Umtiti heads France into the Final – FIFA on GBP Sports

  • France book their place in their first World Cup Final for 12 years
  • Umtiti header sees of Belgium in well-fought encounter
  • Les Bleus to face England or Croatia on 15 July

Samuel Umtiti’s headed winner has returned France to the FIFA World Cup™ Final for the third time in 20 years, sealing a 1-0 win over Belgium in Saint Petersburg.

The first half saw chances at either end, with Belgium captain Eden Hazard going close before Hugo Lloris and Thibaut Courtois denied Toby Alderweireld and Benjamin Pavard respectively to ensure the opening period ended all square.

Having seen the best chances come from defenders, it was apt that a centre-half opened the scoring. After Raphael Varane performed heroics in the quarter-finals against Uruguay, this time it was Umtiti, stealing a march on his man to meet Antoine Griezmann’s corner at the near post and flick a header beyond Thibaut Courtois.

Once ahead, France locked down, robbing the Red Devils’ star names of space to pick through in the final third, grinding down the clock – while looking to strike on the counter – until their place in the Moscow finale was confirmed.

Team reporter analysis
Adrien Gingold, with France [Follow on Twitter]
France continue their brilliant showing as they avoided falling into Belgium’s trap. After the Red Devils had dominated the first half, largely thanks to an awesome Eden Hazard, France took responsibility and controlled the match in the second. Didier Deschamps’s team has many faces to it, but they are all smiling now.

Simon Massart, Belgium [Follow: Twitter]
Having a collection of great players individually does not guarantee anything. France and Belgium both have those resources but the former clearly managed get the most of them in a collective fashion. When the goalkeepers are having a good day, the defence is organised and the rest of the players are very focused, the difference is often just a few small moments. Samuel Umtiti was that difference today. The Red Devils did not manage to find any holes in the French defensive wall when they needed to most.

Budweiser Man of the Match
The difference up front and rock solid at the back, Samuel Umtiti played the pivotal role in sending France into the Final.

The stat
11 – No coach has ever taken charge of more France games at the World Cup than Didier Deschamps. Having moved beyond Raymond Domenech and Michel Hidalgo today, he will extend that record even further on Sunday.

What’s next
France v England/Croatia, Final, 15 July, Moscow
Belgium v England/Croatia, Match for Third Place, 14 July, Saint Petersburg

  • Cristiano Ronaldo makes move to Juventus
  • Brings to an end a nine-year spell at Real Madrid
  • The Best FIFA Men’s Player agrees four-year contract

Italian giants Juventus have signed Cristiano Ronaldo, with the former Real Madrid star heading for his first spell in Italy, after nine years starring in Spain’s La Liga.

Having requested a transfer, the reigning The Best FIFA Men’s Player, fresh from reaching the Round of 16 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ with Portugal, signed a four-year deal with the Turin side, who have won the Italian Serie A title for a record seven successive seasons.

“I believe that the time has come to begin a new stage in my life and that is why I have asked the club to accept my transfer request. I feel that way and I ask everyone, and especially our followers, to please understand,” Ronaldo said in an open letter.

“Real Madrid has conquered my heart, and that of my family, and that is why more than ever I want to say thank you. I’m leaving but this shirt, this crest and the Santiago Bernabeu will continue to always feel as my own wherever I am.”

Ronaldo ends a glorious trophy-laden spell in the Spanish capital, having picked up 16 titles including no less than three FIFA Club World Cups, four UEFA Champions Leagues – including the last three – and two league titles. He was also named as the world’s best men’s player on six occasions while representing Los Blancos.

Additionally, the 33-year-old racked up an incredible scoring record with Real, setting in stone a tally of 451 goals in 438 games.

“Real Madrid would like to express its gratitude to a player who has proved to be the best in the world and who has marked one of the brightest times in the history of our club and world football,” the Spanish club said in an official statement.

“Beyond the conquered titles, the trophies achieved and the triumphs achieved in the playing fields during these nine years, Cristiano Ronaldo has been an example of dedication, work, responsibility, talent and improvement. For Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo will always be one of its great symbols and a unique reference for future generations.”

The aim of this multi-platform activation is for music and football enthusiasts from all over the world to propose songs to be played in the stadium during the final matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.

The amount of feedback from fans who loved to take on the role of “Stadium DJ” has been beyond impressive on all FIFA’s social platforms, but Twitter definitely tops the charts.

But that is not all, the FIFA post also has the third highest vote total among polls posted on Twitter, is the seventh most retweeted Tweet of 2018 and is the most retweeted, liked, and replied-to Tweet about the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.

The results of the #FIFAStadiumDJ voting on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Weibo and VK were announced yesterday and the selected songs are added to the FIFA Stadium Playlist on Spotify.

“We’re looking at proposing meaningful initiatives to fans around the World,” said Jean-François Pathy, FIFA Director Marketing Services. “Football and music are part of our everyday life and, as such, offer a perfect combination to create an engaging narrative. It is definitely the kind of activation we want to repeat in the future. FIFA can rely on a strong digital and multi-platform offering to put fans at the heart of the game. This successful campaign with Twitter and FIFA World Cup Sponsor Vivo is only the beginning,” he added.

“Twitter is the place people come to talk about what’s happening in sports and entertainment – we’re thrilled that passionate fans have registered the third most votes in the history of polls on Twitter for the #FIFAStadiumDJ competition and engaged with this Tweet more than any other about the tournament,” said Jay Bavishi, Senior Partner Manager for FIFA at Twitter. “We’re excited to see football fans and music fans embrace the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia all in one place on Twitter.”
