Pavard’s stunner voted Hyundai Goal of the Tournament – FIFA on GBP Sports

The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ treated football lovers to 169 goals in 64 matches – and fans around the world have chosen Benjamin Pavard‘s as the best of the tournament.

In an online poll where over three million FIFA.com users casted their votes, Pavard’s outside-of-the-foot rocket for France against Argentina, in which the 22-year-old displayed marvellous technique, has been voted the Hyundai Goal of the Tournament.

The goal selected by FIFA.com users was France’s equaliser against Argentina in the Round of 16, which levelled the game at 2-2 as Les Bleus went on to record a 4-3 victory in Kazan and book their place in the quarter-finals.

VISUAL STORY: Perfect Pavard

“The ball bounced up as it came to me. I didn’t even think about it. I just tried to get over it and keep it down,” Pavard told FIFA.com after France’s Round of 16 thriller with Argentina. “I was trying to hit it in the direction it came from, which is what the strikers always tell me. I didn’t think it over, and when it went in I just felt so happy.”

Pavard’s goal saw off stiff competition to win the accolade, including Juan Quintero’s delightful low free-kick for Colombia against Japan in the group stage which finished second, and Luka Modric’s long-range stunner against Argentina, also in the group stage, which came third in the voting.

Pavard becomes the first European player to win the Goal of the Tournament accolade since its creation in 2006. At Brazil 2014, it was bestowed on eventual adidas Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez, whose venomous, dipping volley also later earned him the 2014 FIFA Puskas Award. Other previous winners include Maxi Rodriguez (ARG) and Diego Forlan (URU) winning in 2006 and 2010 respectively.

Thank you to all the fans who took part in the online voting!

As France and Uruguay gear up to host this year’s FIFA U-20 and U-17 Women’s World Cups, respectively, FIFA has today launched the bidding process for the 2020 editions of both competitions.

FIFA’s member associations will have until 24 August 2018 to declare their interest in hosting the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2020 and/or the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2020 by submitting the completed and duly executed declaration form to FIFA.

FIFA will send by 31 August 2018 the bidding and hosting documents to those member associations that have declared an interest, with member associations having until 28 September 2018 to re-confirm their interest by submitting the signed terms and conditions.

18 January 2019 will be the deadline for the respective member associations to submit their definitive bids, including all signed bidding and hosting documents (hosting agreement, host city agreements, government guarantees, etc.). The hosts of both the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2020 and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2020 are expected to be appointed by the FIFA Council in the first quarter of 2019 (a different host will be appointed for each competition).

Since its launch in 2002, the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup has become a springboard for some of the most talented players in the women’s game, as confirmed by the list of adidas Golden Ball winners: Christine Sinclair (2002), Marta (2004), Ma Xiaoxu (2006), Sydney Leroux (2008), Alexandra Popp (2010), Dzsenifer Marozsan (2012), Asisat Oshoala (2014) and Hina Sugita (2016).

The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup has been played since 2008 and the list of adidas Golden Ball winners also features some of the finest players of recent years, such as Mana Ibawuchi (2008), Yeo Min-ji (2010), Griedge Mbock Bathy (2012), Hina Sugita (2014) and Fuka Nagano (2016).

“The fact that the previous editions of the FIFA U-20 and U-17 Women’s World Cups have featured such talented players is not a mere coincidence,” said FIFA’s Chief Women’s Football Officer, Sarai Bareman. “Both competitions play a key role as part of FIFA’s objective to promote women’s football around the world and to give young talent a world-class setting to play against the best in their age group. For the host country, it’s also a unique opportunity to further develop women’s football at different levels thanks to the tournament legacy, starting from infrastructure, grassroots and media awareness.”

The Olympic flame of the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 was lit on Tuesday 24 July at a ceremony held at the Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens, the venue of the inaugural Olympic Games of the modern era in 1896.

Futsal has a prominent place on the Buenos Aires 2018 programme, with the Men’s Youth Olympic Futsal Tournament and the Women’s Youth Olympic Futsal Tournament taking place in the Argentinian capital on 7-18 October.

“The lighting of the flame today marks the start of Buenos Aires 2018,” said Gerardo Werthein, the president of the Buenos Aires 2018 Local Organising Committee, at the ceremony. “We will carry it with pride to the southern hemisphere, where we will light up the world with the inspirational message of Olympism and its values.”

In the two months leading up to the Youth Olympic Games the flame will travel 14,000 kilometres through Argentina, promoting the Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence.

South American youth cycling champions Valentina Munoz and Yoel Vargas carried the flame at the ceremony, accompanied by Argentinian cycling legend Walter Perez, a gold medallist at the Olympic Games Beijing 2008.

You can watch the ceremony in full below.
