  • Norway secure place at next year’s U-20 World Cup
  • Qualified with 3-0 win over England at UEFA U-19 Championship
  • U-20 World Cup holders England will not defend their title in Poland

Norway booked Europe’s last ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland 2019 after they defeated England 3-0 in the play-offs at the UEFA Under-19 Championship Finland 2018.

Three second-half goals saw the Norwegians beat the U-20 World Cup holders and qualify for the global finals at that age level for the first time since 1993. Erik Botheim scored the opening goal in the 75th minute before strikes from substitute Eman Markovic and Jens Petter Hauge sealed the victory for coach Pal Arne Johansen’s side.

The result means U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017 champions England will not get a chance to defend their world title at the age level.

Norway will be joined by fellow European sides France, Italy, Portugal, Ukraine and hosts Poland at next year’s world finals, which will take place from 23 May to 15 June 2019.

#RivalHug winners savour World Cup Final experience – FIFA on GBP Sports

  • #RivalHug campaign connected fans during the World Cup
  • 9,357 submissions were made, reaching 152.5 million people worldwide
  • Six winners were chosen for an exclusive trip to the World Cup Final in Moscow

No other sporting event on earth connects fans of all races, genders, age groups and nationalities like the FIFA World Cup™. That was especially the case during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, as our omni-channel fan campaign #RivalHug united football supporters around the globe.

During football’s showpiece event, fans captured their personal moments with another fan from a rival team and shared it with the #RivalHug campaign on their social media feeds. A total of 9,357 submissions reached 152.5 million fans worldwide, with the #RivalHug hashtag used 26,240 times. There was also a Hug Counter booth at the FIFA Fan Fest™ in Moscow, where a total of 14,005 fans took pictures and received a #RivalHug branded photo printout.

The popularity of the #RivalHug campaign drew attention from various international media outlets, with the most shared story coming from six-year-old Poland fan Aleks Meiklejohn on Twitter, who was consoled by his Colombia counterparts after the South American side’s 3-0 victory over the Poles in the group stage on 24 June.

Accompanied by his father Iain, the Scottish youngster was one of six #RivalHug submission winners that brought a guest on an exclusive trip to the World Cup Final between France and Croatia. They were joined by fellow winners Keke Pu and her boyfriend from China PR, Qatar-based Mexico fan Yezenia Navarro and her son Alan, Russian football fans Polina Anufrieva and Mikhail Samsonov, as well as Argentina fan Mauro Martinez Beloqui, who drew notable attention for swapping numerous Albiceleste and Lionel Messi jerseys with rival fans and sharing those exchanges on Instagram.

Witnessing the Final at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on 15 July proved an unforgettable experience for our campaign winners. “I am very grateful to FIFA for this opportunity, a dream come true,” said Navarro. “I also appreciate the opportunity to have met the other winners of #RivalHug and other contests, because now I can say that I have friends in more parts of the world united by the passion of the World Cup.”

“I have to agree entirely with what Yezenia has said – both me and Aleks had the most amazing time in Moscow for the World Cup Final,” said Iain Meiklejohn. “We still can’t believe we were actually there, at the match. And what a match – six goals! And, of course, the people we met really made the trip even better! Natalie, Jennifer, Ernesto, Yezenia, Alan, Mauro, Mike, Diana, Maya and Anita – it would be absolutely amazing if we could all meet up in Qatar 2022.”

Tite signs on for four more years – FIFA on GBP Sports

Tite is set to be Brazil coach throughout their 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ campaign, after the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced on Wednesday a four-year contract renewal for the 57-year-old.

After being appointed in 2016, Tite helped Brazil to a series of impressive results during qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, only for the five-time world champions to suffer a quarter-final exit in Russia with a 2-1 defeat against Belgium.

“The CBF is investing in a long-term project by guaranteeing the Technical Commission six and a half years in charge of the national team, and we believe that careful planning and judicious execution will lead Brazilian football to the results we expect,” said Rogerio Cabocio, Executive Director of the CBF.

Hungarian football is mourning the loss of iconic commentator and former Hungarian Football Federation President Gyorgy Szepasi, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 95.

A life-time servant to sport, who reported on his first game in 1945, he would go on to serve on the FIFA Executive Committee from 1982-94, as well as heading his national federation for eight years until 1986. He was awarded the FIFA Order of Merit in 2012 for his services to the game.

He became a much-loved figure in Hungary over a record-breaking broadcasting career, with his 60 years at the microphone – capped off in 2005 – and coverage of 14 FIFA World Cups for radio are achievements unparalleled across the globe.

Such was his treasured position with fans as he reported on Hungary’s exploits on the pitch around the globe, he was dubbed the ‘Golden Team’s twelfth player’ following their 6-3 win over England in 1963 – a match known at the time as the ‘Match of the Century’.

“It was thanks to this that I was able to be on this incredible journey, because if there was a twelfth player, it would surely have been head coach Gusztav Sebes and everyone who really contributed to the successes,” he said in response. “I think this title is a little exaggerated but if they’ve already given it – and I’m not being disingenuous here – I respectfully give my thanks.”
