the competition has already begun with an eventful start, with the organisers having had to re-do the draw after omitting a couple of teams during the initial draw.

The good news for Son is that South Korea remain in the competition and remain in with a solid chance of winning.

Having come through a five-team group containing the likes of Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia and Bahrain, they defeated Iran in the last 16 before seeing off Uzbekistan 4-3 in the quarter-finals.

Article continues below

After beating the Uzbeks, Son and Co. put three past Vietnam in the semi-finals to set up the decisive clash with Japan, who got the better of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.

There is a lot riding on the game for both teams, but it is one which could heavily impact Son over the next year.

Sarri backs ‘clever and intelligent’ Bournemouth boss Howe to go far – football news

When Eddie Howe strides out to take his place in the away dugout at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri will need no introduction to his Bournemouth counterpart.

As he crafted a reputation as one of the brightest coaches in the English game in the early years of his career, Howe sought then-Empoli boss Sarri’s advice on how to get an underdog punching above their weight.

The Italian was initially a little perplexed but the two stayed in touch and Bournemouth played out a 2-2 draw with Sarri’s Napoli in a pre-season friendly last year.

“I asked him, ‘why Empoli?’ and he told me he was studying all the little clubs in Italy and France at the time and he was impressed with Empoli,” Sarri explained.

“Yes, I was surprised. I knew that Bournemouth, in this period, were winning the Championship. I didn’t know him or the players, but I knew the situation.

“When I was 40 [Howe’s age] I was with a non-professional team [Tegoleto] in Italy’s Serie D. I’m not surprised that Eddie has got to where he has because he’s very clever and very intelligent.

“I think he is ready. He is 40, but he is ready. Probably, when I was 40, I wasn’t ready.”

The 59-year-old Sarri has since exchanged occasional messages with Howe, whose Bournemouth have seven points from a possible nine this term.

They could present a stern challenge to Chelsea’s 100 per cent record – especially in light of their 3-0 win in west London last season.

Article continues below

“I didn’t see the match, so I don’t know,” Sarri said, apparently in no mood for bad omens.

“But, as I said before, they are a dangerous team. In the defensive phase, they are very organised. If they have the possibility to have space, they are very dangerous on the counter-attack.

“They attack the space very well in the right time, so they are very dangerous. If you don’t play very well, with a high level of attention, it’s easy to lose games against them.”
