Worldwide known fashion company Louis Vuitton has announced three unique projects to celebrate the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.

The company was commissioned once again to make a special case that will hold the Official FIFA World Cup Trophy, while it has added two new and exciting projects in anticipation of the world finals in Russia: an official adidas match ball collection trunk and an official licensed product collection.

Since 2010, Louis Vuitton was commissioned by FIFA to provide a bespoke case to ensure the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy travelled in safety and in style. This tradition will continue for Russia 2018. Handmade in Asnieres, France, the case will be revealed on the pitch in Moscow at the Opening Match on 14 June, and at the Final on 15 July.

Louis Vuitton has teamed up with adidas and FIFA to create an exclusive and truly unique match ball trunk. With only 21 available for purchase worldwide, the trunk will hold 13 re-editions of the Official Match balls used at the World Cup since 1970 and one Louis Vuitton specially-designed football.

In addition to the trunk will be the Louis Vuitton 2018 FIFA World Cup™ Official Licensed Product Collection. The collection offers a refined yet playful football-inspired style, including exclusive versions of Keepall and Apollo bags along with a selection of smaller leather pieces. A logo unique to Russia 2018 has also been created for the design with the initials ‘L.V’ used like a team’s crest.

Continuing the company’s long tradition of personalisation, a customisation tool will give fans the chance to create original and unique flag-inspired coloured versions of the collection’s Keepall bags during Russia 2018.

Dates for your diary
– On 30 May 2018, Louis Vuitton will open a temporary pop-up store in Moscow at the Crocus City Mall, the biggest luxury mall in Russia. The pop-up store will be open from 30 May to 31 July

– The Louis Vuitton 2018 FIFA World Cup™ Official Licensed Product Collection will be available in 50 Louis Vuitton stores around the globe and online from 14 June until end of July 2018

Varaveerakul: Women’s football has a bright future in Thailand – FIFA on GBP Sports

  • Thailand recently qualified for second successive Women’s World Cup
  • Strides being made but off-field challenges still loom
  • Team’s general manager has been learning from FIFA’s Women’s Football department

Last month, Thailand sealed their place at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup France™ with their best performance at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in over three decades. It was a remarkable achievement for the south-east Asian nation, who qualified for the global finals for a second successive edition.

Among those basking in the glow of this tremendous achievement is Rumpha Ploy Varaveerakul, the Thais’ general manager. “One of our goals was to qualify for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019, which we duly achieved,” Varaveerakul told FIFA.com. “All the players performed very well throughout and the team lived up to the expectations.”

“They were particularly impressive against Australia,” she continued, citing a semi-final clash against the former Asian champions in which Thailand held their own throughout 120 minutes before losing on penalties. “We are now putting all of our efforts in preparing for the forthcoming Women’s World Cup. We hope to continue our good run and even improve our performances on the world stage.”

One of Asia’s pioneers in the women’s game, Thailand stormed to the final of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup four times in the tournament’s early years, winning the title in 1983. But their long anticipated breakthrough at World Cup level didn’t come until four years ago, when they qualified Canada 2015. Returning to the global stage in France 2019 is, says Varaveerakul, testament to the game’s development in Thailand.

“There are women playing football everywhere in my country,” she said. “There is little resistance in Thailand against women playing football. Our FA has noticed the increasing women’s football population and we will continue to develop the game by arranging more regional competitions through cooperation with local FAs, regional governments and sports schools.”

As in many other countries, though, the women’s game in Thailand does difficulties in attracting funding. Improving that situation forms part of Varaveerakul’s job description. “I’ve been working in Thai FA for two years and I have seen how our teams struggle,” she said. “We are working hard to gain more support for the women’s game.

“The challenge is to attract sponsors. The women’s game is not yet as popular as the men’s game and most women players are not very famous. But we are working closely with our marketing colleagues to get sponsorship for our women’s league, which was launched last year. This year would see the launch of another league-the U-18 women’s league. Things will get better.”

FIFA apprenticeship
The Football Association of Thailand are also aware that internal improvements are required to further develop the women’s game. With that in mind, Varaveerakul was sent to Zurich in March of this year, when she spent two weeks working with FIFA’s Women’s Football Department. That short internship proved invaluable in raising her work to new levels.

“My aims were to learn how FIFA is organising women’s football events as well as FIFA’s goals when it comes to women’s football development. Both are key in terms of our future development. All the people (in FIFA) were friendly and helpful to me and everyone was open and pleased to answer my questions. In addition, they have told me to stay in contact and let them know whenever we have questions.”

It proved a fruitful apprenticeship. And with a Women’s World Cup now to plan for, Varaveerakul is confident the knowhow she has gathered will make a positive impact on her work. “This opportunity was very useful for me to learn ideas and knowledge, which will help with our long-term plans. The experiences will definitely help make our women’s football go in the right direction. I am clear that our women’s game will enjoy a bright future.”

Thailand’s results at the 2018 AFC Asian Cup:
Group stage: China 4-0 Thailand; Thailand 6-1 Jordan; Thailand 3-1 Philippines
Semi-final: Australia 2–2 (a.e.t.) 3-1 PSO Thailand
Third-place playoff: China PR 3-1 Thailand

Quiet month sees Kuwaitis soar – FIFA on GBP Sports

Just seven international ‘A’ matches, all friendlies, took place in the past month and as a result there are few movers in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.

Most of the top 50 is unchanged, with Germany, Brazil and Belgium respectively sitting at the summit of the same top ten as last month.

In fact, the first 47 positions remain totally unchanged from April’s ranking, but outside the top 50, a couple of nations have made notable advances. Kuwait (160, up 16) leap up the table thanks in part to their 2-0 friendly victory over Palestine. Just three more sides – Grenada (163, plus eight), Benin (84, up six) and Botswana (142, up six) – moved up more than five ranking spots in the past month.

The Philippines (111, up 2) attained their best ever position in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, due to the Azkals’ positive results in recent months – which included qualifying for their maiden AFC Asian Cup.

The next FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be published on 7 June 2018.

  • Moreno set for his third World Cup finals appearance
  • Defender has amassed 91 caps with El Tri
  • One of three team captains, along with Rafa Marquez and Andres Guardado

The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ could not be coming at a better time for Hector Moreno, who turned 30 this year. As standard bearer of a generation of players who have been together for many years, the Real Sociedad centre-back goes into the tournament at the peak of his powers and is dreaming of glory with his long-standing colleagues.

The task awaiting them is a challenging one, as he knows only too well. Drawn into a tough group with Germany, Sweden, and Korea Republic, El Tri will need to be on top of their game, if they are to go far at Russia 2018. Moreno is aware of that and much more as well.

In an exclusive interview with FIFA.com, he explains how Mexico need to respond to the four most important factors in football to ensure that their Russian adventure has a happy beginning, middle, and end.

Ambition

“Let’s be totally honest about this: my number one ambition is to be a world champion. Ask any player that question and they’ll give you the same answer, and I know my team-mates have got their minds set on that too. We’re going to Russia to win.

“Obviously, we’re aware that there are a lot of factors that dictate whether you achieve that goal or not, like luck, referees, and the opposition. Success, to my mind, would be to come home secure in the knowledge that the people closest to me are proud of me. I don’t know what the final result’s going to be, but I’ll be happy, as long as I know that I’ve given my all for my country.”

Preparation

“Since Juan Carlos Osorio took over, we’ve prepared like never before and I’ve learned and improved a lot. Not only does he tell us what to do, but he’s also given us the tools to go out and make the best decisions. He’s doing everything he can to make us improve.

“When you go out to play now, you have a very clear plan in your head. Sometimes, it works out, but there are other times when the opposition comes into things, and we’ve lost a couple of warm-up matches along the way. That’s all part and parcel of the learning process, though, both for him and for us. You just have to turn the page and move on.

“And in that respect, we’ve also had the best possible back-up in this World Cup cycle. We’ve got a new physio and a mental coach. They’re little things, different things, and though they’re no guarantee that we’re going to become world champions, they’re definitely going to take us closer to that goal.”

The fans

“Mexican fans are very passionate and the country really cares about the national team. We know that and we understand it. The people who are around me and speak to me are generally positive and wish us the best. In the street and on social media, they almost always show me their support and wish us the best of luck for the World Cup.

“Obviously, there are always going to be people who don’t agree with things, but you take that as it comes and just let it go. You accept criticism when it comes, but in general, people want things to go really well for us.

“We also want to make them very happy because of other things that don’t have much to do with football, for everything we have to deal with in Mexico. It’s just a small, but important way, in which we can help our fans and families.”

Togetherness

“I’ve known most of my team-mates since we were very young and that’s really, really important. The core of the 2014 squad is still there, but we’ve got four years’ more experience now and we’ve all grown on a personal and professional level. We’ve all really kicked on and you can see that.

“I’ve got a family now and I’m settled in my everyday life, which helps me concentrate on my work and I approach it in the best possible way. That’s the case with most of us. Fortunately, we have balanced, settled personal lives.

“We’ve been through every possible experience in these last few years, and it’s all helped us grow, mature, learn, and come together much more as a group. We’re more united than ever and we’ve got a great group of players. There’s no question that’s going to be absolutely vital in Russia.”
